what NOT to get at Lers Ros Thai
I love most everything on the menu except these:
Rad nah- plenty of gravy, but just a few noodles and as many veggies on the plate. Don't remember seeing any pork.
BBQ chicken- arrived lukewarm and with shriveled skin, the sauce tasted just like that bottled sweet chili sauce found at Ranch 99. I've had the bbq chicken off those street carts in Bangkok, and this was nothing like that.
Green papaya salad with raw crab- imagined it to have just the crab meat, but actually the salad was topped with a blue crab, shell and all, halved. Required a lot of work to get the meat out, and while a lot of people may love it, apparently raw crab isn't my thing.
Grocery Outlet January 2011
What did you think of the Sterling pinot? We bought a few bottles of the 2007 cab and were pretty disappointed.
If anyone's interested, the Pleasant Hill store has plenty of Sterling syrah and zinfindel left, $5.99-$7.99.
ISO schmaltz
Mollie Stone's has it in their freezer section.

Where to buy kaffir lime TREES?
Got mine at Sloat Garden Center. There may be a location in the east bay as well.
U-pick organic farms within SF Bay Area or reasonable driving distance?
You're welcome! I'm going tomorrow too! I also found Farmer's Daughter, which will have u-pick peaches later on this summer. They have other items too, but are closed this weekend for the holiday.
U-pick organic farms within SF Bay Area or reasonable driving distance?
Was doing a search for the same and came across this info on one of the u-pick websites. Just called and got an answering machine that stated they are organic and u-pick! $2.50 /lb.

Recommendations for Samovar tomorrow for lunch at Yerba Buena location
Was just there last weekend. I guess everyone has differing opinions, but the matcha brownie was the one thing I outright hated- it had a weird consistency. The jook was surprisingly tasty, as was the smoked salmon quiche. We also liked the scones with devonshire cream.
Pulcinella Italian? Any reports?
I believe it opened this past July, but haven't seen much information about it.
I'm considering it as the locale for a pre-marathon dinner next week and was wondering if anyone has been yet. Any positive or negative reports?
Thanks.
August 2009 Grocery Outlet
I saw it at the Redwood City location too. They also had a curry flavored: http://www.mysecretpantry.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ASC000919
Where to buy fresh sugarcane? (Not juice)
Yep, I have seen it at the Alemany Farmers market before.
Banana Island (Malaysian, Singapore, Thai), Daly City report w/ pics
Yes, there is, or at least Singaporean. Try Kopitiam in Lafayette- they are known for the chicken rice.
Are you a Cheesecake Factory lover?
I was going to say the same. There actually isn't an Olive Garden in Walnut Creek, as surprising as it may be. The closest is in Antioch.
My favorites in WC right now is Kabob House, which is reasonably priced and has great food. I'm also a fan of Sichuan Fortune House in Pleasant Hill, and Korea House (lunch specials) in Concord.
suggestions for pre-marathon carb loading
I just came on here looking for the same information!
In previous years I've held carbo-loading dinners at E'Tutto Qua and Firenze By Night, both in North Beach. I think either would work out well for you.
Pandan cake in/around SF
Thanks for the suggestion. Goldilocks is actually where we tried pandan cake and my mom thought it was way too sweet.
Guess I'll keep looking, or maybe try to make my own.
Pandan cake in/around SF
I'm looking for a Asian style pandan birthday cake, as that's my mom's absolute favorite cake.
Are there any Chinese, Vietnamese, or other SE Asian bakeries in SF or on the peninsula (or even east bay) that sell this? I know some Filipino bakeries have pandan baked goods, but usually their frosting is too sweet for my mom's tastes.
Sichuan fortune house lunch special
Thanks for this, I'd wondered how their lunch specials were.
And I've been having the same worried thoughts about the future of the restaurant, as every time I've eaten here only a few tables have been occupied. Definitely the best Chinese food in Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill/Concord and so I really hope business picks up.
My favorites are the dan dan noodles, tea smoked duck, and cumin lamb.
Food Advice: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam
Cha Ca Va Vong does pack in a crowd, but mainly tourists. Try Cha Ca Anh Vu instead.
I also highly recommend Quan An Ngon, in Hanoi for street food in a nicer setting.
Grocery Outlet May 2008
Nope, this is the second time I've bought it and it's tasted fine both times. Maybe a little more tart than regular applesauce, but definitely more than edible.
Grocery Outlet May 2008
Pleasant Hill, slim pickings this week.
Also picked up a couple bottles of Il Prosecco and Moscato, though haven't tried. Also $1.99. They had plenty of Covey Run for $2.50.
Santa Cruz organic apple raspberry sauce- $1.49
Skinny Cow vanilla and strawberry sorbet bars- pack of 6 for $2.99
Back to Nature crackers, similar to Cheez Its, $0.99
Silk organic soymilk and Silk Lite soymilk, small cartons $0.99, large for $1.99
Nature's Path Peanut Butter Granola and Optimum Rebound Cereal- $1.79
Ghiradelli Brownie Mix. Forgot to note the price, but there was plenty left.
Kuching City & Damai Beach area anyone?
I have family in Kuching so I know the area quite well. Awesome food that I'm always craving! Make sure you try to local Sarawak specialties: laksa and kolo mee. Both are noodle dishes and can be found at any hawker center in Kuching.
At Damai your options are pretty much limited to the hotel restaurants. I haven't been to the Puri yet, but the old Damai Lagoon and Holiday Inn had pretty mediocre food. If you can, try and get the shuttle driver (or taxi, or rental car) to take you to Buntal Village. Just 15 minutes away, if that, and the back of the one road town is lined with seafood restaurants. It's a typical dinner getaway spot for locals in Kuching. The most famous is Lim Hock An, the very last restaurant on the road. Recommend this, or if you want even cheaper (just as good food), the restaurant just before Lim Hock An is fine too. Steamed pomfret is great, same with bamboo snails in garlic, local fern-like veggies (bi-ling, though probably the wrong spelling), tiger prawns in oats and butter. Look at the deli case of seafood and ask for recommendations.
Oakland Kosher vs Tel Aviv Kosher Market and Cheap Matzah Hunt
Okay, I was just at the Whole Foods in Walnut Creek, and they're completely sold out of matzoh! Apparently people got word of a shortage and bought out their entire supply this afternoon. And Whole Foods won't be getting another shipment in.
Any other reports of this around the bay?
Coco Luxe Confections, SF --store coming Summer '08
Yep, I talked to her at the Chocolate Salon too. She said they were aiming for June, but it would likely be more like July.
I tried their Good Fortune bar, milk chocolate with ginger and crushed fortune cookies. Neat concept, and good tasting too.
where to find fresh sugar cane juice in SF?
Baguette Express on Larkin has fresh sugarcane juice.
Boston CH seeks SF advice: Add to: Aziza, For.Cinema, B44....
Lolo- Turkish/Mexican fusion. Fun decor, really great food, and the owners are very personable.
breakfast near Walnut Creek
Crepevine has been closed for months now. There's a restaurant called Terra Mar in it's place, but haven't heard much about it.
I love Plaza Cafe on Contra Costa Blvd (in the Safeway shopping center) in Pleasant Hill. I've only been on weekends, but they have eggs benedict, buckwheat pancakes, etc.
Is it really that hopeless? - Korean in the Mission District
Why is Mango Medley listed in there? It's a Hong Kong style cafe. The only Korean item on the menu is the chive pancakes.
Old Town Singapore Cafe Update

> cucumber sauce, which I think is a minus.
This is exactly how it's served in Malaysia.
Old Town Singapore Cafe Update
I loved their Hokkien mee, beef rendang, and butter prawns. Liked their chicken rice too, but I think Kopitiam in Lafayette does a better job with this dish.
September 2007 - Grocery Outlet
Plenty of sausages left in the Pleasant Hill store as well, and I ended up buying the chicken with sundried tomato. I also picked up some Challenge butter, organic soymilk for 99 cents, and Nonni's biscotti for $1.59 (exp. December '08) then stopped by Safeway and saw the same boxes of cookies for more than double the price.
