Visiting Charleston, SC in September

Thanks everyone for replies - heading down this weekend. Really looking forward to it - and I'll let you know where we end up!

Most Unhealty Meal in NYC

Go to the Blue & Gold Deli on the corner of 1st Avenue and 59th St. Look at their prepared foods - get them.

Ask for a roast beef sandwich with russian dressing, swiss cheese, cole slaw. May not sound like much - but just you wait - get it on a hero.

The prepared foods are just... well... cholesterol heaven !!!! (and they deliver)

Foodie GF B-Day Coming Up

I'm going through the same thing - (just put up a post actually) - debating between Allen & Delancey and Dell'anima. Leaning toward A&D, I think.

Visiting Charleston, SC in September

Staying at the Wentworth Mansion - will not have a car. I already have my reservation at Peninsula Grill.

Would love to find some off-the-beaten path place for lunch or dinner. Someplace the locals love, but like keeping secret (I won't tell a soul!)

Thanks from New York!

Dell' anima vs. Allen & Delancey

I have reservations at both for a September Saturday night.

Romantic dinner for 2.

Which way do I go? Definitely want romantic vibe, definitely want great food.

I know Dell'anima has the food, but does it have the vibe?

Our 10th Anniversary in September: Not OIBLTIBS

I want a special dinner for our 10th wedding anniversay. I'm thinking River Cafe over in Brooklyn, or possibly Jean-Georges.

My wife was wondering about The Terrace up at Columbia - not sure about that.

We really want a quiet romantic experience, with very good food -something that is certainly worth the expense. Chanterelle?

Something off-the-beaten path would be certainly fine - we're getting away from the kids for a night, so we just want it to be special.

Looking at mid-September.

Thanks so much, Chowhounders!

50th Birthday Party for 40

Thanks! Acutally, they've booked the party at Bar Boulud - the new restaurant on the UWS. The y actually have 3 private rooms. They booked the "Caviste" room - holds up to 70 people.

I guess once they're done with the expansion, there may be even more room.

50th Birthday Party for 40

Looking for a restaurant to throw a 50th birthday party for a friend. Her husband has no clue, but wants something nice. He says he's thinking about 40-50 people coming in - many from Westchester or Long Island.

Food palates will range from beginner to (oh, let's just say) advanced intermediate. Doesn't need to be (and shouldn't be) super trendy, but no Ruby Foo's!

I suggested Cafe Boulud and The Modern. Any thoughts from Chow?

Oh - right - the party NEEDS to be Saturday, December 6. Adds to the fun, right???

Commerce - for Mother's Day?

Haven't been yet, and thinking about bringing wife & kids for Mother's Day brunch (wanted to go to Compass again, but they're all booked!), so thinking of leaving the neighborhood.

Has anyone been for brunch? Thoughts on this one?

Celeste still good?

La Vela is one of the great unheralded restaurants on the UWS. Very friendly owner and staff. Love Celeste, but on a Saturday you might be pushing it with 5 at 5:30.

Moves, Closings and New - UWS

I've been there a number of times. It's owned byt the guys who own Perfecto Pizza (I told them that having that huge neon sign was ridiculous - glad they took it down.)

Owners are very friendly - nice place to sit and have a drink at the bar. Food is a bit pricey for Greek and what they offer, but it's tasty. I was there one night recently and saw about 8 people from my building. It's no Kefi, but it's certainly a step up for the neighborhood, and considering all of the "Pan Asian" on Amsterdam, a welcome change! Give it a chance, and support something local.

Fairway Cafe - Worst Service ever?

So the family went to Fairway Cafe Sunday for lunch/brunch. It was about 12:30/1:00pm, 4 of us (including our 2 year old asleep in the stroller.)

Suprisingly, they tell us they have a table for us immediately, but say we need to wake up our daughter because the stroller would interfere with servers (I understand, but where they put us, the stroller totally wouldn't have been in the way - and if they were concerned with safety, why would they let older kids sit in 2 chairs stacked on top of each other? Didn't look too secure to me!)

On to ordering. My wife wanted a glass of orange juice. Our waiter tells us they are all out and it will take 15-20 minutes for them to make more. Now, a couple of things: 1: It's Sunday Brunch on the UWS. Is the demand for orange juice surprising?? 2: We were in FAIRWAY! Couldn't they have just run downstairs and picked up a few bottles of juice from the case? It didn't even need to be fresh-squeezed. Tropicana would have been fine! So instead she and my 7 year old order lemonade. I order a root beer. My wife orders a turkey burger with swiss and avocado, I order a burger with jack and avacado. (My daughters split some eggs.)

My root beer comes in about 2 minutes. No lemonade. He says they're making it and will be out in a minute. 5 minutes. 10 minutes. He says he just brought over the glasses and it should be ready soon! Finally the lemonade for both comes about 15 minutes after ordering (yes, she should have stuck with the OJ!)

The burgers come. No avacado. We ask the waiter - "Oh, we don't have any." Let me repeat: we were at Fairway Cafe! There are mounds of avacados one floor down!

Seriously, the waiter truly did not go out of his way at all (oh yes, took awhile to get some water for us initially) which is really why I'm complaining here.

Was the burger good? Yupp. Eggs were great - brioche that came with it was delish. Would I go back? Ummmmm.... not so fast.

Post-Wedding happy Hour

Looking for a nice spot for 20 people for a post-wedding happy hour for my best friend. Cocktails, maybe some apps.

They're in their late 30s/early 40s, so not some dive.

Private room?
Chic bar?

I was thinking someplace like APT.

This would be on a Saturday night in August. Manhattan preferred.

The New Provence

Provence brings back great memorie of days-gone-by in my 20s.

I notice that the owners of Cookshop have re-opened the restaurant. Love Cookshop. Has anyone been to Provence since it re-opened a couple of weeks ago?

thinking of heading downtown soon.

Gramercy Tavern

Okay, now that Tom "Top Chef" Coliccio (yes, I know I probably spelled his name wrong) is no longer associated with Gramercy Tavern, has anyone been?

It's been around forever and always gets top reviews.

My wife wants to go for our anniversary in September. Anyone have an opinion, or been there recently?
