Cochon

I'm also shocked to hear this. I've LOVED my four or five meals there.

non cooked dishes

Here's a great list Mark Bittman did last summer of hot-weather friendly meals that require little or no cooking:

Philly restaurant open on Mondays

Ansill? Cafe de Laos?

Yazmin - Warminster

Interesting ... I recently had the opposite experience. Overcooked shrimp, sticky sweep and glopy sauces, greasy fried apps. Ew. And I thought the atmosphere was even worse. It's in a strip mall with drop ceilings, cheesy art and banquette-hall furniture.

Fresh Tortillas in Philly?

I have gotten them at La Lupe several times. They make them to order and they are fresh, warm and delicious.

Grass-fed beef

Honestly, I think they cultivate the vagueness. I went there specifically for grass fed beef because I had heard it was available there. I kept asking, and they kept skirting the question. Finally, the staffer I spoke with told me that the cows, while organic, eat corn-based feed because they are less expensive and consumers prefer the taste.

Grass-fed beef

No, actually, Guinta's does not have grass fed beef. They do carry "all natural" organic beef, which I'm sure is a cut above say Acme beef, but this issue is really important to me and I recently had an extended conversation with a staffer there. She told me that grass fed beef is too expensive and that there's no demand for it. Everyone who thinks it's important to should request that Guinta's begin carrying it. It people were willing to pay up I think they and other others would sell it.

Philly Foodie Visiting DC

Thanks! I almost specifically asked about a farmers market but I figured March isn't the best month for that kind of thing. I will definitely check it out!

Philly Foodie Visiting DC

Hi, DC Food Lovers,

I'm spending a weekend there in March. I'll be staying around DuPont Circle. I'm visiting one of my oldest and best friends; food isn't one of the things we have in common. Last time I came to town for a visit, meals were, to put it politely, less than memorable.

I'd love to checkout newish, smallish, under the radar-ish spots with fun, younger scenes and entrees topping out at $30ish. Can you guys help me? We're adventurous eaters open to any cuisine. Fun bars/night spots suggestions also welcome.

I've already visited and liked:

Matchbox
Jaleo
Etete (Kind of just OK compared to other Ethiopian places I've known and loved)

I've visited and HATED:

Lauriol Plaza

best tortilla soup in philly?

I like versions at Molcajete Mixto and Xochitl.

Wildwood NJ vacation

Wildwood is a tough spot for Chowhounds. I go with family every year and just embrace the greasy pizza at Macks, the Boardwalk fries and lemonade, Kohr Bros. ice cream and hoagies from some deli we always visit (I can't remember the name right now ... it's not exactly worth a special trip.) Last year, I discovered Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill--it would be a great place to get away with you hubby for a real meal.

I hope this year to check out Britton's Gourmet Bakery which got a tremendous write up on SeriousEats.com. Supposedly they have a apple fritter that's excellent.

Molcajete Mixto: Give it a Shot

That's so weird. When I had it it was both salty and warm...

Molcajete Mixto: Give it a Shot

Wow, I'm surprised to here that you didn't like the crepe dessert. I loved it because it was a rich blend of sweet and savory--almost salty--that really appealed to me. I'm wondering what you didn't like about it.

Cajun Boudin

Thanks, I'll definitely check into that source.

Cajun Boudin

Does anyone know where to get some reasonably authentic Cajun (not French) Boudin in Philly? I'm on a quest to find/taste some. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Restaurant Week in Philly... So Who's going where?

SteveR

FYI: Lacroix's new chef is Matthew Levin (not Benjamin) and he is even more highly acclaimed than Jean Marie Lacroix. In fact, Craig Laban boosted Lacroix's rated from three to four bells under Levin's watch. So those who don't already know would likely be pleasantly surprised.

Margot -> Narberth; Carmine's -> Bryn Mawr

I was at Margot earlier this week and the food was really great! There will be a "duck of the day" dish--an interesting special for sure. I had duck with sausage and mashed potatoes along with a crab-stuffed mushroom. My friend has salman with lentils--both dishes were very good.
