New Hot Pot Place on Anderson

Interesting location - it's the same shopping center where Alamo Drafthouse, Korea House, Madam Mam's and Cover 3 are located.

Stiles Switch BBQ

I went for lunch today with the Mrs. and concur completely with missmitzi - the brisket was great - tender, flavorful, wide smoke rings. The jalapeno sausage was really nice. Would just add that even the turkey was really nice - moist...must've been brined before smoking. Will definitely return.

Stiles Switch BBQ

They do have Austin Amber on tap so it's not quite as pitiful as described.

roll with me here: best egg roll in austin?

OMG I loved King Egg Roll they were amazing straight from the source

Fish Skin Fish Dumplings at Ivy's Deli; Xiao Long Bao (XLB) Too

It does sound exciting. Thanks for posting about it. I haven't noticed Ivy's before.

Searching Austin's best reuben sandwich

I'm under the impression, perhaps mistaken, that the HEB far west deli also use Boar's Head.

Gordon ruined El Greco. Can it be saved from the RIP thread?

But even after the show's taping the crew at El Greco is flailing...they apparently can't order enough chicken, cook lamb, or dress a lousy salad. Perhaps if they can figure out how to do some or all of those things, they'll have a fighting chance.

Gordon ruined El Greco. Can it be saved from the RIP thread?

At a certain point it's up to the restauranteur to execute some basic concepts. Some people seem to blame Gordon Ramsay for El Greco's problems. But your story seems to offer more of a description about the owners failing to get their act together.

Old Restaurants in Austin

Quality Seafood has been around since 1938 but I don't know how long they've been cooking to order.

Gordon's Bringing Kitchen Nightmares To Austin: Here's Who Needs His Help

You're misrepresenting facts and posting links to articles that don't say what you represent them to say. And once again, you are also changing the subject. The point has been your ridiculous claim that Gordon Ramsay is not particularly well-qualified to serve as a short-term coach to help turn around a failing restaurant.

If you had said what that you're not a fan of his, or that you don't like his tv show, we wouldn't be arguing. Instead what you're clearly doing is vilifying Gordon Ramsay.

Gordon's Bringing Kitchen Nightmares To Austin: Here's Who Needs His Help

If you're going to defend yourself the least you could do is to stick to the point. You wrote that you're not sure what qualifies Gordon Ramsay to turn around restaurants. The man operates many very well-regarded and successful restaurants around the world. Is there really anything more that need be said on the matter? You point to a couple lawsuits over one restaurant in NY as an effort to discredit the man. Before I was only being flippant. Now, however, I'm being contentious because I take exception to your continuing effort to vilify and discredit him.

How many Michelin stars do you have? I'm sure most restauranteurs (and prospectives) will be relieved to know just how easy it is!

Austin Texas Food Blogs

Should we mention http://www.scrumptiouschef.com/food ?

Misc. FWIW in the ASS

A food critic without any apparent qualification, I might add. I think they pulled him off the music and obituary beat...one or the other, anyway. But no matter. Fortunately for any restauranteur who might care what the AAS writes, he has a blog and a full face shot posted online so the chefs in town should have ample warning before he sits down to review their food.

FRIED CHICKEN IN AUSTIN??

I need to remember to check out Southern Hospitality!

Jasper's has fried chicken on their brunch menu. It's pricey but it is slow-cooked and good.

Hard Hat Report Vol 8

800 W. 6th Street (new bldg under construction for a tech company's HQ) will include restaurant space for (drumroll please) Restaurant Jezebel! Set to open Summer of 2012 per AAS. Jezebel will reportedly be just one of 3 Parind Vora concepts in the new building. http://www.austin360.com/food-drink/jezebel-2-other-restaurants-planned-for-new-building-1587822.html

My favorite things from Whole Foods (downtown)

You wrote Zeke's Smoked Hummus but maybe you meant Baby Zach's Smoked Hummus? Which is awesome, btw, for those who haven't tried. The Spicy Smoked BBQ Hummus is addictive. Also available at Wheatsville and sometimes the downtown Saturday farmers market.

Food Trucks in the Arboretum Area

Someone posted the schedule for the Google building a couple months ago. At the time, Short Subs Bus stopped there one day, and on another it was a korean/taco purveyor. If you search "google building" on this board I'll bet you find it. Perhaps your post will encourage someone who works there to update the schedule but at the time the trailers were there for lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Best store for Japanese?

Here's a 2nd for DK Sushi. Great place! I imagine if you tell DK what you want he'd have some great suggestions.

Blue Bell Ice Cream

The current issue of Cook's magazine has a recipe for homemade vanilla ice cream. They recommend corn syrup in place of sugar because they said it helped the ice cream stay creamier.

Franklin's Update

When I was last there about a month ago, the talk was that Aaron was going to increase smoking capacity by using the biggest metal box he could find - a metal storage container was on order. Anyone hear anything?

Carillon sitting at the bar

"I work in restaurants (who else goes for Alsace?)"

2B1, but I don't work in restaurants :)

I also think the food at Carillon is delicious. The place is comfortable but I get the library comparisons.

My favorite things from Central Market

I agree - I used to enjoy shopping at CM but then I got used to going to the newly rehabbed and expanded Wheatsville. I find it a much happier and relaxing place to shop. Plus the prices on many items, particularly organic fruit and veggies, are much better. They also carry a lot of locally made products that you won't find at CM.

Most people don't seem to realize that non-members can shop at Wheatsville too and the price they pay is the same as it is for members.

The Original New Orleans Po-Boy & Gumbo Shop?

I wish you'd all go try Mo-Joe's at Lincoln Village and report back...their po-boy was great IMO. Shrimp was perfect. Bread was wonderful. I had never heard of it until last week but it's apparently been there for awhile - I went for lunch and liked it a lot.

Fresh quail in Austin

I've seen them at Quality Seafood also - can't recall the price but very inexpensive and they're not always there. Last time I saw them there was a few weeks ago and I believe they were stuffed with crawfish meat. Definitely worth calling them.

French Quarter Cafe

Interesting...look forward to your report!

Gordon's Bringing Kitchen Nightmares To Austin: Here's Who Needs His Help

I think one of the main qualifications the show uses for choosing restaurants is that its fallen on hard times. Its not enough that the food isn't good. Most of the places named in this thread thus far would never be considered for that reason.

In-n-Out Burger is Coming to Texas!

aha, redemption! confirmation!

In-n-Out Burger is Coming to Texas!

Probably. There's something grating to me about posts that begin with "Meh" and go downhill from there.

In-n-Out Burger is Coming to Texas!

I hate to tell you this but if it's the perfect burger you're after, you need to go to NYC to a place in the Village called Minetta Tavern and order the Black Label Burger. Outrageously good.
