Desperately seeking meat in Allentown

Several places might be of interest though you may have to check ahead for the cuts you want. One is the pork store in Blooming Glen, an old fashioned butcher:
http://www.bloomingglencatering.com/R... Don't be put off by the 'catering' word on their website -- they have a retail store.

Another good source -- and closer -- is Baringer Bros. Meat in Richlandtown and at the Allentown Farmer's market. We used them to process our lamb for many years and they'll provide whatever cuts you like. If they're not familiar with a cut, bring instructions and they'll take good care of you.

FYI: There's a halal butcher in Allentown, very clean and personable with good Turkish food on site: http://www.yelp.com/biz/aci-halal-all....

Dietrich's is about 20 minutes from Allentown and they have a wide selection of meats and lovely smoked meats and poultry (including smoked duck!) Lard, too. http://www.dietrichsmeats.com/

If you feel like an outing, you might consider Illg's Meat, A German butcher near Warrington where you could, almost literally, eat off the floor. http://www.illgsmeats.com/ Super selection of meat and ethnic specialties such as landjager and weisswurst. Check their hours of business before you go. They're not as busy on weekdays if you can get there.

Hope this helps!

Curry leaves and other Indian ingredients in Denver?

Thank you, cookinuptop! Mississippi & Fed should be an easy trip. Is it a large Indian market with produce and meat, or a smaller 'corner' store? But thanks a million for mentioning Bangla Bazaar. I looked on the map and see it's right near Arash Market and maybe an H-Mart -- one-stop shopping!

Curry leaves and other Indian ingredients in Denver?

Hello Western Hounds,

I'll be staying with my sister in Denver for a couple of months and would like to know where I might find curry leaves and other Indian ingredients. I've looked through the threads on different markets but don't know which might have the best Indian ingredients.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance!

best Jewish deli City Line & vicinity

Thank you all! We now have several options, even one in KoP where our guest from Brazil will be working for a couple of weeks. If we visit more than one will report back. Much obliged!

best Jewish deli City Line & vicinity

Since I haven't lived in Philadelphia or its nearby suburbs for some years now, I'd love to hear what fellow hounds have to say about their favorite (and not-so-favorite) Jewish delis these days. We're looking for lunch on a Saturday. Pardon if my search missed an older thread on this topic. Thanks!

best Portuguese grilled chicken in Montreal? resto or takeout

Thanks, Cherylmtl. Looking forward to trying Portugalia.

Thank you, Maximilien, for refreshing my memory on Romados' name. I'll be sure to give them another try.

best Portuguese grilled chicken in Montreal? resto or takeout

I love Montreal. My first meal in your civilized city was a delectable, perfectly grilled half-chicken that left me gazing sadly at a pile of clean bones while I licked my fingers. Doval cooked that chicken while I waited, listening to men trade stories after their day's work, but it seems to have been a unique event. Romados couldn't compete. Could I have your favorite sources? Food ultimate concern, have car, enjoy casual.

Thanks so much!

Tutto Mario in Chalfont

We were very excited to try Tutto Mario this weekend, but were somewhat disappointed with the salads and pastas we tried. The bruschetta, however, was deliciously seasoned even with its pale off-season tomatoes. The house salad -- always a test -- arrived a bit soggy with dressing and leaned too heavily on balsamic vinegar. Fresh pretty standard greens but overwhelmed. The avocado salad with mozzerella and balsamic reduction: also good quality ingredients, but they didn't really complement each other. My husband found the portobello ravioli very good, and the penne putanesca was richly tomato and skillfully seasoned -- lively with heat but without damaging the other flavors. The lobster ravioli, however, was not a plesant experience. The pasta seemed too thick, and in a thick cream/tomato sauce became sort of gooey. Generous with lobster but couldn't really taste it through the sauce. The puttanesca and lobster ravioli portions were too large for us to finish, so we didn't have dessert.

The people serving were delightful and attentive, and except for the loud music (Sinatra, Ella, etc.) which people had to talk over, we weren't put off by the informal environment or the 'retail-style' building.

So, pasta and starter for three: $100 plus tip.

Restaurant Etiquette

Thank to all for your advice. Our trip included no new dinner adventures as planned, partly due to our favorites being on vacation (P. Plateau reopened the day we left!). But we indulged ourselves at the markets instead and have now, sadly, returned to American food.

Restaurant Etiquette

Hounds coming in from Pensylvania on a whirlwind and don't have much time! Is it possible to go to somewhere like Le Montee/Bouchonne and just order cheese and wine? Or to La Colombe for chocolate dessert and coffee? Or would that be seen a poor form?

What did you cook today, and was it good?

Dear Carswell, thank you so very much! Monday I'm off to the pork butcher first thing. These recipes sound perfect for adapting to the chilly weather.

Here's one for you: Linguini with broccoli sauce (from Amalfi coast)
Section 1-2 large heads of broccoli (aith some peeled stem) and boil until tender in very large pot filled with water. Add 1/4 tsp to water if necessary to preserve the green color. In the meantime, cover the bottom of a 9- or 10-inch iron skillet with good olive oil. Coarsely chop 1 head of garlic and cook in oil until golden with 3-4 dried hot peppers. Remove broccoli from water, reserve water for cooking the pasta, and add chopped broccoli to the garlic and oil. Simmer while the pasta cooks. Toss sauce with pasta in a large bowl and enjoy with roast chicken and salad.

Thanks again.

Carswell -- could you provide recipes for the soup and pork at least, please, since this dinner sounds so mouthwatering? I have squash, apples, pears, potatoes and herbs fresh from the garden... Much obliged.
