Remington's, Pascal & Sabine...

Arright, here we go...

Remington's (Manasquan) Dinner for two Thursday night. Anniversary. Requested table away from kitchen/stations, preferably by the window and that's what we got. Nice. Arrived a few minutes early for 6:30 res and asked if there was time to sit at the bar for a drink first. As it wasn't busy yet, the hostess graciously held the table for a bit. Her: a California Chardonnay (Chateau St. Jean). Me: Hendrick's Gibson (well made).

At the table, our server recited a special soup (a bisque?) and a special salad (tomato/mozz caprese style). No entree specials as "the menu is going to change in a week or two."

Nicely warmed rustic bread arrived after we ordered, but I could tell it was a day old. I know the weather was warm and humid, but the butter was almost too soft to spread.

Appetizer
Shared "Overnight Brisket Steam Buns, with Granny Smith Kim-Chee, Pineapple Hoisin, Chives." The meat wasn't as unctuous as I expected and the kim-chee, while flavorful, lacked the heat I wanted. Overall, decent.

Entrees (with more Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir for me)
Her - Potato-crusted Halibut with quinoa, asparagus and some kind of tomato-based sauce. Cooked well, nicely crusted, tasted good, but not an overly memorable plate.

Me: Brined/Grilled Pork Chop, Pickled Cabbage/Cherries and Cheese Grits “Lava Cake.” Pork chop was fine, slightly smoky from the grill, perfectly cooked though a little salty (over-brined?). Cabbage and cherries were nice complement and help cut the richness. The "Lava Cake," however, was an example of a great idea with poor execution. Looked perfect but the grits were dry, the outside rubbery and while the cheese sauce inside was definitely lava-like, it lacked tangy, cheese flavor. And the grits were dry.

Dessert
Shared vanilla creme brulee with lemon-thyme-almond shortbread cookies. Tasted fine, cookies were good, but the creme brulee was inconsistent, warm in spots from the bruleed sugar but anywhere from ice cold to just right, and the texture wasn't creamy enough for me. A little stiff.

Overall, we’ll go back with lowered expectations. The bill wasn't a killer and the place was busy. I think I'd prefer the bar scene/menu more (same thought I had after our last visit a few years ago).

Pet peeve: It's a nice place with a pseudo-fine dining air, but they have virtually no dress code (basically, no tank tops for men, no bikini tops for women), and while I spend most of my life in shorts and t-shirts, management should either polish up the dress code or simply strip down the atmosphere to accommodate a more casual crowd.

I was there last night and asked where the chef had worked before (I was pretty sure I knew) and the server mentioned Trinity in Keyport right away, which would the correct answer if indeed Chef D'Ennery is still there. Of course, I have no confirmation either way related to what you heard.(review coming soon)

Remington's, Pascal & Sabine...

It's Remington's, mostly because of decent past experiences as well as the new chef. I, of course, have a date.

Thanks. We did like Piccolo very much, a little less impressed by Raven though we didn't try steakhouse menu. Molly? Have to think about that. I have not heard good things about the new Mr. C's but have not been there since the relaunch.

Looking for fresh ideas on much-discussed "special" restaurant's in Monmouth County, especially the southern half. We've been to many of them with varying opinions. Very familiar with Nicholas and the opinions of it, so that aside... Thanks in advance.

Birthday dinner with "wow factor" within 30 minutes of Long Branch?

Red Bank is great, but other than Nicholas across the bridge in Middletown, where's the wow factor? (trolling, I know)...

Updates from the Shore - Summer 2015

Went yesterday. Nick is great. Was expecting a larger selection of cut meat, but quality was there. Nice bone-in rib eye (though I like them thicker). Went on the grill with the slightest seasoning. Also picked up two pork chops for today. He gave us a sample of his steak rub, which seems like a montreal-type seasoning. I did not use it on the steak, though. I'm sure we'll go back. Thanks for the advice.

Best bourbon selection in MonOc?

Thanks all for the info. The post really took on a life of its own (social media at work). What's interesting is that since nearly all of the replies involved stores, I guess great bourbon selections in the area are hard to find. My few discoveries include Remington's, Fromagerie, St. Stephens (for Irish) and even Harpoon Willy's for a Blanton's neat. Carry on.

Best bourbon selection in MonOc?

I'll take store recommendations though I know quite a few. I'm more interested in restaurant/bars with outstanding bourbon and whiskey choices, beyond the usual Maker's Mark/Woodford Reserve/Jim Beam Black Label.Thank you in advance!

Favorite Defunct Monmouth County Restaurant

I was going right in for Tortuga... can't believe I got beat! Good call, also on the Main Street location of Rajun' Cajun.

Also have to mention The Farm House in Little Silver, Eurasian Eatery in Red Bank and Chef Ed's in Belmar, along with many others already on the page.

Whoa. Didn't see that coming. Hard to believe, but you sound like you might have inside info. Makes it all even worse... and makes me ill (if true).

Danny's Steakhouse/Sushi/Wine Bar...Red Bank, on Kitchen Stakeout 4/24/13

Saw the show and, frankly, I think this one was really over-doing the reasons for the restaurant's apparent demise. One foul-mouthed bartender, another lifting some cash from the bar, two lousy servers....? They never presented any palpable problems with Danny's, especially with the food. I can't say if the food is good or not, haven't been for anything more than a drink in five years. But the saddest thing was that it *seemed* that the business had passed Danny by with no one there to hold things up.
