chocolate peanut butter cake

I just made a peanut butter cake with vanilla pastry cream filling and chocolate frosting. It was amazingly delicious -- one of my roommates said it was the most delicious dessert she'd ever had!

Celebrating final year of 20's with scotch

I want to give my boyfriend a bottle of scotch for his birthday and I'm looking to spend around $60-70. I know he likes Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphraoig, and I'm wondering if I should get him something in that vein or get him something new to try (maybe something less peaty)? I've only just begun to get into scotch but I can already tell that it's incredibly subjective...and incredibly confusing, so any help is greatly appreciated!

Mock Meats in LA?

Green Leaves on Hillhurst has soy fish and yummy "chicken" nuggets
Truly Vegan on Hollywood has amazing "chicken" and pancakes
Vegan Glory on Beverly
These places are all pretty similar, they have thai dishes as well as wraps and burgers

"Wrapped" appetizer ideas

Going to a party this weekend and the host has requested we bring an appetizer that's "wrapped". I'm thinking a bunch of people will go the "wrap anything you can find in bacon" route, and I'm not particularly fond of the melon/prosciutto combo so I'm looking for other ideas. Any thoughts?

Turkish manti

Some of the Armenian groceries on Washington in Pasadena have frozen manti--it's pretty good and easy to prepare. I've never seen manti in a restaurant though.

Fuul (aka fuul medammis, fu'ul mudammes, ful m'dammis) recipes?

My grandfather used to make them for breakfast all the time, and all he added to the beans was olive oil, lemon juice and cumin. While it was cooking, he would mash the beans up a bit with a wooden spoon--this would thicken it up a bit.

Alex Di Peppe's Italian Restaurant, Arcadia

I've been there a few times. The Tabasco chicken is really good! I remember the portions being huge and the prices were pretty reasonable. It's a nice little place, definitely worth a try!

BIGG CHILL on Westwood now competing with PINKBERRY!

I tried it last night. It is more like soft-serve, more creamy than icy. It's pretty good, but it's missing whatever it is that makes pinkberry so addictive (crack?)

There's a new PB imposter at the Century City foodcourt called Bear Naked Yogurt. Theirs seemed more icy but less sweet than PB.

Salep - middle eastern orchid root...

Try one of the Armenian groceries on Washington Blvd. in Pasadena. I've never asked for salep, but I've found mahleb and mastic, so I think they might have salep as well.
