Borat's Profile
Reykjavik Iceland Report
really? i found the sea baron's food to be utterly disgusting. fishy, unclean tasting, the absolute lowest food culture anywhere in the world.
Icelandic Food Suggestions?
baejarins bestu hot dog stand. skip the rest and save a whole lot of money and disappointment.
unless you have access to a kitchen and buy a leg of lamb, any fresh fish, skyr, the red potatoes are quite special. most of the "cuisine" tastes like it is from a caveman. and most all ethnic foods are embarrassingly bad. the baked goods are wonderful.
Iceland Bankrupt: Is this a good thing for visitors?
absolutely not. Iceland is one of the biggest tourist gouges in the world. most of the restaurants are sub standard. the price of any desirable clothing is a good 40% more than in nyc for example.
So sick of overpriced Westchester!
Just moved to Westchester. Have been frantically trying to find a "good" restaurant, let alone something that is worth what you are paying for. Just like all of the other services, I feel like I'm constantly being gouged here. I thought Manhattan was expensive... The places I used to complain about are heads and shoulders better than the food here.
Sad. Really sad. Such low standards people have here. The only place that I have found that is excellent, and feel the prices are reflective is Sushi Mikes in Dobbs Ferry.
That is it. Nothing else.
Ippudo review
Even Santoka walks all over Ippudo. Momofuku leans towards charlatanry, I think, and also lacks depth. But Ippudo just plain sucks. Even the trendy tacky interior does not save it.

What we had:
Pork shoulder, tripe, escarole salad, summer squash, pasta with duck ragu. Nice Tuscan wine.
Tripe: trying to be interesting, but unbalanced, the nutmeg way overpowering. Tripe cooked ok, but not integrated.
Pork Shoulder: slightly overcooked, parts were dry, balsamic reduction quite boring. The good fatty juicy parts of the meat were enjoyable, but not interesting.
Pasta with Duck ragu: Fresh pasta, pretty good. Ragu, salty, duck not much in evidence. Again a lack of balance.
The wine was actually the best part of our dinner.
After hearing about this place from so many people, we found it kind of a B.S. experience.
Overhyped, rather mediocre, underwhelming and disappointing as well.
Save your dough.
If somebody knows of a more "real", simple and simply more good Italian place, please post.
Thanks.
Ippudo review
Add to the list of trendy, slightly better than mediocre ramen places. The miso broth was sweet. How stupid is that?
the hot and spicy tofu appetizer is gooey with sugar.
the lard laden broth is a cheap way out.
the pork was dry and flavorless.

Nothing compares to the Giant Hamburger I grew up with as a kid in Davis, CA. I'm on a perpetual search and will post when I find it. The simplest things are the hardest things to do, right?
Best Korean Barbecue in Koreatown
I am Korean which makes it more difficult for me to find really good Korean food, ignorance truly IS bliss...
I think the chicken dish is Kanpoongkee. It is a chinese/korean dish, maybe an offshoot of kungpow chicken, but much more tasty in my opinion.
Glad you enjoyed Kunjip.
Les Halles: a review
Maybe 4 months. And I forgot to add that the sardine appetizer was a joke. Horribly not fresh.
Best Korean Barbecue in Koreatown
Sadly, there is no good korean barbecue in Koreatown. That's the truth. end of story.
Les Halles: a review
Avoid Les Halles on Park Ave. The service is horrendous. Last time my wife and I were there, they realized that they screwed up our order after an hour of waiting. The manager made no effort to rectify the their mistake. They were busy that night, so the food was really mediocre. The only thing that is pretty consistent there is the quality of the fries. We will never return.
Best Korean Barbecue in Koreatown
Kunjip is one of the worst korean food experiences I've ever had. Truly mediocre food.
Best Bakeries in the city?
sullivan street bakery. One of the most undisappointing establishments in the city.
Best Falafel in NYC?
Hate to tell you, but Azuri is kind of a mediocre place. Yes, it is better than most, but it is still mediocre. The salads are at first impressive... they come off as fresh and delectable, but after a couple of trips, it wears thin. the falafel generally tastes like cardboard. I don't know where THE place is, but it's not Azuri.
Burgers! Please Opine regarding your faves
As for Burger Joint, a place I have been to dozens of times, I'll admit that it is OK, and I get a little satisfaction out of the campy, cultish surroundings, but have never understood all the raves of their actual burger. The only way I can explain it is that they kind of win by default because noone knows how to make a good burger anymore. Also, if they didn't have their B.S. surroundings, I don't think they would have the notoriety that they enjoy.

Better Burger on 9th ave. bet. 42nd and 43rd is a pretty damn tasty burger. I rank it easily higher than shake shack and the burger joint. I don't know if it is the best I've ever had, but there is a no nonsense quality to it that I appreciate.

"even at the Asiate in New York..." ???
You speak of Asiate as it were something special. By the way I have dined there several times, and have always considered it the height of charlatanry. The food I found totally uninteresting, tasted like it was microwaved, and the service mediocre. Most amateurs and posers would be taken in by the faux glamour and the overly priced menu. I will grant that the view is nice. The subtext to restaurants like Asiate is "we want your money".
Sushi Yasuda Review
Oh, you want specifics? The rudeness I and my family experienced at Kuruma I would describe as arrogant disdain mixed with a palpable unwelcome. I have an idea why, but you probably don't want me to get into it here. Let's not go there.
As to the comparison with Masa, it is also 3 to 4 times the price of Yasuda, is it not?
Barcibo Enoteca - Broadway bet 69-70 Anyone been?
Go. It's excellent. Good vibe, the food is very good. Good wine. Stylish, excellent service and on the UWS of all places.
Sushi Yasuda Review
I have been to Kuruma, several times. I have always been impressed by the quality of the fish there, but find the service rude as hell. I will never return. I have never been to Masa.
Kuruma's fish is definitely on the highest levels of sushi culture in nyc.
Sushi Yasuda Review
I agree most heartily with Porthos. After Yasuda, all other nyc sushi experiences are totally and utterly ruined for me. Yasuda is kind of like the Tiger Woods of Sushi. There is no competition. Rarely does a day go by without fantasizing about the sushi at Yasuda.
Sushi Seki Review
My wife and I finally made it to Seki's after years of hearing how great it was from friends. We found it to be one of the most disappointing sushi experiences ever. We found nothing artistic about Seki's "creations", which we found phony and incoherant, service was not very attentive, the quality of fish mediocre, I would never recommend this place or return.
Best noodles in the city (ramen)
I've been eating the miso ramen at sapporo for about 12 years now. The gyoza is quite good, and the miso ramen is also very good. There is something slightly polluted about the taste which keeps it from being totally satisfying such as Santoka.
Best noodles in the city (ramen)
Santoka is by far the best ramen in the nyc area. The broth is vibrant and lively. The pork is gorgeous.
