Props to the pasta nazi - Franco's Pasta Irvine

Yeah, been wanting to hit this place for the linguini & clams after reading Monster Muching's write up on it from years back. Glad to hear that it is still in play.

Yeah we tried them when they were introduced. The review above is pretty much spot on. Looked lots better than they tasted.

ISO Recommendations - Best of Little Saigon

Excellent topic/posts
Adding a few more to check out:
Dat Thanh (10032 McFadden, one block south of Brookhurst) killer nem nuong rolls. The David to Brodard's Goliath.
Quan Hy (9727 Bolsa Ave.) for excellent Hue cuisine
Tan Huong Mai (in the shopping center at Bolsa & Brookhurst) a little family run place , everything is excellent especially the banh cuon
Bun Bo Hue Gia Hoi (9541 Bolsa at Bushard in Bolsa Mini Mall) This place has been there forever, it's run down but still clean inside & their Bun Bo Hue rules.
Also seconding Pho Tau Bay for their banh cuon. To me, their thin, delicate rice sheets are total bliss.

I've found it many times in my local Ralph's, also check any middle eastern type food markets, have found it often there also.

Pho and banh mi in Little Saigon

For pho, try these two:
Quan Hy, 9727 Bolsa Ave., Westminster 714-775-7179
or
Vy Da , 9950 Bolsa Ave, #A & B, Westminster 714-531-2905

For bahn mi, I like the Che Cali place at the corner of Brookhurst & Talbert,
18122 Brookhurst. Fountain Valley. Not in Little Saigon, but is cleaner & the crowds are mostly non existant, & the sandwiches hit the spot.

Broccoli rabe-- where?

I actually found it this past weekend at my local O.C. Ralph's of all places, and it was cheaper than what I usually pay for it at the middle eastern market I usually get it from, & looked pretty fresh.
I love it blanched, chopped, then sauteed w/ garlic ,crumbled hot italian sausage, garlic, then tossed with orecchiette

Road Trip Review: Panini Cafe, L'Hirondelle, Gabby's, Mas' Islamic Chinese, Tudor House and Others

Totally agree on the two from your list that we've tried, L'Hirondelle, and Panini Cafe.
Panini Cafe is near us, & opened in my former local fave spot Pasta Pomodoro.
We went there a month or so after it opened & were mostly disappointed. We tried dishes from the Mediterranean side of the menu, but virtually all were bland ,devoid of flavor. L'Hirondelle was the polar opposite of Paninis.

Il Dolce Pizzeria- Costa Mesa....finally a real deal unpretentious artisanal pizzeria

Still have not been there yet for dinner, but we got back there a week ago for a birthday lunch w/ 3 friends. We could smell the almond wood smoke out in the parking lot. They had two waiters there, one was obviously new & in training, but the flow of service was fine for us, anyways. Two of us had paninis, (both eaters gave thumbs up, although one of the sandwiches sent out was the wrong one), the other two had pizzas, a patata (mine)& a proscuitto e rucola (hers). She, who is tiny & normally brings back most of her lunches for leftovers dinner, scarfed the entire thing by herself! My patata was perfect, the ingredients seemed enough to satisfy, atop that lovely crust.

OC's better or best lox & bagels resto breakfast?

Have only been here once (on a whim passing by), but I had my usual (everything w/ schmear, and an Americano to go. The bagel was huge & well flavored, and they serve Kean's coffe there. There was another party dining in & one of them got a bagel w/ lox & it looked pretty good from where I stood.

Where to get hot pepper hoagie relish in L.A.?

Thanks for the link to Wickles, ordered & just got my two jars yesterday. Looking forward to trying it out this weekend. Wasn't too expensive either, around $14 for two jars , shipped.

Il Dolce Pizzeria- Costa Mesa....finally a real deal unpretentious artisanal pizzeria

To be fair, it been several months since I've been to PeV, so my "taste memory" is a bit rusty by now. I want to go back there soon & do a comparo.
From the top of my head, I would say that they are pretty close, with an edge to PeV for the crust & the true wood fired oven.
Either way, I feel OC'ers are lucky enough to have two such places that can provide pies that are made with care & quality ingredients using the proper equipment.

Il Dolce Pizzeria- Costa Mesa....finally a real deal unpretentious artisanal pizzeria

OK, we just got back from there. Excellent pizza!! We got a farro salad ( very good flavors & textures, was seasoned perfectly) a caprese salad (was OK. IMO, but kind of skimped on the tomatoes & basil. The Moz was good, but I felt that the $11 was a bit high for this dish. Perhaps when tomatoes are in season, it will prove to be more worth it.
We ordered a salciccia & an al funghi & asked for "extra char" on the bottom. The smell of the freshly baked pies was wonderful, and they tasted even better. The crust I thought was pretty close to what I consider perfect - good flavor, not soggy, still some "give" when you bite in. This is the kind of pizza that you take your time eating, so you explore the different levels of taste & texture. It was really hard not being able to have a glass of red wine with this meal, will most definitely go back for dinnertime soon. We were the only people there until around noon, when another party of 4 came in, and some take out orders came in. We overheard the other dine in group also ordering their pie "well done". The son was our waiter, his mom & dad work the kitchen. This place is very clean & simple, has what looks to be a killer espresso machine & the desserts in the cold case look scrumptious (I didn't indulge...this time)
All of us enjoyed our food & plan on a return visit quite soon! This place needs customers!!! Apply within....often!!

Really want to try this place out soon.
What's the crowd level there during lunch time? Aim to get there around 11:45.
I've been to PeV & really enjoyed it, so am anxious to give Il Dolce a taste.

Little Saigon Adventure (long w/ pics) - Pho Tau Bay, Trieu Chau, Pho 79, Brodard

Made it for lunch today at Pho Tau Bay L.T.T after reading about it here. A little run down building but clean & bright inside. The banh cuon dac biet (large) & an ice tea was what I had - the rice sheet silky smooth, the fillings aromatic & very flavorful. This is the best example of this dish I have had! Funny, this place is just up the street from my old hang Pho Hoa Binh, which has kind of gone downhill after a sharp menu change/reduction. So finding this place is wonderful!! I will get around to trying their pho at some point, but not until I get burned out on their banh cuon first
Yeah....as if....

REAL German Bread

hmm..a bit of a drive for us, unfortunately. My wife & I try to check out all the local German bakeries/food shops we see for them, but no joy so far. You would think with Anaheim 's sizable German population, there would be such a place.

REAL German Bread

ooh man..That is one of my favorite memories of being over in Germany, getting up & going to the local bakery in my wife's little hometown to make the brötchen run for our breakfast.
I've yet to find anything that comes close around here. I'd make the drive to Peet's if it's true they somehow have access...
Also , Globe Deli on Harbor near 19th carries a few good German breads, just not a very big selection of them.

Hot Dog, Hot Dog, Hot Diggity Dog

I tried out Chicago's Best in the Food Court on Main near Jamboree last week in Irvine.
A Chicago style dog & fries for $3.65. It was pretty darn good, although I admit I was a thrown off my game a bit evaluating the dog itself as the fresh hot & tasty fries had me off on another tangent. Yum!
Planning a return visit soon, I really love the Chicago style in dogs.
