Best Supermarket In USA: your nominations

Sorry don't think it is right to ask people to nominate the best supermarket and then ask them to leave certain ones out, so I am going to nominate the Whole Foods in Fairlakes. They have a lot of great venues that you don't see anywhere else. They have a seafood restaurant where a band plays on Saturday, a smokehouse that has every kind of smoke meat that you would want and a sports bar, yes bar, that has like 20 flat screen tvs that show every nfl game on Sunday and college football on Saturday. They also have great beers on tap and do growler fills.

Stores that sell Bison/Buffalo steaks?

what whole foods are you going to...i tend to visit a lot of them depending on whether i am on the road for work or shopping and i have seen buffalo there all the time.

What is your favorite DC foodie restaurant?

I can't say enough about Dino in Cleveland Park...You will find authentic Italian dishes that you won't find anywhere else. Great use of local farms, great cheeses and great wines. Dino does it right.

Fresh Turmeric Root

As of yesterday, they have them at the Whole Foods in Old Town.

Cacio e Pepe Pasta

P.S.....

If you can find it, Sini Fulvi Pecorino Romano is still made in the countryside near Rome and not in Sardinia.

Cacio e Pepe Pasta

I have to disagree with the poster who puts oil in the salted water when boiling. This does nothing for the taste and actually makes the noodle too slick for the sauce to stick to. Oil should only be added after draining and saucing. Also, with the sauce, it is not wise to rinse the pasta either after draining (with any sauce for that matter) as rinsing it washes away the starch that allows the sauce to stick to the pasta.

Difference btwn marinara/bolognese/meat sauce

these posts are right on...a good bolognese should have a consistency somewhere in the neighborhood of a thick stew.

Rye whiskey making a come back? [moved from the Boston board]

Try Templeton Rye...Al Capone's whiskey of choice. You got a problem with that? (hahaha) Seriously, it's good stuff.

Where to find Fage Yoghurt

Ah...I think I see, we were getting into the semantics I think, you must mean the "natural" section (different from organic) at Wegmans.

Where to find Fage Yoghurt

I am not being persnickety, but I don't know why it would be in the organic section as it is not organic.

Where to find Fage Yoghurt

it is definitely at the Whole Foods on Duke St. I just bought some there last night in fact. They have the regular, 2% and fat-free. Maybe they were just out when you were there.

Is there such a thing as an upscale Ethiopian restaurant?

If you are ever in Washington, DC try Zed's. Food is good, not divey at all, and I would consider it more upscale without the "upscale" prices....

Williams Sonoma Return Policy on Food [moved from General Topics]

I work part time at WS.....and the way you were treated was wrong. First of all, the associate should not have argued with you. Secondly, that person would NEVER have been fired for taking a product back. Maybe I work at a really good one, but we have been instructed via our store manager and our Regional Director to do whatever it takes to make the customer leave happy. This has ranged from taking back everything and anything that has been returned (like items that were years old and pans that have clearly been abused) to calling other stores like Sur La Table when we don't carry or don't have an item a customer needs. I can remember a story I was told when I was hired about an associate who once gave a customer a hard time about a return concerning a toaster. She had went out to dinner one night with Chuck Williams and the CEO Howard Lester and they pretty much told her that it is silly to lose a customer over a toaster. Bottom line, you were right, the employee was wrong.

What is authentic Italian cuisine where you are...

If you want some "authentic" Italian dishes, turn to (believe it or not) Jamie Oliver's Italy cookbook or Lidia's Italy to give you a good idea of what dishes would be considered authentic.

Truffle Salt

Are you serious? There is a Wegmans by me that sells black truffles for around $500 a pound. By doing what you are suggesting could cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $125, nevermind the fact that someone could make a mistake during the air drying process and ruin the truffle.

Plus the New York Times made it sound like a good alternative despite the "essence." Either way, this brand has not been reviewed in this thread, but I think the people who have reviewed so far have had good success with their truffle salt.

Truffle Salt

My wife and I first bought a jar of the Casina Rossa truffle salt on our honeymoon in Italy a few year ago. It is great on a lot of things, eggs, risotto, pasta.

They are now selling this brand at Williams Sonoma for around $30. I might pick up a jar when we our done with our current one.

How to store coffee [Moved from Home Cooking board]

Thanks for the tips, but may I ask why glass and not plastic? I am very curious, as I currently am storing my coffee beans in plastic containers, but will change if that is no good for the beans.

Cheap authentic Italian?

At best Il Raddichio can be considered somewhat authentic Italian, but Listrani's is definitely an Italian-American red sauce joint. For truly authentic Italian, I think you will have to move up a little from cheap, to moderately priced and for that you can't beat Dino in Clevland Park with Bebo Trattoria in Crystal City coming in second.

Parmigiano Reggiano

aged cheeses such as a parmigiano are no problem, especially when vacuum sealed. my wife recently brought back a ton of cheese from italy....no issue at all....try bring any meat back however, that is a whole 'nother issue...someone is enjoying my wild boar salami right now, but it is not me.
