"Upscale" Sushi

The area you want, consider Zen or Aoyama.

Five Guys coming to Oshawa

And they have a location opening up in Ajax now too, 140 Kingston Road East in the Durham Centre... across the parking lot from Costco, between the Black's Camera and the George Richards. Sign is up, no other signage as to opening date.

Looks like South St. Burger across the street is about to get snuffed out.... nice!

Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!

Let me put it this way. If your opinion on her was right Kates would not have been hired by the G&M in the first place, let alone keep her job with them for 38 years. In addition, if her opinion of Sado Sushi was wrong they'd still be in business.

ISO HOME made Shrimp Chips

Nice to be proven right. I said snack aisle high shelf at T&T didn't I?

Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!

"In my opinion Joanne Kates can't write, can't think for herself and to say that all her taste is in her mouth is to compliment..........."

...and yet she lasted at the Globe and Mail for 38 years? If she wrote for NOW or the Toronto Sun then you might have a point.

Joanne Kates is leaving the Globe!

So you're saying that every one of her Top 100 are avoids? Take a look...

Joanne Kates retires

I meant retired from real print media. Anybody can do a blog.

Where To Buy Granulated Brown Sugar in Toronto

Doesn't Bulk Barn carry this?

She has to be commended for having the guts to rip popular spots when justified. Remember how certain people on this board got their knickers in a twist when she demolished Sado Sushi? That was a thing of beauty! Even if she was fired, she lasted almost 40 years there; how many people keep the same job that long these days? She must have been doing something right all that time, despite what certain people like to say about her, or she'd have been gone a long time ago.

Joanne Kates retires

Anybody think James Chatto comes out of "retirement"?

ISO HOME made Shrimp Chips

T&T as above, as well as T-Phat out here in Durham Region... ask for "shrimp crackers" or "prawn crackers" in the snack aisle. In both stores I usually see them on high (not eye-level) shelves if not the top shelf. Never understood this, but now you know where to look.

ISO HOME made Shrimp Chips

You'll find them in any Asian supermarket.

Scarborough Gems

I disagree on Belfiero. Gave them 2 chances to win my business (they were lucky I even came back a second time after how bad the first visit was), never again:

Burger's Priest vs. Holy Chuck vs. Stockyards

Bravo! I disagree with the idea of asking them to use your ingredient, but once you've been served the food, what you do with it is your business. You didn't even have to hide it, just don't expect them to put it on the burger for you.

Next logical step: go to Terroni with some extra cheese (and Microplane grater) for your seafood pasta and a can of Coke Zero!

made-from-scratch lemonade or iced tea- 2012

I hear you. My wife is American and it bothers her to not be able to get real iced tea in restaurants here. We definitely make iced tea at home and drink it all the time.

If she must have it at a restaurant other than RC, she orders hot tea and two pint glasses filled to the top with ice. So that's a workaround you could try in future.

Enjoy your trip!

80th birthday celebration at Chinese restaurant in Toronto

OK, I know this is water under the bridge, but why was Toh always praised and Wah always panned? I never understood this given they were run by the same people. And if Wah was less popular why would they close Toh?

It seems almost as silly as saying "I love Loblaws but I hate Superstore"!

made-from-scratch lemonade or iced tea- 2012

Ruth's Chis Steak House definitely brews real iced tea. You have to request it (and they'll make it to order) since unlike in the U.S., up here "iced tea" is assumed to be Nestea style.

NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA

I never had an issue with the heat (if your comment was referring to me), just their overall recipe isn't to my liking.

It doesn't take a genius to make a super-hot wing though, you must admit.

Japanese Izakaya Nejibee

Finally have their own website, not much on it yet:

I agree with your statement about it being owned and operated by Japanese. Sayonara to Akasaka and the rest of the Chinese Teppanyaki places...

Shakey's Bloor West

Darn, I thought you were announcing that the California-based pizza chain of the same name had expanded here....

Missing the UofT food truck

That guy's still there? The one who parks right over the storm sewer so he can dump his used oil directly to Lake Ontario? Geez, he was there when I was in school, and I graduated in 1997!

I used to get my lunch at the Greek food truck parked in front of him (he still there too?), I would get the souvlaki or a cheeseburger with fries.

Maybe I need to come back next month for spring reunion!

NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA

Exactly. Duffs did not "perfect" the wing, they wrecked it by omitting the butter. Their sauces are just straight hot sauce. To me the butter is a key component, cuts down the bite of the vinegar and helps it adhere to the wings. Anchor Bar style still rules for me.

NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA

They're OK only if not sauced. Sauced breaded wings are disgusting. But any breading means they are no longer Buffalo wings.

NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA

I didn't misread anything. I was stating that (in my opinion) breaded sauced wings are a fail, and that breaded wings are not Buffalo wings (fact, not opinion). Meaning, his recommendation is a no-go for me. if anybody misread, it was you.

NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA

Breading + sauce = epic fail. Unless you like wings coated with a disgusting mushy paste which is what happens when the breading absorbs the sauce, which will happen in short order.

There's a reason why proper Buffalo wings are UNBREADED.

Where oh where to get canned or packaged poutine sauce (e.g. St. Hubert) in east end Toronto

I'm almost certain I've seen it at Dollarama and Metro (not surprising since those are Quebec based chains).

PC Products to go Artificial Flavour and Colour Free

You can start with this thread. Lots in there.

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/806921#6817567

Read further down where the overpriced Black Label line is exposed as a total bait-and-switch... same product, different package, higher price. Especially where a Loblaws fanboi midway through the thread suddenly switches to hater because of this. That was a thing of beauty.

Westonette must take his cues from RIM on how to (not) retain market share...
