Pasadena food lovers

Houston's is a really good, higher end chain restaurant. Very good dinner and lunch selections, no corkage fee when you BYOW, and a well-trained wait staff. Best veggie burger in town too.

Where should I become acquainted with cheese and charcuterie?

If you're at all near the Pasadena/La Canada area I'd highly recommend a new place on Foothill Blvd in the heart of La Canada called Anthony's. He's got a wonderful selection of Spanish and Italian and French Charcuterie and takes the time to explain all the meats and cheeses and to supply samples. The cost is beyond reasonable and you can get it all as take out or sit in his very comfortable restaurant and enjoy it all with some great wines by the glass.

Where can I find great CHEESE DANISH in LA?

I was blown away by the Danish that Rockenwaganer's sells at the La Canada Farmers Mkt. I'm sure Hans sells them at his Venice bakery as well.

Most Divisive Restaurants?

Agreed, but MF's is so much more about it's place in Hollywood history than it is about the food. I mean who really orders Welsh Rarebit anymore. But the scene in the bar room is like going back in time. When I moved here in 1980 my prospective employer took a couple of us out to dinner there and sitting at the 6 top next to us was Paul Simon, Rob Reiner, Lorne Michaels, Penny Marshall and Laraine Newman enjoying cosmos and martinis. God this was my introduction to LA! Ages before that F. Scott Fitzgerald was trysting with Sheila Graham in the grill room. If it hasn't kept up with modern culinary preferences, who cares? That's really not why most people go there. It's a page from LA's past than never ceases to satisfy. Foodies can keep their distance.

La Cabiita Chicken Soup

So I'm trying to recreate La Cabinita's wonderful chicken soup substituting leftover turkey for the chicken. I know it has rice and it's all topped off with avocado and cilantro, but I can't remember what other veggies are in it other than half ears of corn. Can any CHers help complete the veggie list?

fresh turkeys for thanksgiving?

Harmony Farms in La Crescenta always has great free range birds, but you need to reserve them.

Happy Hour in Montrose?

The Dish on Foothill Blvd. in La Canada has half priced well drinks, beers and wines from 3PM 'til 6PM Monday thru Friday.

Sand Dabs - who serves 'em

Musso Frank has always had what I consider the classic California Sand dab. But that's probably because it's the first place I ever ate them after moving here to LA in 1980.

Graeter's Ice Cream on the west coast

According to a report in the WSJ a couple of months ago, Graeter's was expanding its manufacturing capability without sacrificing it's high quality standards. Their small batch "French Pot" method made them legendary among ice cream snobs. Since Ralphs is a part of Krogers, another Cincy company, it makes sense that that's where you found it. As a former Cincinnatian this is great news!

beer gardens

Can anyone tell me if there are any good German-style beer gardens in or near the Glendale/Pasadena area. A place with nice outdoor seating, good beer selections and decent food? Ooom-Pah-Pah bands not necessary. But good sausages ala Brat Brothers would be great.

DR. HOGLY WOGLY FAVS

Thanks everyone. I think I'll start with the brisket and the links and then then just work my way through the menu.

DR. HOGLY WOGLY FAVS

Just landed a job within five minutes of this place. I know it's respected by CH-ers so I'd really appreciate hearing what some of your favorite menu items are.

Smoke House in Burbank

George Clooney became a star during his days on ER. He and his fellow cast members ate many a meal at the Smokehouse, as it was right across the street from Warner Brothers Studios. Later, When Clooney formed his own production company, he named it Smokehouse Productions. If it was good enough for George Clooney, it's good enough for me.

Craig's on Melrose

I don't think they've officially opened. From what I understand he's only inviting good friends and favorite Dan Tana customers for soft openings.

Knife Sharpening - SGV/LB/LA/OC

Sur La Table is OK but they're just going to run them through an electric grinder with fixed angles. The best place IMO to take knives if you're not comfortable sharpening them yourself is Ross Cutlery. They're downtown in the historic Bradbury Bldg on Broadway. SLT will cost you a dollar an inch, Ross will cost you more, but they're worth it.

Thinking about replacing my 10" Shun Chefs.

Not so. The Classic line of Wusthof is also sharpened to the Asian angle. I sell them.

Thinking about replacing my 10" Shun Chefs.

I think its hard to beat the Wusthof 10" chef's knife. They're now sharpened to the same angle as Asian knives and IMO their heft does a lot of the work for you.

the Buggy Whip

For the past few years, when my kids would return to Los Angeles from college for Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays, it fell on me to pick them up from the airport. Rather than face the horrific prospect of cruising endlessly around the LAX loop and trying to dodge determined airport police, I wised up. I told my kids that if they took a taxi to the Buggy Whip, I'd reimburse them. The place was everything WildSwede and AAGjr said and during the holidays a whole lot more. Maybe it was the festive mood at the bar combined with reuniting with my kids, but I have nothing but the fondest of memories for that place. Reading all these comments and knowing that I've made the last of my college holiday LAX runs, I'm saddened just a bit. I think a return trip to the Buggy Whip is in order later this year just for old times sake.

GREAT GERMAN DELI

Just started working a job in Van Nuys in the shadow of the giant Budweiser Beer plant and discovered a wonderful sandwich place on Roscoe near Woodley. It's called Van Nuys German Deli and they have a great selection of cold cuts. More types of head cheese than even Schriners! The owner told me he's been in business for forty years now. Best of all, they have big fresh Bavarian soft pretzels. They are every bit as good as the ones Hans Rockenwagner sells, although not quite as big. This place makes really good sandwiches for very reasonable prices; all between $6.50 and $8.50. It's a little bit of lunch heaven in an otherwise bleak culinary neighborhood.

Coconut Cream Pie- Los Angeles

At the risk of sounding totally pedestrian, Marie Calendars makes an awesome coconut cream pie.

GOOD DEALS NEAR THE STANFORD COURT HOTEL

I'm staying at the Stanford Court this Friday and Saturday and have $40.00 budget for dinner each night. Wondering what's close by that's really good. I like all cuisines but would rather not go Mexican as I get a lot of that at home in LA. Thanks!

pretzel bread & burger buns near Echo Park/Silver Lake

If La Canada isn't too far out of your way, Hans Rokenwagner has a booth at the Saturday farmers market from 7:00 'til 2:00PM. They sell pretzels, pretzel baguettes, and pretzel rolls and buns,

XXXL TURKEY

That is a consideration Baron and it's my default position if I don't find a 26 pounder or so.

Thanks for the heads up RichardM, I have a roaster that can handle a big bird and plenty of help getting it in and out of the oven if needed.

XXXL TURKEY

I'll check them flylice, thanks!

XXXL TURKEY

Looking for Hound advice to help locate a ginormous size gobbler. I'm talking 28 - 30 pounds. I'm in the La Canada/Pasadena area so local is better. Preferably fresh, but frozen in OK...just need to start the thawing process ASAP. Thanks all.

BEST BET FOR CHINESE NEAR BOOME AND FORSYTHE

My daughter just moved to Manhattan from Los Angeles and is renting an apartment near the corner of Broome St. and Forsythe. Seems to be where Lower East Side meets Chinatown. I'm wondering if any of you Manhattan hounds would be kind enough to recommend what you believe to be the best within a reasonable (6 to 8 block) radius. We love all types of Chinese. Mandarin, Shanghai, Hunan, etc. Thanks for your help here.

BEST REASONABLY PRICED OYSTERS

Thanks WM ! This definitely sounds worth a crosstown drive.

Best Fennel Sausage in Los Angeles or online

The Italian with fennel at Monte Carlo on Magnolia in Burbank is pretty darn good IMO, but not quite up to the standards of that at Mozza.

BEST REASONABLY PRICED OYSTERS

Had a plate of a dozen mixed oysters at Morel's in the Grove yesterday. They were terrific! But they should be when you pay $36 for them. Any recommendations for places that serve nice briny bivalves in the general vicinity of Pasadena/La Canada/Glendale at a price south of two bucks apiece?

cheese store of pasadena open

Sounds like a great addition to the Pasadena fine food scene. Did you by chance notice if they sold Cow Girl cheeses? I was just up in Tamales and tried a number of their soft and semi-soft cheeses. Great quality! If not sold at CSP, anyone know where to buy the brand somewhere near Pasadena?
