SE Asian - Thai or Vietnamese - on the west side
UWS, Hells Kitchen, West Village, doesn't matter. I never go out for this kind of food, so I don't know good places. My parents are coming to town and I want to take them someplace nice before they go to the theater. I'd rather avoid Theater District restaurants, but it's not out of the question.
Food quality and price are my biggest concerns; it's actually better if the place is not too fancy.
Any recommendations?
Allen & Son BBQ - Chapel Hill?
This happens all the time. It's best to call them before going there to make sure they are open.
Koreatown Christmas - group of 10 need help
I love love love Cho Dang Gol, 35th and 6th. Personal favorite is the ssam jung sik, which is pork belly and squid stir fry served up with lettuce for wrapping. Soups and stews are great too!
Maybe try to make a reservation for a group that big. I see families that size there all the time though.

What's a good place for Bibimbap?
I really love Cho Dang Gol, it is very rustic and delicious food. Their bibimbap is very good.
The food court on 32nd has decent bibimbap as well. You will see a lot of high school kids/ college freshmans here.

Where can i buy Benton's Bacon?
just buy a whole mess of it at a time, it freezes really well...
Tamil Nadu Bhavan - anyone been?
I've been there a half dozen times or so and I've always been happy...
I think they have a private back area, but not sure.
I have it on good word that it's "authentic" if that matters
Dinosaur, Hill Country or Daisy May's
Just went to Daisy Mays, terrific ribs and brisket
If I had it to do over again (and had one other person), I would share a plate and order extra sides - mac and cheese, collards, and creamed spinach are all great.
That said, I probably could have plowed through a whole other plate of ribs...
There was a party doing a pig pickin when I went, that looks like fun and worthwhile
Crispy Fried Whole Fish with Chili Sauce - UWS
I wound up at Land Thai, it was perfectly satisfactory. Nice cocktails too. Will check out the papaya salad next time (soon!)
Crispy Fried Whole Fish with Chili Sauce - UWS
thanks! i'm absolutely willing to leave, but this was on short notice and with a group of people after work... i will certainly investigate!
Crispy Fried Whole Fish with Chili Sauce - UWS
Where can I get good crispy fried whole fish in UWS? I have looked on a couple of menus of various vietnamese and malaysian restaurants without much luck. It is one of my all-time favorite things to eat, and I'd like to find it!
Thanks!!!
Daniel Review - Very Long, Very Sad
I agree completely. I went a couple of weeks ago and had the 3 course prix fixe. While certain elements of the meal were very, very good and the service was generally very nice, I left feeling somewhat less than impressed - certainly given the caliber of restaurant I expect in this price range.
I strongly second your problem with the foie gras terrine, it was mind boggling that they gave out so little bread...I didn't bother asking for more, I expected it to come.
All of my courses (and those of my party) were very well presented, but in some of the dishes the subtle flavor was too subtle - maybe it's a personal preference, but I like a little punch of flavor every now and then...
Finally, I have to say I am a little disappointed with their service to kids - we had a younger teenager with us and they only seemed somewhat willing to work with us, "sauce on the side" kind of thing. Again, for a restaurant of this caliber, I would expect at least a standard operating procedure for picky younger eaters...
Near Columbia Hospital, 168/Broadway
Tasty Deli on 169th and St Nicholas is really terrific... nice folks, too.
I like Parilla on 165th and Broadway, they have a 6.99 special grilled skirt steak w/ rice and beans...I think they have other options as well, but that was very good.
West Village - Cheap cheap cheap
the "mojito" at the hummus place is also terrific.
try the hot sauce with your meal too, it's really tasty!
Good French Bistro for Mussels and Frite
Can anyone recommend some good moules frites in east village?
The Redhead- A new favorite place
FWIW, I had dinner at the bar last night and had a terrific time...friendly crowd, nice bartenders, the food was terrific. It's been a while since I've had such a pleasant dining experience, honestly. I tried their version of the manhattan, I was real happy with it.
Recommended Mexican restaurants in Chapel Hill/Carrboro?
Reason #11,395 to hate the health department...
My favorite dish would be ruined by takeout, but I think most of their menu would be fine...looks like there will be a lot of diners eating in the parking lot now.

The whole fried tilapia is also really good!
Fresh seafood in Chapel Hill
Agreed, if he's talking to someone else about cooking I generally take note mentally and get whatever they are getting!
best carolina pulled pork in nyc?

Finer-Dining in Kingsport [TN]
Well, it wouldn't be a tragedy to go to both places. The drive to Troutdale, VA is very beautiful and there's a lot of great hiking around there.
That said, the restaurant is in Bristol, TN. Bristol exists in a strange limbo between VA and TN.

The website has directions, menus, etc
Good luck!
"Lantern" Restaurant's Salt and Pepper Shrimp Dish
I have to try these the next time I am in Chapel Hill, just out of curiosity! Anything new and good there? I'll be in town in a couple of weeks
Finer-Dining in Kingsport [TN]
It's been a couple of years since I've lived in Kingsport, but Troutdale has always been excellent - well worth the short drive. I hear from family that it has improved by leaps and bounds - according to the website it is a 5 star restaurant?
What do you love best about your neighborhood, food-wise?
Can you please give me the names and addresses of these wonderful places (in Washington Heights)?
Fresh seafood in Chapel Hill
Go next weekend - ask what's fresh, and advice on how to cook it. You won't be disappointed!
mexican in washington heights/harlem etc
As far as I know you are much more likely to find Dominican restaurants in the heights... It's pretty dramatically different than Mexican food in most respects.
