Two (non-football weekend) dinners in Colombia?

Are you staying in Bogota ? Medellin ? Ha ! Just kidding. Of course you mean Columbia SC.

I like Doc's and Little Pig for BBQ. Rockaways on Rosewood for a good Pimento Cheese burger. The Pimento cheese fries are great also. Terra in West Columbia, Motor Supply and Blue Marlin in the Vista.

If you like middle eastern try Al-Amir on Main st.,

BBQ in Columbia SC

Doc's BBQ on shop road is good. I second little pigs as a good choice. It's on I-20 behind the Blue Cross Blue Shield tower.

Burger lunch today in Columbia, SC

I agree with the other poster. In addition I will recommend you consider Zesto's (several locations), Rush's (several locations) and the Salty Nut (on green st. near 5 points).

I'm one of the ones that likes Rockaway's. They've had an up and down period especially after the last building burned down. I feel they are in an UP period now and I really like their burgers. The Rockaway burger with pimento cheese is my fav.

I can't speak to the quality of Edna's burgers, but the hot dogs are good.

Columbia, SC BBQ

There is Palmetto Pig on the corner of Pulaski and Green and then you've got Doc's BBQ and Southern Buffet on Shop Rd. I think Big T's is still out on Garner's Ferry in a strip mall across from Wal-mart. I prefer Doc's.

looking for south carolina bbq

Shortly after you get onto I-20 at Columbia and start heading East, you might want to try Lil Pigs BBQ. It's an All you can eat buffet. It's just behind the Blue Cross Blue Shield building on Alpine Rd.

In Bishopville on I-20 you can try Watfords BBQ and Wards BBQ. They are both on Hwy 15 heading into town.

Best burger in Columbia, SC

I agree that Salty Nut is good. I like Zesto's and believe it or not Rush's.

I had some bad experiences at Rockaway's after it fist reopened as well. I recently returned after recommendations from friends. They are much better now. I think their burgers are actually better.

Vella's on Knox Abbott has a good burger and Murray's on Charleston Highway (near the Airport) has excellent burgers.

Places to eat in Columbia SC

Zesto's (several locations) for great broasted/fried chicken, not bad hamburgers either.

Little Pigs BBQ for some excellent pork BBQ. It's and all-u-can-eat buffet. Out on Alpine road near the Blue Cross Blue Shield tower.

Lunch in Florence SC

The best place I'm familiar with in Florence is Redbone Alley. We have one in Sumter as well and the food and atmosphere are excellent.

No Chowhounds in Columbia, SC????

I'll be interested to hear what you think about Doc's. I didn't like it. The fried chicken was good, but not a reason to go there in my book. The BBQ was not to my liking. Not very fresh tasting and the sauce tasted like pure vinegar.

I really like Little Pigs because of the BBQ Hams they put out on the pulling station behind the utensil stand. They also have the chicken livers and gizzards that I like as well.

No Chowhounds in Columbia, SC????

There is also a Dukes BBQ out on Platt Springs Rd. back behind the Airport. Not sure of the road names, it's kind of hard to find. I think it is somehow related to all the other Dukes BBQ places in the state, but I'm not sure how.

The BBQ is good and they have fatback on the buffet. A personal weakness of mine.

Sumter, SC

As a Sumter resident I have to sadly say that there is not much to choose from.

I guess the best local non-chain place would be Redbone Alley. It's in an old Bi-Lo plaza on broad street as you head into Sumter. It's across from the Super Walmart and Lowes. Other than that, it's pretty much chains. We used to have some decent local owned places, but I guess they couldn't compete with the chains.

If you are looking for BBQ. The try Ward's on Alice Drive. It's pretty good. No buffet. They use tomato based sauce. Their hushpuppies are great.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Little Mexico - Columbia

Looks like you should not go back anytime soon. I saw on the Resturant Report on the local news last night that Little Mexico got a 75 (a D) on their food inspection.

Another gem closed in Columbia SC

I loved the fried chicken. It was a nice place to eat, albeit a bit smokey at times. But I guess that was part of its charm.

Lizzard's Thicket, SC - Elmwood

I've found a couple of the Lizard's Thickets to be hit-or-miss. I think the one on Beltline near Midlands Tech is not all that great either. I usually go to the one across the river on knox abbott or the new one out on 76/378 going toward Sumter to be my favorites.

I love No Name too. I wish they would do something about parking. I don't really mind the crowds, but it sucks not being able to find a parking spot.

Good BBQ around Columbia, SC?

Another BBQ place not worth the trip is Doc's BBQ on Shop Road. The BBQ was not good, the sauce is PURE vinegar and the whole place smelled of some type of cleaning chemical.

Good BBQ around Columbia, SC?

Millender's closed about 2 years ago (maybe a little less). From what I can see from the interstate the property is still for sale, but it's very hard to get to now. They did some strange stuff to the interstate and the frontage road.

I like Dukes by the Airport. They are one of the few places that still puts fatback on their buffet line.

The last time I ate at Bo-B-Q I did not enjoy it. Also the last time I ate at Palmetto Pig near the University the meat tasted like it had been frozen. Not tasty at all.

Dinner in Mystic

I'm sure by now the original poster has left Mystic and since I was the original recommender for Abbotts I thought I'd leave with this comment.

I was a tourist. Abbott's was recommended to my girlfriend and myself by locals (more than one). We went and enjoyed the food and the view. I thought the original poster might enjoy it as well.

Dinner in Mystic

Using that logic, every place in Mystic will be touristy. It is after all a touristy place.

The food is still great.

Bar Harbor Area Dining Report- week of 8/17/06

I ate at Thurston's last week. I thought the food was excellent and a good value. I had lobster and steamed clams.

As for the look of the staff, I must have picked a good night. Everyone at the window where you pick your lobster's seemed like young high school/college aged young ladies.

Trip Report - Camden and MDI (long)

I was in Bar Harbor last week. I fell in love with Thurston's. It's my new favorite lobster pound. I can't wait to go back next year.

Portland - Weekend in Food & Drink (long)

Was in Portland last week. The fries at Duck Fat are fantastic ! I had them with the duck gravy, my girlfriend had the garlic aoli.

The homemade sodas were great too. I had cherry.

Dinner in Mystic

If you want fresh lobster and clams I recommend Abbotts. It's not in Mystic proper but just down the road in Noank. Not fancy, but excellent and a pretty good value. Search the web for Abbott's lobster in the rough. You'll need the driving instructions.
