Where to purchase coconut oil that has no flavor
but be careful of the brand, because some are hyrdogenated.
Where to purchase coconut oil that has no flavor
use it just like olive oil or butter. i saute greens in it, shrimp, chicken, fish, etc. i have used it in brownies with added coconut that came out amazing.
it's a very healthy oil.
it can also be used topically and has antibacterial qualities.
Chew and Screw from Dry Dock Cafe
i always understood "chew and screw" to mean eat and leave without paying. i hope at least the op adjusted what was likely an auto-grat.
I know, this is ridiculous but regarding raw shrimps...
don't cry! i LOVE langoustines and wish i had better access to those!
Pls help me choose 1 stop for Cambodian in Lowell!?!
i'll add viet thai to this list.
we were thoroughly unimpressed with tepthida khmer, and went on rec's via this board. the table linens did not make up for the horrible service, deathly slow food service, horrendous noise level in a place not even half-full and food not 1/2 as good as places mentioned above. add that it's also more expensive and we will just spend our money elsewhere.
Rum suggestions for baking only
i'm not a rum drinker, but bake with captain morgan's or meyer's. reasonably priced and taste just fine in stuff like banana breads.
generic label rums are truly terrible.
I know, this is ridiculous but regarding raw shrimps...
it's not a favor since you will be paying them money.
don't waste money buying pre-cooked shrimp. they are usually terrible, even for shrimp cocktail, and cannot be subbed for raw successfully. truly a waste of time and money.. buy in bulk whenever you get near that city, or find another substitute. can you buy langoustines?
Can you Mail Oreo Truffles?
most baked items with cream cheese also contain eggs. that's more the danger as far as food safety goes.
unless you're overnighting them someplace, it could be several days in transit. it's 90 degrees in my neck of the woods today and even hotter in the back of a freight truck. oreo trufles would be a melted mess.
pack them with lots of ice packs and express ship, or i wouldn't bother.
Phien's Kitchen Changeover
pho is new on the menu, but thanks for the msg warning. now i'll skip it instead.
it is in a weird little spot and always did more take-out than in-house dining.
don't know if the sausage are the same, but they were always very good. our favorites were the tongue and the laab. are they still offered?
Best/cheapest mail order dry aged steaks
no need to YELL. i am perfectly aware of texas a&m and its repute.
Those weird things you eat when you are in your kitchen
i dip almonds in soft butter as a snack.
ginger creme brûlée keeps breaking - help!
what's the recipe?
you definitely don't need to vent it during cooking. bake uncovered, but that wouldn't have broken the custard.
Best brand of "slice and bake" cookies?
brownies and blondies whip up in 5 minutes and can be cut in small cookie-sized pieces.
those pillsbury tube cookies just taste like chemicals and sweetener. they also contain hydrogenated oils.
Leftover Lobster
poach some asparagus. cut in small pieces and toss with the lobster meat. toss with some lemon juice, salt, pepper. put a dollop of wasabi mayo on top. i don't approve of gussying up lobster very much. :)
also, we never have left-over, lol.
Fourteen ounces is the new pound
recently bought some bumblebee canned wild salmon. it was a 6 oz. can, but sounded very sloshy. i squished out all the liquid when i got home and weighed the fish. less than 3 oz.!
Best/cheapest mail order dry aged steaks
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Factsheets/Inspection_&_Grading/index.asp
strange that the usda does not offer this info, since they do the grading.
after 3 pages of google results, i only found your info on one site from one university. no place else.
Best/cheapest mail order dry aged steaks
i have worked in a couple of high-end steakhouses and have NEVER run across low, middle or top prime. prime is prime and it is less than 2% of the beef produced in the u.s., which is why it is so rare retail. it almost all goes to restaurants.
Best/cheapest mail order dry aged steaks
it seems like if the on-line guys are charging such high prices, you can easily go to smith & wollensky or capital grille in midtown. both sell dry-aged steaks and will sell you raw product. it's all from allen brothers, all dry-aged at least 3-4 weeks. just call ahead and bring a cooler. (s&w butchers and ages its own meats, i believe capital ages its own, but buys it cut.)
they will likely charge you menu prices, but that still seems cheaper than what you've found.
Condiments That Do and Do Not Need Refrigeration
keeping delicate oils in the fridge is fine if you don't use them frequently.
neither maple syrup nor mustard require refrigeration. but if it makes you feel better, go right ahead. :)
5/15/12 Rosa Mexicano Report
yeah, it's pretty much on every sushi menu.
i've walked by rm and really am shocked by how ugly it is, lol. the designer really should have his or her eyes taken out for that project. does it resemble the others?
jonathan waxman has signed on as their corporate chef, which i found pretty impressive, unless it's a stunt-move just for dough, like jasper did with legal's.
oc, thanks for the review and am glad you enjoyed it. i just can't get amped up about $25 tacos.
oh, and anybody thinking about heading down there this weekend, there will be graduations at the pavillion, fri, sat and sun so there will be zero street parking available. just fyi.
Appetizers for a Memorial Day BBQ for a crowd
shrimp cocktail. you can buy the shrimp pre-cooked or steam them a few days ahead. just toss over ice with some sauce on the side.
May 2012 Openings and Closings
as of today they are officially open and taking reservations.

i too loved the original chef. i still dream of the pig butter and the ethereal bolognese.
artisan and sip. a place that will serve stuffed shells and sushi. yuk, ok?
Best/cheapest mail order dry aged steaks
allen brothers looks to be gouging. yowza. although they are the main suppliers for steakhouse chains like morton's and smith & wollensky.
bryan's is charging about what you'd pay in a steakhouse, so hardly a bargain there either.
i've heard costco sells prime beef. do you have access to one?
calling all bakers - phyllo milk pie?!
it doesn't "wind up on top." it's pre-baked before the custard is added.
this seems like a good recipe for those who are phyllo-phobic.
whenever i work with it, i spray it with pam, instead of brushing with butter. makes for a much less heavy finished product.
personally, i wouldn't like raisins in a custard, but otherwise this sounds good!
