Simple, Impressive, Quick Desserts

Oh good. The link I put in was bad apparently, if you can't find it I found it doing a search for NY Time plum torte

School lunch help!

Thanks. She's not very picky but she's never eaten without an adult around her so I have no idea how she'll be in a lunch table environment. The school isn't terribly kosher, i can do meat just then there can't be any dairy in her lunch; I'm just not a remotely kosher person so I get overwhelmed. I like the chili idea though, I was also thinking spinach pasta and spinach risotto- maybe the green will look cool to her.

School lunch help!

Oh I need help too, kosher and nut free and a three year old to boot. My thoughts are hummus sandwiches with shredded carrots, hard boiled eggs and greek yogurt with honey and sunflower seeds (I think they're ok, I'll check first of course). I'd love suggestions!!

Simple, Impressive, Quick Desserts

I was served this plum cake this past weekend, apparently it's very well known (a NYTimes staple). It was so easy, pretty and uses summer fruit. My friend used larger plums and had three rows of three halves.

can bean stew sit out all day?

I am making a white bean stew, it's simmering now but I need to get to work, can it sit covered in its pot (off heat) until I get home tonight (in about 6 hours)? There's no chicken stock in it, just beans, tomatoes, carrots and onions.

Thanks!

beer of the month

Thanks guys, I didn't even think of the state issue, I thought the supreme court took care of all that.

beer of the month

I was looking for a good beer of the month club for some gifts, I have never heard of any of them so I was wondering someone could give me a suggestion of which one to use. I want a three month "subscription" because I have a budget of $100 per gift.

Thanks so much!

Fresh Direct Updates?

we used to get at least one unordered item in every order. This happened about 5-6 times in a row. Nothing as good as jam though. When they do get things wrong that are not in our favor, they are always good about issuing credits (if you call, the one time I emailed I never heard back).

Thai Basil - what to do

I have a little bit that I cut from my mother's herb garden. I have never used it before, so I don't know what flavor it imparts onto food, is it like lemon basil? I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions. Thanks!

Apples vs. pears - urgent help needed

So I am making Rosh Hashanah dinner tonight and I realized last night that my apple crostada (Ina's recipe) only serves 6 (I have 11 people coming). So I decided to make 2, but I want to use pears (because why make two of the very same thing?) for the other one.

So my questions are - do I have to do anything different in the filling to deal with the wateryness (not really a word) of the pears? And then my other question is bosc or bartlett? I bought both at the store so I can use either.

Just so I can share, this is my menu:

Honey glazed chicken
Spinach with pine nuts and raisins
Israeli Cous Cous (apparently not really Israeli)
Vegetable bake
cookies (pistachio shortbread and cinnamon chocolate)
Baked fruit (another Ina recipe) with crème fraiche and honey
Apple/pear crostada

I'm making the crostadas in a few hours - please help me!!

Good yellow cake?

This is the Carole Walter's cake we were discussing above.

Desserts with honey

That sounds really good, I'll have to look it up.

Desserts with honey

I'm cooking Rosh Hashana dinner for 10, I try to be a little creative in my take on the traditional. I'm not a big fan of honey cake (although I've been told to try one again) but would like my dessert to have honey in it. We're not kosher so dairy/meat etc. doesn't matter. Any creative ideas? Thanks, much appreciated.

UWS dinner for 90th birthday

I was going to say Compass as well.

Sage

I was thinking of putting some under chicken skin, but now the pork chop sounds divine

Thanks all!

Sage

This looks really good, and I think I would add sausage. This may be tomorrow night's meal.

Sage

So my husband begged me to cut some sage from the herb garden at my in-laws place yesterday. Now I can't think of what to do with it -- I think my mind is muddied by post summer depression. It's just the two of us and I'm not all that into sage butter sauces. I wouldn't mind something relatively simple - any ideas?

Thanks!

finger-food desserts

What a fun thread - why doesn't anyone every invite me to these kind of parties?

Here's another idea but with the caveat that I have never made it but have wanted to: it's an carrot cakey-cookie with cream cheese filling, like a mini inside out carrot cake:

Your Fresh Direct picks?

yes beer is key along with cases of bottled water and pellegrino and pellegrino sodas. I like to do my basics - eggs, milk and heavy things. Other good things are their parbaked breads and I love the Sarabeth frozen buttermilk biscuits.

Your Fresh Direct picks?

I actually concur. I do buy some veggies but I've been unhappy with their zuchinni, it was not fresh but I do get broccoli and cauliflower. I've had rotted apples (organic) and yes, my experience is that their fruit is underripe and I have just not been overly impressed.

need rec. for romantic upscale dinner

I was going to say Cru as well. I love it, always good and always special (and I find it romantic)

What happened to ChickPea??!!!??

I'm really sad about this, Chickpea was one of my favorite indulgences; I didn't go there to eat something healthy! I was thinking of going today but I guess my plans have changed.

Your Fresh Direct picks?

I second this! I'm not such a huge fan of their produce or fish though.

Favorite Tea Sandwich Fillings

There's a place by me that makes an amazing tea sandwich - they use mini apricot/raisin or currant scones, a thickish slice of baked ham and some honey mustard. Also a thin slice of tenderloin with some horseradish mayo would be a nice one as well.

What to do with a large bunch of dill?

I like it in egg salad and chicken soup

Meyer Lemons

so last night I made the lemon risotto from epicurious:
http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/106451
and it was amazing, my husband basically licked the serving bowl clean. I added a little lemon basil, peas and shrimp. The peas were needed, it was the perfect offset to the lemon.

What should I do with Mangoes?

we made a yummy mago basil margarita

Pizza Delivery on the UWS

I'm partial to Pizzabolla on Amsterdam and 92nd, basically I love their whole wheat crust.

Finding Meyer Lemons ....

I'm on my way to WF in Chelsea for lunch now, so if I see them there I'll let you know.

Meyer Lemons

where did you find them?? I looked everywhere (obviously not). Thanks, risotto sounds great actually.
