Hot and sour soup. We make it LOTS, although we use black vinegar and sub in dried lily buds for what I'm remembering as a balsamic/other vinegar approximation and bamboo shoots. What a delicious recipe.
Where to buy dried porcini mushrooms?
Ocean State Job Lot in Dedham--30 grams/1.05 oz for $2.75--far cheaper and just as good as any where else I've purchased them.
Boston to Columbia SC--what will we eat?!!!!
Thank you so much for all of your thoughts. I can't say that our potential move is entirely voluntary, but you do what you have to do, and we have family in Hilton Head as well as in the Myrtle Beach area so leaving Boston, which I love, wouldn't be all bad. At any rate, it does sound like I could adjust foodwise with all of your terrific suggestions, and 'foraging' is always half the fun anyway. I appreciate that you took the time to respond! And we already love grits anyway!
Boston to Columbia SC--what will we eat?!!!!
We may move from Boston to the Columbia area. I've never been. We're all about cooking, food and wine and I'm a little worried that I will have trouble adjusting my cooking habits. Are there lots of CSAs, organic produce outlets, any ethnic markets, or southern markets, cookware shops, etc. We are all about fresh and local. Don't hesitate to try new things. Realize that my last resort markets will no longer be Whole Foods or Trader Joes, that Asian, Italian, Armenian etc. markets and shops with extensive cookbook selections are probably few and far between, but what new food adventures will I be able to have?
Bulk Poppy Seeds reasonably priced?
I need more than the few tablespoons in the spice jars at the supermarket and don't want to pay too too much. Any ideas would be appreciated--esp in the West Roxbury, Roslindale, JP or Brookline areas.
Apple Picking Near Boston NOT Like Disney?
Went to Cider Hill Farm last Saturday. It was lovely and busy but not too too crowded (except for that insane Cider Doughnut line, which wasn't a line we would have braved). While we could *see* many many apples on the trees, there were no apple poles and tree climbing is prohibited, and all the apples at reasonable picking levels were gone baby gone. While they appear to try hard to map out the apple varieties, the rows, not the trees, are labelled so it gets rather confusing very quickly if you are trying to locate a specific variety and wander a bit. Apples are available in the shop, already picked, for the same price--$1.75/lb. We skipped on buying cider if only because it was outrageously priced, which was too bad because we wanted to ferment some. It is a lovely place, but I doubt we'll go back--I want to pick the apples I see, not just admire them.
Raspberry Lime Rickey Syrup
Thanks so much for your recommendations. I'm passing them along and I know they will be really helpful!
Raspberry Lime Rickey Syrup
A friend has posed the following question to me...do you Bostonians have any recommendations (homemade or store bought?)
Do you know of a really good raspberry syrup that I can use for raspberry lime rickeys? I have always used raspberry Zarex, but apparently they aren’t making it any more and I can’t find it anywhere. I’m well known for making great rlr’s. I’m having company this coming weekend and I don’t want to disappoint them.
Can you help?
Great deal on Bulk chocolate at Ocean State!
As of Tuesday night, the Quincy Ocean State had a good amount of bags--semi, bitter and unsweetened. They were located just as EmmaFrancis described. Thanks for the tip!
