Am I crazy for thinking that Magnolia cupcakes suck?

I just posted about lousy chocolate cakes in nyc too, if there aren't any good cakes then how can there possibly good cupcakes ?!! The past twenty years baked goods are being made to look good to sell, flavor is unimportant. IF IT SELLS.... And all this crap does sell to the masses. Isn't that what it's about. For we few true foodies, our quest is endless and fun. Happy baking and seeking. And sharing..

have you already checked out cupcake cafe 39th and 9 .(I Haven;t been there for a good five years)

"best chocolate cake in the world"

"best chocolate cake in the world"

Again these shops make sweet , good looking things, that just do not taste anything close to my nanas..

"best chocolate cake in the world"

I have to say i never liked anything chocolate from Black Hound,(just looks good) They did make a great quasemarelli cookie.

nick & toni's -DISGRACEFUL

Dined there last evening. WHAT A JOKE. THIS IS A FAUX RESTAURANT by any standards. I won't even call their slop ..food....maybe they don;t even have a kitchen.!

With the exception of the bread, everything was poor quality.

The green salad we ordered especially had ONE piece of arugula in it,

Next the $17.00 "pizzette" arrived looking like dog food that was lying around for days. The baby beets had no taste at all..

Dessert "vanilla gelato with chocolate and expresso" was so ugly I didn't wan't to taste it! And the PRETEND French Press coffee, was not pressed at all and was clearly the worst coffee in NYC.

True to form, the staff was belligerent.

I wrote a letter off to the owner. She just may be as appalled, we'll see.

The place is usually crowded, which makes me think many people drink too much vino.

"best chocolate cake in the world"

just opened on 83rd and Madison. are they kidding? it is not cake, and does not even taste like chocolate. mousse cake maybe, and then, far from the best.
Quaint digs . too bad. I crave chocolate cake.
(thanks to my nana for her cake). NYC does not have a decent dark tasting chocolate cake . (okay Maison du Chocolate),most I've had are bland with little chocolate flavor, too sweet, or chocolate chips to boost it.
A shop called Taylors, made an exquisite brownie. They closed years ago, Anybody know of it?
Somebody please help me find a real chocolate cake, not mousse, not flourless.

powdered buttermilk vs. real thing

I never seem to have buttermilk around when I need it, so I bought some powdered style, very convenient.

I used it in biscuits and with no profound difference. The biscuits were delish. Though they didn't rise as much as I would have liked, I don't think this had anything to do with the buttermilk powder . Looking for some other experiences with powdered vs. liquid.

Pain au chocolat

try Soutines on west 70st.
IT TRUELY SMELLS LIKE A FRENCH BAKERY!!

Top 10 Bakeries in the 5 Boros? [moved from What's My Craving?]

maison du choclate on 80 & madison, the finest chocolatier bar none in nyc had many extremely well done chocolate pastries, cakes and cookies.
Venieros is a patiserrie on 11st and first ave. Huge variety of attractive, delicious Italian pastries, cookies, pies, cakes. Not ultimate quality but fair priced and cafe is open late..(do not go on weekends).
