SF Reservations made... now what to eat?!

I love the duck basteeya at Aziza! They also have many excellent cocktails - maybe read up on the drink menu and go early to try some before dinner.

Any "wow" lunch places in Napa Valley? Looking for more ambiance vs fine food.

Brix is a favorite for the great vineyard and garden view out the back. . . Call to see if they are seating on the patio

Carmel Itinerary - need some help please

If I were on my honeymoon, I would love Casanova for a romantic dinner. Let them know when you make the reservation and they will take good care of you! Their food is wonderful and the ambiance there always feels very intimate to me.

Napa Valley Wine Tours...without a car

Check out Bruce at Wine Country Safari. He runs a small company with individual service. He is super knowledgeable about high quality small producers and will put together a tour fitting for a celebration. He has lots of great reviews on trip advisor.

03 Bistro and Lounge - SF Civic Center

Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience here you can share . . . a friend and I are thinking of trying it on a Monday prior to a lecture downtown at the Herbst Theater. Our fall back position is Hayes Street Bar and Grill. Looking for drinks/snacks/possible meal - walkable to the Theater.

Winter Trip to Calistoga

Roaming around Oxbow is fun and recommended, but I would eat at Grace's table - especially if it is cool weather (likely that time of year). I just finished a meal of cassoulet there this evening and it is wonderful for winter chill busting.

Preliminary Itinerary for Yountville/St Helena....comments/reviews greatly welcomed

haha :-) - but then you would miss all that scrumptious enjoyment of savoring them! Have you tried the ribs and potatoes at RG Wolfe?
Seriously though, I think it's better to eat real food including fatty stuff than a lot of the things people are eating these days . . .

Rutherford Grill has excellent baby back ribs . . . worth a trip I think. I always get the coleslaw and potatoes colcanon(sp?) as sides rather than what is offered on the menu

(another) Question about braising

It just sneaks out during the long-ish cooking times that braising usually calls for. Lids look tight, but usually leak through tiny openings between lid and pot . . .

Kitchen war injuries..

Christmas dinner last week and my 87 year old dad is cooking a huge prime rib. When I arrive at 4, I am informed the roast is "cooking way too fast" based on his oven thermometer. So as I am slicing potatoes on my mandolin for the Cook's scalloped potato recipe I am feeling major time pressure to get the dish prepped and in the oven . . . he is pacing the kitchen and then looks at my mandoline and says "that it looks dangerous . . ."
not a minute later, I have managed to slice a huge gushing flap into my thumb pad . . . argh!!!!! I cannot remember the last time I cut myself in the kitchen. The kicker is I am trained as a surgeon and really hate making an error with a sharp object.

Goose & Gander in St. Helena?

I have not eaten there, but just got a report today from a Napa friend who has and he thought it was a great place to celebrate his birthday in the last week or so. I trust his tastes is restaurants, so will add it to my "must try soon" list.

Butternut squash in OVEN: not soft !!!

I just cook them whole - poke the seed end a few times with a knife so it won't burst and put in the oven on a piece of foil at about 350 until very roasty looking - up to 1.5 hours or more for a big one. The skin will be getting dark spots and it will be bubbling and starting to ooze when done. Remove from oven and let cool a bit - cut, scoop the very soft flesh off the skin, add butter, mash and eat:-) When cooked this way it will have a heavenly caramelized flavor. You can speed the process up by microwaving the whole squash first to get it hot before roasting in the oven.

Grace's Table is also open for breakfast and brunch . . . although I have only been there for lunch and dinner . . . their food has always been excellent.

SF/Napa trip - would love opinions on my restaurant/vineyard choices

You might like Grace's Table in downtown Napa . . . not too pricey and very good food and service. Lots of locals go there for a nice upscale meal without breaking the bank.

Will I hate campari?

I made the mistake of ordering a Campari on the rocks once years ago. It was truly undrinkable for me. I have not been successful in appreciating it except for in very small amounts in a mixed cocktail. I think some people are very sensitive to bitter flavors . . .

Potato salad secrets?

This reminds me that I have been using fish sauce (from Thai cooking) in my dressing for potato salad and it gives it that great rich and salty flavor that is hard to pinpoint. It's basically fermented anchovy juice . . .

Potato salad secrets?

sbp - I agree with the celery seed!! I use quite a lot and then let it sit for a whlle to flavor the dressing. Also, I like to add some pressed garllic (not too much though) and some green onion. I always use Best Foods mayo and lots of hard boiled eggs. I LOVE potato salad!!!
