What time do food courts in Flushing close?

Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan opens late.

Flushing dim sum discount?

I don't know how but at some point I learned that Jade Asian doesn't offer the 50% off on weekdays on a Friday if it's a holiday weekend. Is that still the case? Is there another good dim sum place that's 50% off on weekdays with no exceptions? Thanks!

Fresh fish in Jackson Heights?

Try Skyfoods at 79-55 Albion Ave.

Decent Chinese in lower Westchester?

Maybe a passable Sichuan, or Hunan, or Cantonese restaurant?

Filipino Food

If you want adventurous eats done well try Krystal Cafe's version of Dinuguan and Bopis. Ihawan has the best BBQ, and Fiesta Grill is a good way to try different dishes. Good luck!

Best BBQ in NYC?

My friends and I were going to go to Blue Smoke but it seems to have gone downhill. What are the other alternatives? Is Texas Ranger BBQ/Legend in Jackson Heights, Queens a contender for one of the better ones in the city?

We've been to Virgil's and RUB, and some of us have had Fette Sau's BBQ.

Thanks.

LITTLE PEPPER College Point is OPEN!!

Are you referring to the preserved pork with mushrooms dish? It's my current favorite there but I'd love to try another pork belly dish.

LITTLE PEPPER College Point is OPEN!!

I came in last night and the place was practically empty but when I left around 8pm the place was packed. I hope they keep doing brisk business. It's a nice and clean place with the same great food. Also lots of street parking to be had.

The owner told my friend that her husband got into an accident and how it'll affect the reopening of the original location. She's not sure if it's indefinitely or postpone.

My friend and I tried something new with mushrooms and cured pork. Divine!

Best of Elmhurts

Any dish recs for Lin's Taiwanese? I've always wanted to go there but I wasn't sure if they'd have anything I would like.

I second the rec for Ayada. Fresh well-flavored Thai dishes, hard to go wrong with any of them. If you like it very spicy then let them know. Love their coconut juice, it's fresh and the meat is perfectly soft.

I like La Fusta too but La Boina Roja, a Colombian steakhouse, is my favorite. They give you more steak for the money and I like having maduros as a side dish.

Interesting breakfast options in Sunnyside, Woodside, JH or Elmhurst?

What exactly do you mean by non-diner type?

For something different I usually go to La Flor. There's not that many "breakfast" places in the area unfortunately.

Flushing restaurant recommendations

Flushing is certainly the place to go for good and not-too-expensive eats. Still, what is your price range? Also cash is a must or preferred in most establishments there.

I recommend Jade Asian for dim sum. You may also want to consider Ocean Jewel- I haven't been here in years but I still see a lot of people going there for dim sum.

For Cantonese cuisine, Imperial Palace for sure, but Canton Gourmet may be had for a few $ less. For Szechuan cuisine I prefer Szechuan Gourmet, but a lot of people here prefer Little Pepper and it's also cheaper. I believe all these places have lunch specials.

Good luck!

Pho

Not exactly a season for it but...I've tried Thai Son and Pho Bac in Elmhurst/Jackson Heights, and I prefer Pho Hoai in Brooklyn. The broth at Pho Hoai seems to be tastier. Any other pho in NYC worth trying?

Freshly Made Char Siu Bau in Elmhurst or Jackson Heights?

Thanks!

Dinner at La Flor, bread?

I've only been in La Flor for dinner once before. The first time I was served bread at the beginning for free, and yesterday I wasn't. It had blueberry inside and was quite good. Do they usually serve it? TIA.

Korean Fried Chicken will rock your world!

Thanks for the review. I've tried UFC on 70th St and Roosevelt and Kyochon on 156th St. and Northern. I prefer Kyochon's wings, crispier and hotter. I've been meaning to check out Bon Chon, but a friend told me Kyochon is better.

Best Tres Leches in Queens?

Yep that's the one. I actually went to Lety's and La Flor earlier to check out their versions. Lety's wasn't selling a slice today, but the lady said they usually do. La Flor's version is much more moist than the version I had at a Uruguayan bakery.

I wonder if there's any place in Queens that does the following variations:

"Following the same recipe for the cake, but soaking it in a mixture of water, rum or brandy, and sugar, it is called pastel borracho (drunken cake). It is popular throughout Central America in this form. In the Caribbean, cream of coconut is occasionally used instead of condensed milk. As in the pastel borracho, rum is sometimes added. In addition, fruit or nuts are added in some recipes, as well as many other kinds of alcohol. Cherries are most commonly used as decoration, but other fruits or berries are sometimes used instead."

Best Tres Leches in Queens?

I qualified my post with the word best. From the Google Search I've done there seems to be variations on Tres Leches. That thread you're linking to is specifically for Mexican Tres Leches.

Best Tres Leches in Queens?

I finally got a chance to try this dessert and it has me wondering where I can get the best version of it in Queens. TIA.

Lobster Rolls in Queens

Sorry for the dark pics, that's what I get for viewing photos on a laptop. This two should look better.

Lobster Rolls in Queens

Thanks for the tip!

I dropped by today and got 3 for 10.99 before taxes. I've never had lobster rolls before, but this was a lot more meatier than I expected. The store is also a few minutes away from Trader Joe's.

Flushing Sichuan Lunch and Lunch Specials?

Did Little Pepper move yet? Does anyone know if Szechuan Gourmet have lunch specials?

TIA.

Best Cheesesteak in Queens?

I don't know about authenticity but I like Rocco's in front of Home Depot on 50-10 Northern Boulevard.

3 weeks in Sunnyside - the Queens eating adventure

Paulo and Janie made some excellent recs. My favorites on their list are Sripraphai and Cannelle Patisserie. Here are my additional recs by neighborhood.

I don't know Sunnyside's food scene that well, but my favorite is the Korean restaurant Natural Tofu. They have a small menu but they do it well. Their Soon Dobu comes with very fresh silky tofu and nicely spiced (can also be ordered not spicy).

Around 70th is Filipino cuisine. Ihawan and Renee's are my favorites. I go to Ihawan for their Chicken BBQ stick meal, and Renee's for Beef Kaldereta. You can't go wrong with Halo halo at either places for dessert. Before you leave the area checkout Phil-Am at the corner of 70th Street for some Filipino snacks.

Flushing will take more than one visit, but here are my favorite restaurants. Crab Soup Dumplings at Joe's Shanghai. Dim Sum at Jade Asian, most dishes are $2 on weekdays, or Ocean Jewel. Imperial Palace or Canton Gourmet for Cantonese. For Sichuan I vacillate between Szechuan Gourmet, Little Pepper, and Spicy and Tasty.

You should also search the boards for recs on Flushing food stalls and must eats in Astoria.

Need a birthday cake for 50 people from an Astoria bakery

I second this rec! I've read that the owner lives in Astoria so he's certainly local ;-)

I don't know how much it would cost for 50 people, but I highly recommend the chocolate mousse cake or the pineapple coconut cake for a more spring/summer season flavor.

Which Asian Noodles For Dumpling Soup?

Any particular type or brand of noodles to throw into a simple dumpling soup? I have a bag of frozen dumplings and I'd like to go beyond boiling and frying. TIA.

need help with dinner in flushing

I had dinner at Corner 28 a couple of times last year. It was good, but there are more tastier options in Flushing. For Cantonese there's Imperial Palace or Canton Gourmet- in that order. For Sichuan (spicy food) there's Little Pepper, Szechuan Gourmet, and Spicy and Tasty.

I don't know about White Bear's hours, but they do sell frozen dumplings.

Dessert spot and/or bakery in Woodside, near Sripraphai

I think Cannelle Patisserie would be your best bet, but it has two major drawbacks- it's more than a 15 minute walk and they close early. http://cannellepatisserie.com/

If ice cream is enough of a dessert you can't do too bad with Sri's coconut or lychee ice cream. They're not too creamy and quite a palate cleanser.
