Little Sheep Mongolian Hot Pot now open in the TL. [San Francisco]

definitely union square, not tenderloin. too bad it closes at 11:30 on weekends (i think). prime opportunity missed for late-night dining by being across from two late-night clubs that attract a significant asian crowd. i guess there's still katanaya (and jack in the box/pinecrest for post-2am)

you go away for a week, and the food you miss most is....

the point is, there are only about 5 or 6 above average thai restaurants in all of san francisco - it's not like you can pick a thai restaurant at random and end up with amazing results as one could in LA's thai town.

though if we're talking thai restaurants in the tnederloin, i'd have to add sai jai thai - the menu isn't as comprehensive as lers ros, but they do many dishes just as well, and for cheaper with shorter lines.

authentic chinese restaurant with good ambience for a first date? [San Francisco]

i think a divey restaurant is perfectly fine for later dates down teh line. it's more along the lines of when you have two people who are still trying to get to know each other, you want minimal distractions/interruptions/awkwardness

i liked made in china's food quite a lot, but the service is a little awkward, and there is very little english spoken

High-end Sichuan opening in Pleasanton

thanks all. i think i'm going to do terra cotta warrior - she really likes authentic chinese food, and was hoping to go to one of the less popular, more undiscovered places.

that being said, i think i'm going to save it for 2nd date.

authentic chinese restaurant with good ambience for a first date? [San Francisco]

as much as i love kingdom of dumpling, it's not quite what i'm looking for. have heard really good things about house of pancakes, and pictures look somewhat promising.

am still looking for a more out of the way/less popular place (i realize R&G fits the bill, but also not quite what i'm looking for).

maybe grand hotpot lounge?

Made in China Restaurant - San Bruno, and maybe opening in SF?

went with a big group last night and ordered a lot of food. all-around good, with some great. no duds.

trying to recall from memory:

fish head with chiles: excellent, almost as good as what i had in china.

dry fried green beans: this isn't the type of dish that will ever blow you away, but it was quite good.

lamb skewers: pretty good, could have used more seasoning

"griddle lamb belly": one of my favorite dishes. hard to describe, but quite tasty

griddled frog: quite good, and also a new dish for me. seasonings were good.

whole fish: one of hte standouts of the night. fish was impeccably fresh, and not flavored with much more than cilantro, garlic, and ginger.

scrambled eggs with peppers: very much a homestyle dish, very good.

leek stirfry: good.

enoki mushroom skewers: different. good, but i always forget how weird the texture of enoki is.

squid skewers: had never had this before; no real basis of comparison. not sure if i'd order again.

beijing yogurt: was excited about this, but wasn't all that great; likely purchased at the safeway across the street.

while they have a dedicated hunan section, this is definitely more pan-chinese. menu is enormous; will be curious to see how long they can maintain quality.

restaurant was about half-full, all chinese families.

agree. long-time devotee of blue bottle coffee, even longer devotee of dunkin donuts coffee. loving the two isn't incompatible.

Arabian Nights + Pakistani Rec (SF)

the meats there are quite good.

as mentioned earlier, arabian nights is lebanese, whereas old jerusalem is palestinian; which, though similar, mean that differences between the two could also be a matter of personal preference.

Pharaohs Mediterranean Sandwich [Tenderloin, San Francisco]

it's been open for quite a while. went a while back and thought it was tasty, nothing too incredible. a nice change of pace from the mediocre pizza place next door for drunken eats

Dine about town menu?

went to one market for dine abotu town yesterday. excellent food and excellent value, as always.

choice of carrot ginger soup or little gem/green goddess salad for appetizer.

choice of true cod or pot roast for main.

optional mini dessert of blueberry cobbler or chocolate pot de creme for $4.

between the four of us, we had everything, and it was all delicious.

Maneelap Srimongkoun Restaurant -- New Lao Food Option in the Excelsior [San Francisco]

went here last night. far better than champa garden (which i also enjoy). we stuck to the lao part of the menu (scroll down to the bottom: http://www.seamless.com/food-delivery...), though some of the thai dishes sounded intriguing, and it was definitely a more carefully chosen menu than your average thai restuarant.

we got the tum tang salad (cucumber salad with crab - similar to a papaya salad with crab), sai ooa (homemade sausage), nam kao tod, kao piak noodles (kind of like a chicken noodle soup with homemade udon), and the num tok (grilled marinated pork with rice powder and other ingredients).

all of the dishes were superb (as was the thai iced tea). we even got another order of sausage because it was so good. they were also more than happy to make it authentically spicy too.

as others have noted, it was sadly not too full when we went; the remote location definitely has something to do with it. there were a few other thai/lao families there. definitely a place people should support - would be a real loss if they didn't get enough business to sustain themselves.

NEW: Chino in the Mission, SF - Menu has XLB & open daily until 1AM, any reports yet?

i make dope-ass creme brulee - nothing wrong with that. also, if you look at the menu from tacolicious - it goes with the theme - they like witty/edgy

Birthday dinner in SF for 18 year old

not that it's necessarily a huge drawback, but part of the appeal at house of prime rib is the giant martinis served with the shaker glasses - if you do a birthday dinner in SF every year, house of prime rib might be better for a 21st birthday (orrrrrrr if your son can pass for 21, you can have him order one anyway and hope the server assumes that no responsible parent would ever let their son drink underage at such a classy establishment :-p)

totally different industry, but the recent fiasco involving all the people who helped kickstart Oculus only to see them not get any of the $2B from the facebook acquisition has increased demand for such a site

discounted baked goods later in the day?

have seen a couple places around town, mostly coffeeshops and bakeries, that will discount unsold baked goods later in the day (usually after 3pm or so) that they'd otherwise throw away, but i'm blanking out on them now, and was hoping to remember some of them as i just started a new job in the financial district and was hoping to find an outlet for late afternoon snacking desires.
