I am not sure cifzo, but I am considering a Cuckoo rice cooker, and was wondering how yours was holding up? Do you prefer it over your Zojirushi?

Kaju Sundubu

Went here last night (Friday), and well, it was an 'experience'. We put our name in at around 7:30, and was told the wait would be around 1 hour, so we went to a nearby bar to have a drink prior. Needless to say, they were busy. Three of us, and we ordered:
Oyster Kimchi soondubu, with kalbi
Veggie soondubu, with bibimbap
Clam soondubu

Oyster Kimchi was my favorite. All three were medium spicy, but the Oyster Kimchi was, for some reason the spiciest. Maybe it was from the kimchi.

The Kalbi was really good. Not overly sweet, and done very well.

Clam soondubu was one of my DC's favorites, and it was done quite well, but I would personally order it a notch spicier than the medium spice.

Banchan was very good, had about 6 different ones, all very tasty.

The veggie soondubu was burned. Upon tasting I thought it was perhaps supposed to be like that, but I later realized it probably shouldn't have.

We never got our bibimbap! We asked for it three times, and they looked perplexed as to why it hadn't yet come out, and then went into the kitchen. We finished the meal, and of course it was still in the bill. Since it was a combo order with the soondubu they did some funky prorated thing to take the bibimbap off the bill.

All in all, the food was definitely good, but I would definitely err towards visiting during a non-peak time, or wait a while for them to get all of their tweaks out...it being a new place and all.

New Bostonian's wish list

Thali: I've heard that Dosa Temple does a good veg Thali (and a good Dosa), but I haven't been. I never seen a non-veg Thali, but then again I haven't had much Indian in Boston area.

Banh Mi: I like Pho Viet's, which is located in the 88 food court across the river.

Strip T's increasing funkiness

I finally made it out on a Wednesday night. It was packed! We waited around 30 minutes for a table, starting around 7:30pm. Anyways, don't want to reiterate too much of what was covered in this thread, but we had:
(Special of the day) Grilled Sweetbread with pepper relish and cauliflower sauce - My first time having sweetbread! It was great--charred perfectly to get some character, but not overwhelming. The sweet pepper relish and cauliflower sauce just all went very well together. I was impressed!
Grilled Romaine w/oxtail and poached egg - As described in this thread, Amazing.
Fried Chicken with waffles and collared greens - Fried chicken was nice and juicy, and had a very nice crust. I kind of like how they left the chicken foot on the drumstick! Collard greens were really good as well, tossed in a nice dressing. For some reason I was perturbed by the additional $3 for syrup.
Dessert - Chocolate mouse with a shiitake mushroom kind of glaze, croutons, and thyme. Very strange combination, but the flavors really worked well to a nice combination.

All in all, my DC and I were very impressed, and I can't wait to go back. The way he put all the seemingly random flavors together was so exciting. Every dish was great and inventive. Probably the first restaurant where, although the food was amazing, I don't think I will get the same dishes again so I can try more! Well, maybe I will get the grilled romaine again ;)

Food Truck Season

There's also the Food Trucks that come to SoWa, the Sunday Farmer's market in the South End. This winter they started a Winter Farmers Market, which wasn't too shabby, and had the occasional Food Trucks (but located a few minutes walk from the Winter Farmers Market building). However, when the 'Summer' SoWa starts, I would assume, like last year, they'll have a few trucks, but not yet sure which ones they'll be as it appears that food truck vendors need to apply each year in order to be able to park at the event.

Bar/Restaurant with great whisky selection

Hello,

Trying to organized a birthday celebration for a whisky lover. Do any of you know any bars or restaurants with a good whisky selection (and hopefully good food)?

Thanks!

Russo's vs. Whole Foods

I think location also makes a difference. I drive past two Whole Foods on my way back home, and I always prefer the one in the city (Brighton) versus the Wayland one. Both are small, but the Brighton produce is consistently better. Wayland one will be more empty though, since I would think the suburban soccer moms have already done their food shopping during the day.

Russo's vs. Whole Foods

Seriously! I don't get it. It's that or the people who, for some reason, need to multiple tries when backing out of a spot.

Amazing Pie Recipe calls for uncooked eggs, how safe is this?

This past weekend I encountered a similar issue...recipe called for pasteurized eggs, and I didn't have any. I searched online and found that people put the (large) eggs in 140 degree water for 3 minutes, and that 'pasteurizes' it. Doubt it is as good as the real thing, but better than nothing.

Guchi's Midnight Ramen

Yea, I balked at the tickets and then realized that I'd probably rather buy tickets and know I have a spot than have to wait in line close to midnight, in the cold, to *hopefully* score a seat. I saw that the tickets were $25 plus $2.36 fee.

However, I hope they get a permanent place to do this. Ramen in Boston is lacking. If you search, there are some reviews out there, but this was from a more private tasting, and hence could be biased. I look forward to hearing the reviews from this past 'pop-up'.

Vietnamese for Valentine's -- Favorite Recipes?

ban xeo (Vietnamese crepe), you could do lemongrass chicken. Also, when I went to my Vietnamese friend's BBQ, his mom made this dish called Banh Beo...it was really good. It was like a rice pancake with shrimp/mung bean topping, covered with fish sauce. At the BBQ I ended up mostly eating this dish! Sorry, I'm not aware of any good recipes, but I figured it would be a good lead for something somewhat novel to try. It seems to be gluten free though.

Edit: Here's the wikipedia article on Banh Beo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A1n...
My friend's mother made it with mostly mung bean on top, and I think she also used dried shrimp, but it looks like the toppings are however you like them.

Anyone have a Vitamix? [moved from Not About Food]

I just got mine from Williams Sonoma this past holiday season. I love it. I make smoothies with it almost everyday and have been getting my fruits/veggies that way. I haven't really made anything else (just some cheese dip which was a bit salty). Yes, I heard they are cheaper at Costco, and come with the smaller 48oz jar, which is supposed to fit on the counter yet under kitchen cabinets. I do kind of wish I had the shorter Vitamix. Also, Bed Bath and Beyond has them, and you could probably use one of those 20% coupons to get it. I also heard that the recipe/information books that come with it are quite useful. The Williams Sonoma one came with a bunch of recipes, which I now realize I have been slacking on!

I heard Blendtec was good, but tend to be louder than Vitamix.

Must-eat and must-shop questions, with a home base of Coolidge Corner.

There's a few places in Washington Sq that I like. I enjoy going to Athans for desserts, and the Abbey (gastro pub), though I think the Abbey is a little on the pricey side. There's also Publick house, which is quite popular. Rod Dee is another thai place that is worth trying IMO...they have good food, but authenticity is on a per dish basis.

For cheaper sushi I like to go to Genki-ya. I get the 3-roll special take out with salad and soup for $13. You have to order online though: https://www.mealage.com/2foodmenu8.js...

For dim sum people usually recommend Winsor Dim Sum, China Pearl, or Hei la moon. All of which are in Chinatown

Le Creuset Newbie Questions

Hi LC fans, I'm not entirely sure if these are good prices (I am a LC newbie also), but I was walking through Bloomingdales last weekend and saw this sale on Le Creuset products (see attached picture). Unfortunately I do not know if the sale is still going on, but I'm sure a quick call to Bloomingdales would do the trick.

Can I really bake dinner in a toaster oven?

Yes! This is the one my mom has too and it's great. It beats the 'pants' off of my older sister's Waring toaster oven.

Can I really bake dinner in a toaster oven?

I bought my mom one a few years ago and she loves it. Granted it was a pretty nice one (convection, and pretty big). This past Thanksgiving she baked her apple pie in it. She does A LOT of things with it....it's pretty much a second oven when you need it!

Thai North in Brighton

I got takeout from here two days ago...khao soi and my DC got Siam Fried Rice. Khao soi was great! I felt the Siam Fried Rice was just ok...a little too 'wet' in my opinion, but I have no basis of authenticity.

I snapped a picture of their (latest?) thai menu, with their english names. I was too hungry to snap pictures of the food ;)

Best *Sashimi* in Boston?

Thanks everybody! Yeaa, For example, I think Genki-Ya is good for rolls, but not nigiri/sashimi as I've had bad cuts a few times. I'll definitely have to check out Uni and Toraya!

Best *Sashimi* in Boston?

I was wondering what the CH'ers thought the best sashimi place(s) were in Boston. A lot of reviews often say "sushi" which could mean nigiri, sashimi, rolls, etc. I realize that some places are only really good for rolls, and a lot of people just review based on funky rolls, so I'd like to find good places for the sashimi fans.

Different price points would be good to, because I personally cannot go to O Ya every night

Thoughts?

Pizza on an upside down cast iron skillet

I just started to get into pizza making (just made my first pizza from scratch last night, actually), and I read on this forum: http://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/inde...

that people sometimes use unglazed tile stones, which can apparently be found at home depot/lowes on the cheap. I haven't tried it myself, but apparently you have to "season" them in the oven for a couple hours before you use. Just search around that forum for more tips. Like I said, I plan on trying it eventually, but I'm easing my way into the pizza world, so the best I can do it point you towards a lead =)
