Thanks for the heads up. Soy lecithin and soybean oil are okay for my daughter. It's soybeans, soy protein and soy flour we have to be careful with. She has only ever reacted once to soy milk. But the allergy doctor tested her and combined with her other allergies, felt that she needed to be a bit careful with soy and carry an epipen. We haven't used it in 2 years of having it. That's a shame that your soy allergy is so much worse. It makes it incredibly hard, I'm sure.

Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Lots of fresh vegetables and plain food. Think white. Buttered noodles, roast chicken, potatoes. Heavy baked goods. Whoopie pies. Chain restaurants. Definitely NOT a culinary hotspot. We also want to stay away from the standard burger joint (unless it is special) or chicken nuggets or hot dog kind of places.

Hi. My family (2 kids, 12 and 6) will be visiting Toronto soon. We love to eat good food but are on somewhat of a budget. Also, we have a soy allergy, three of us won't eat seafood, and one cannot eat very spicy food while another craves it. So it is fun planning dinner at home let alone away. Things we all agree on are pizza, Spanish chorizo, kielbasa, and dessert! We love Thai, especially Northern Thai but need assurances that there are no soy products used. It's surprising that even some Mexican (although not authentic) has soy sauce! We want to stay away from chains and prefer to try things we can't get at home. Kids' menus are NOT a requirement. My kids preferred the Food and Wine Festival (not the wine, of course) at Epcot over Magic Kingdom in Disney World.

That said, I found the following restaurants that might be interesting. I would love some input and some other suggestions. I know we will only be there for 5 days but it will be nice to have options depending on mood and location. We will be staying at Bond Place hotel and will probably do the ROM or AGO, OSC, Royal Botanical Gardens, Fort York, the Islands. THANKS!!

They make a great bbq sunday with pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw and a pickle. And I don't like coleslaw but I loved that one.

Driving from Wash DC to WIlliamsburg, VA and then back to NY

Just got back from Richmond and agree completely with Kitchen 64 (and their ice cream shop next door Sweet 95!). Comfort, Galaxy Diner (more for the kitsch) and Nacho Mamas were also favorites. AMFM's recs were right on target so I'm sure those others are great. BTW the art museum which is fab on its own is also FREE. My kids enjoyed it. Science Museum had more than other science museums we've been to. (If you belong to a science museum at home, check to see if it is a member of ASTC. If so, you can get in free at the one in Richmond as well as others nearby. Great when you have just an hour to spend and don't want to spend too much money.)

We love Sal's by Victor pizza when we are in Williamsburg. We've had a lunch at King's Arms, but aside from the decor it wasn't memorable. But then I don't have bad memories either.

Thanks for all your suggestions. We just got back from our trip. We had a wonderful time and Richmond has some great restaurants. But wow! the portion sizes are HUGE.

We went to Kitchen 64 for lunch. My husband had the club, which I think is made out of an entire loaf of bread and a pound of meat! My children shared the pepperoni pizza. I had a taste of that and it was very good. I had the grilled chicken sandwich with smoked gouda and a roasted red pepper sauce with sweet potato fries. Very good, although I would have liked more of that sauce as a dip for my fries. For dinner, we just grabbed a snack at Galaxy Diner. My son had a grilled cheese and my daughter and husband had hamburgers. My husband had a chocolate shake. I had the fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and cheese sticks appetizer. The honey mustard had dill and the marinara sauce didn't taste like the normal jarred sauce so either it was homemade or a different brand, but still good.

The next day we had lunch at The Halligan Bar and Grill. The BBQ was great. I had the combo platter (brisket, chicken and pork) with homemade mac and cheese and cornbread with chipotle butter. I even tried the mac and cheese which I hate. While I wouldn't eat it, it was definitely very, very good. My son ate that for his lunch. My daughter wasn't crazy about the vinegary sauce in the pork sandwich she split with her dad, yet she put vinegar on her fries. For dinner that night, we just got dessert at Sweet 95. I got the Stella sundae with baklava. Delicious but a bit hard to eat since the baklava was dry and the ice cream cold. My children got mint chocolate chip ice cream. I guess their ice cream is handmade by the Creamery which is a local favorite? I can see why. My husband had a hot fudge sundae which he wasn't sharing.

Our final day in Richmond we went to Comfort for lunch. My husband loved his chicken tarragon sandwich. I forget what the kids had. I had a turkey sandwich with roasted apple mustard and apples and cheese. This was executed well but was a bad choice on my part because I'm not crazy about apples but wanted to try something new. I should have gone with the special which was a cold cucumber melon soup with chilis. We were full but when the waitress asked about dessert, I asked her to just tell us what they have even thought we weren't going to get any. When she said chocolate mousse, my husband's eyes lit up. We shared it and it was gone so fast. So rich. I would love to have that mousse with some Rosa Regale. Perfect! Dinner/dessert that night was at Nacho Mama's. My husband and I split southwestern egg rolls, my daughter and son split tacos. For dessert, I had key lime pie handmade by a staff member, my daughter had the churro sundae and my husband and son split the fried ice cream. That key lime pie was very good. Tart and not your typical key lime.

Good Chow at Todd Jurich's Burger Bar in Va. Beach

This place was amazing. On a food-filled vacation, it was at the top. We stopped in on a Thursday around 1. Parking was easy. My husband and children started with a chocolate shake that was the best we ever had. (They let me have a tiny sip.) I had the heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad. Pure tomato flavor and the cheese was not too soft or too firm. Perfect. My son had a hot dog. I'm sure it was wonderful. My daughter had the kid's hamburger and fries. Very good. My husband had the American cheeseburger and loved it. I had the Hatch chili burger with American Wagyu beef. Just the right amount of spice, lots of flavor, moist and juicy on a roll that could withstand all the juiciness of the burger and the moistness of the chipotle mayo and chilis. Dessert of a key lime pie sounded so tempting, but we had to get going and had already overeaten. The waitress was friendly and after a little chat we discovered her grandparents live in the same small town we live in 7 hours away. Definitely a place to remember.

Comfort and Lulus were on my list. I've added Kitchen 64.

We all like ethnic cuisine; however, with the soy allergy of my daughter's we try to avoid Asian as a family. Mexican is great. The current favorite in our house is Spanish -- anything with Spanish chorizo, piquillo peppers and manchego cheese is sure to be a hit. Italian and German are also good. If there is a place that has sushi but maybe another nearby that has something without soy, that is a possibility too.

We are staying at the Best Western (either on Plank or Broad. one is Fredericksburg and the other is Richmond). We plan to do mostly Civil War stuff during the day but also have the Lewis Ginter Gardens and the Science Museum as possibilities.

Located right on Rt. 72 Manheim Pike and not far from Lititz, they have a store and a cafe (with wonderful coffee and tea). I am planning a vacation and have been poring over travel books, Chowhound and websites looking for good restaurants. Somewhere I came across a menu on a website that listed monkey bread under breakfast items. My kids love monkey bread and I thought this would be cool. However, it is not in the restaurant I thought it was. Any suggestions, please, on restaurants that serve this? We will be driving down I-81 across through Culpeper to Fredericksburg and then down to Richmond and Petersburg before heading to Virginia Beach area. Thanks.

Best places to eat by Tuscany Suites

Thanks everyone. We just got back. We didn't get a chance to eat at the Mexican Place in Tuscany Suites but were surprised that the coffee shop was good. I had pastries that weren't dried out and fruit that was fresh. Better than a previous visit to the Peppermill. The homemade chips at lunch were really good, too. Service, especially Miriam, was great. Kept my coffee filled.

We walked to Lawry's and the service was awful, as usual. I have been there three times and hate it. If it hadn't been convenient and so late after traveling all day, we would have gone elsewhere.

After an event, we had a late night dinner at the Venetian at Otto. Granted we were the last party seated and the waiter had only been there a week. But we ordered wine, coffee, two pizzas, and two gelatos. The service was horrible. They said, "We don't have coffee. Only espresso or you can get a cafe americano which is espresso with hot water." I said that that would be fine as long as it did not have cream. But they still brought me cream. No biggie. But then the waiter brought out my gelato and I could tell it wasn't what I ordered. When I questioned him, he repeated back my order - espresso, chocolate and pistachio gelatos- and went to check. He came back and said that what he delivered is what I ordered. Instead, he had brought two pistachio and pear gelatos, which is what someone else at our table ordered. Obviously, those two light gelatos were not chocolate nor espresso. Oh well. They were good enough.

Next day we walked to the strip and ate at China Poblano at the Cosmopolitan. Very good. Would love to try it again. Late afternoon gelato in the Venetian in St. Mark's. Actually, passion fruit and coconut sorbet. Even better than Otto. Dinner was just a quick slice of pizza from JJ Boulangerie in Paris because we were too tired and not hungry enough to eat much more.

Following day was a huge breakfast at BB King's at the Mirage. Although the coffee was horrible and we sent it back for another pot, the rest of the meal was quite good. My waffles weren't as light and crisp as I hoped but definitely were tasty. Lunch was at 'wichcraft at MGM. We split a chicken pesto sandwich and left off the red peppers because my husband doesn't like them. We both agreed it was a mistake. It needed a little something. On a previous visit, I had had the steak, eggs and mushroom sandwich and liked it a lot.

We had every intention of going to Roy's for dinner, but at the last minute got a call from friends asking us to join them and a few others at Bond for drinks and D.O.C.G. for dinner at the Cosmopolitan. We couldn't say no. It was an enjoyable evening. Service at DOCG was very good even though there were some issues down the other end of the table. Our food was wonderful. My husband's swordfish was cooked perfectly as was the lamb someone else ordered. My gnocchi was light and fluffy. The Caramel Budino was amazing. The only complaint was the music. It was loud, not equalized and a bizarre mix of styles. This seemed to run counter to the waiter's assertion that the restaurant served small plates to bring back conversation into meals.

Thanks again for the tips. It's hard when you're with a group to steer decisions so maybe next time I'll get to check out more of your suggestions.

China Poblano - The Cosmopolitan

We were there the other day for lunch and enjoyed ourselves. I had a salt air margarita that was wonderful. My husband had a passion fruit agua fresca that I would have had if it wasn't for that margarita. The salsa and chips were very good. I liked the smokiness of the chipotle, even though my preference is generally for a hotter salsa. The chicken mole tacos were wonderful compared to others I have had. I liked the When Pigs Fly but as another poster said found them to be a bit heavy. Lastly, we had the coconut tapioca ball dessert with the orange sorbet and passion fruit puree. I hate tapioca but this was delicious. Very light and the passion fruit and orange added just enough flavor to counter the creaminess of the rest of the dish. The waiter joked when he brought it out that he could bring us a knife -- so we could fight over it. I enjoyed the feel of the restaurant, but this was during a fairly quiet time at lunch. I don't know how it would be at night. I definitely would want to try more dishes (especially a soup or two) and it would be fun to go with a group that you weren't necessarily trying to have a deep conversation with.

Best places to eat by Tuscany Suites

Our hotel just got changed from a Strip hotel to the Tuscany Suites. (Don't ask.) What are the best restaurants nearby? Any cuisine, moderate (entrees in the 15-30) price range, only adults in party. Maybe one expensive but definitely not splurge restaurant.

We won't have a car that I know of but I don't mind walking. On a previous visit, I walked from Mandalay Bay to the Sahara carrying a 4 year old child. When we stay for convention by the Hilton, I usually take the monorail over to the Strip and spend the day walking.

So my other question is, how safe is it to walk from the Tuscany Suites to the Strip or is there a monorail access?

My husband loves Dats Billiards and Vietnamese food. When they moved from N. Prince to Butler Ave, I found out accidentally. Now it seems they are gone from Butler Ave and we don't know where they went.

Anniversary Dinner in Orlando in October

Going to Disney for Food and Wine. Have reservations for House of Blues, Hacienda de San Angel, Via Napoli, Boma. Plan on grazing at Epcot Food and Wine for two days.

Looking for a place, not in a theme park, for an anniversary dinner. Ideally, looking for something quiet, somewhat romantic and, the catch, not outrageously expensive, with decent food. It doesn't have to be gourmet food. We like all kinds of food between us. I don't like sushi or fish of any sort, although my husband does, so it would need to be a place that had other options. However, we both love Thai and Chinese. We also like Spanish, Italian, Mexican, Steak, etc.

We are staying at the Sheraton Vistana which I guess isn't far from Downtown Disney. We will have a vehicle and willing to drive as long as the area is safe and not too confusing.

Fun place for an 8 year olds Birthday Dinner

You don't say what you like to eat or what she is interested in.

My daughter loved Benihana. (Her grandmother took her while my husband and I went to Samba.) She also liked NASCAR Cafe.

My daughter loves Food Network so any restaurant by a Food Network chef would be great for her.

Yolie's is a Brazilian steakhouse where they keep the meet coming off the grill. It's a fun experience, if you like meat. We have eaten both there and at Samba, though it has been several years. The difference was between being in a loud casino and not.

For my daughter, the most important stop in Las Vegas is the M&M store. :)

We love Ida's Cafe for breakfast and lunch. It's on Rohrerstown Road, not far from Long's Park. They have received best breakfast awards. Small, homey place but only open until 3.

If you do go into the city, Alley Kat has great pizza, burgers and soup. It's on Prince Street. Rachel's has great sweet and savory crepes. Fractured Prune down the street from Rachel's has make your own donuts. Belvedere is also very good. As is Checkers Bistro. These are all fairly close and not too far from Harrisburg Pike. Parking is available on street but there are meters.

Iron Hill - We've always found that their soups and appetizers are a bit better than their entrees.

The gas station (Tom's) on the corner with Dillerville Road used to have Achenbach's long johns. If not enough for a breakfast, might make a tasty treat!
