Campari tomatoes -- tried them yet?
Well, I just bought 14 oz for 3.99 at Albertson's in San Diego...good...not knock your socks off but way better than you average hot house...worth the price?...for me, not that I am wealthy, probably....4 bucks is a fairly small indulgence if you need a decent tomato out of season...
Panama City, Panama for a 12 hour layover..food /nightlife rec's?
Hotel wise the Marriot is accross the street from Beirut and is quite nice for that Chain...never stayed there but people tell me the Bristol is very nice on the more boutique end...
Panama City, Panama for a 12 hour layover..food /nightlife rec's?
Do not miss Beirut, a Lebanese restaurant in Bella Vista....absolutley the best Lebanese food I have ever had, extremley excellent service, which is rare in Panama, and a very festive atmoshphere..a huge patio...a mixed feast for two was 48 bucks...probably a dozen or so mixed Mezzes with fresh out of the oven, puffed up pitas...then they clear that away and bring out the kabaobs, lamb chicken and beef with rice and green salad... one could also order ala carte if one would care to....Also not to be missed is the Cheviche vendors inside the Mariscos Market near Casco Viego....cups of impeccably fresh Ceviche are one dollar...El Trapiche on Via Argentina is probably the best for traditional Panamanian food...a little heavy but a good nieghborhood to walk around with tons of choices..Have fun..
Dining room with a fireplace?
I recall Barbarella in La Jolla Shores has a fireplace....I think two, one inside, and one outside in the back...pretty good food, woodfired oven items...Give a call or check website...Good Luck!
Degradation of Worcestershire Sauce
I could not aggree more that L&P is not what it was. I made this recipie from Savuer several months back and am happy to report excellent results...not exactly as I remember L&P...I think they used to give it time in wood barrels, not sure. Next time I make the Savuer version I will slightly decrease the sweet and up the anchovies a bit.....but it is very well worth making...
Things you want to try making
I once watch the cooks at one of San Diego's most beloved taco shops put a large metal strainer full of rice directly into the deep fat fryer and leave it there for about 90 seconds before taking it out to drain...the rice had noticeably changed color...nearly toasted in appearence.....I think this long toasting in plenty of fat is what gives the rice the allusive texture that is hard to duplicate at home....
Fresh Poke to go?
If you happen to be looking for Poke in East County,... and who isn't?.., the very excellent meat counter at Valley Farms Market, corner of Bancroft and Campo Road, sells a pretty good version.
They have a small but by far the best fish counter in the area, in the summer excellent supplies of salmon and halibut flown in and picked up several times weekly, also usually a selection or two from local waters...
San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.
I just saw a sign for new location on Spring Street, just north of the94 freeway, south of the Henry's Market, in La Mesa. The last few times I had the carnitas, I felt the quality had been slipping, so I hope that a new location will improve things..
Colicchio & Sons' Parker House Rolls: Anyone tried to make this?
I made that recipe, as written, last year for Thanksgiving ...they were very good, if not amazing. They key is to allow enough time for rising, in that there is a small amount of yeast...don't rush it and don't panic and it is very worthwhile...
What's Your Favorite Source for Rye Bread in SD?
Trader Joe's has a pretty good onion rye, my only complaint being its size and shape being rather small and round, which limits the number of slices that are really usable for sandwiches, but the flavor and texture are good..
Black Bean Soup Recipe?
Try the recipe in James Beard's classic American Cooking...he declares it to be one of the best of all soups...and it is indeed wonderful.
Looking for Some Good Peach and Blackberry Cobbler Recipes
I will second the link posted by blueberrypie on epicurious....best ever and simple and can be doubled or tripled and is great with berries as well as stone fruits....it has a great balance is interesting in that the fruit is less sweet than the buiscut part.....highly reccomended
A kumquat by any other name?
I can tell you that they are beautiful trees that produce a lot of fruit...consider planting a dwarf or semi dwarf, as the standards are quite large and will produce more fruit than you could handle....they do thrive in heat and can handle temps in the 20s but can't take hard frosts...
ceviche
Check out Rick Bayless's web site... he gives a couple of excellent recipies as well as general tips on cheviche
Hominy recipes?
I remember a James Beard recipe, I think from American Cookery, for hominy cooked down in heavy cream salt and pepper, which while obviously very caloric, is very delish and excellent with ham...Easter anyone?
Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?
Not a restaurant per se, but the Cheese Shop La Jolla since 1972...
Looks like Chateau Orleans is closed :(
I actually worked there circa 1980...after they moved Doug Organ opened a short lived place, name I don't recall, in that location before he was involved in the Wine Seller/ Brasserie...But I think Chateau Orleans was open from 1985 or so...a long run and indeed sad to hear they are gone...

Chateau Orleans
926 Turquoise St Ste H, San Diego, CA 92109
Looks like Chateau Orleans is closed :(
Anyone remember when that location housed Gustaf Anders?..they drew big crowds from La Jolla....then they moved to La Jolla shores and lost their shirt..
What to stuff when grapeleaves are out of season?
Collard greens make a great vehicle for stuffing..remove just a bit of the thick stem at the base of the leaf..blanch for a moment...trim to whatever size you need...almost the same as a grape leaf..
What to do with Kumquats?
Hi All,
Any ideas on what to do with a bumper crop of Kumquats...I have made a tasty marmalade but wondering if anyone has more creative ideas...
Breakfast in La Mesa
Mario's of La Mesa on La Mesa Blvd. does a pretty good mexican breakfast..Grilled Tamales red or green, Machaca...good rice and beans...
Best plate of Fish and Chips
Hard to believe but La Mesa's own Beef and Bun on Fletcher Parkway has darn good fish and Chips..unfortunately no beer to go with but really worth a try
San Diego Wedding Caterers and Bakeries
I have worked a few events for Continental Catering based in La Mesa and can vouch for their quality...a first rate organization capable of any level of service and food you you could want..
Spainsh Chorizo...Where to find?
Anybody know a local source of Spainsh style Chorizo...East county prefered but anywhere in San Diego okay...Thanks!
San Diego - good Chinese?
Anybody know if Spicy City on Convoy is still going...It was quite good a couple years ago
Comicon restaurant recommendations
I always sing the praises of the Cheese Shop in the Gaslamp..breakfast and lunch only...takeout also....not everything as good as others but if you seek out the stuff that is housemade you can eat quite well for, at least by Gaslamp standards, not much money...
Which Places do you Frequent because the Owners Appreicate your Patronage
Rana's in Spring Valley in addition to serving excellent food in the style of Mexico City has a very appriciatve owner.....
So where is a good breakfast in SD?
I would once again like to put a vote in for the Cheese Shop in the gaslamp. Kind of a silly name since they don't really seem to feature a cheese-centric menu, but there are some seriously tasty items, I think the best buttermilk pancakes in town, scratch biscuits and gravy, terrific soups made by the father of the couple that owns it and even a house smoked brisket sandwich with a terrific home made sauce, not too sweet, that beats the heck out of Phil's.....the place used to suffer from lousy service but they seemed to have righted the ship somewhat it that regard.
Best sit down mexican restaurant in SD
Rana's in Spring Valley just off highway 94 at Kenwood has good regional food. Not touristy but plenty tasty. Same stripmall as Fresh and Easy market.
Foodie staying in Gaslamp District. Am I screwed?
I would suggest The Cheese Shop on 4th Ave for a good breakfast served any time....also serving good sandwiches for takeout.
