Birthday dinner in SF for 18 year old

not that it's necessarily a huge drawback, but part of the appeal at house of prime rib is the giant martinis served with the shaker glasses - if you do a birthday dinner in SF every year, house of prime rib might be better for a 21st birthday (orrrrrrr if your son can pass for 21, you can have him order one anyway and hope the server assumes that no responsible parent would ever let their son drink underage at such a classy establishment :-p)

totally different industry, but the recent fiasco involving all the people who helped kickstart Oculus only to see them not get any of the $2B from the facebook acquisition has increased demand for such a site

Chocolatier Blue new shop on Valencia St, SF - ice cream, sorbets, brownies, hot chocolate, chocolates - any reports?

went there the other day; pretty much identical to their other locations

discounted baked goods later in the day?

have seen a couple places around town, mostly coffeeshops and bakeries, that will discount unsold baked goods later in the day (usually after 3pm or so) that they'd otherwise throw away, but i'm blanking out on them now, and was hoping to remember some of them as i just started a new job in the financial district and was hoping to find an outlet for late afternoon snacking desires.

Henry's Hunan

bumping this thread. looking at yelp, the ratings seem to vary wildly by location. was thinking of going to the one on sansome tomorrow for lunch, but it's the lowest rated henry's hunan in SF. i realize that yelp reviews aren't everything though (especially with chinese restaurants); is there anyone who's been to this location recently?

Is it true that SF restaurants barely make profits?

sorry to change the discussion a bit, but would be curious to know about the profitability of bars (i.e. places that only serve alcohol, no food). would assume that they would generally be more profitable, since there are far less labor costs, ingredient costs, etc., but this is something i know very little about. and how do dive bars compare to fancier cocktail places? would assume that the latter would be more profitable since you can do higher markups on drinks, but they also probably need to pay the staff more, and stock more expensive liquors. again, i could be way off base on all of this, but am just curious to know since we're already discussing profitability.

Upscale yet delicious brunch places in San Francisco??

if you don't mind showing up at 10:45, it's also generally easy to get one of the 11am walk-in tables

gallardo's or san jalisco. note that the word is out about both of them and now attract long brunch lines on weekends. gallardo's also has a new location.

reaction restaurant for mexico city street food. vallarta for tacos.

The pizza shop (24th St., Mission) [San Francisco]

went here last night. this place is indeed legit.

that being said, going here last night (and i think robert has made this point on this board before, could be wrong), it reminded me that even the best new-york style pizza is not going to be mind-blowing.

part of the appeal of this pizza in new york is the price point, the numerous $1/slice shops that do it better than almost any of the places here that charge more.

but at $6 for two cheese slices (or $7/$8 if getting one or two slices with toppings), there's far better ways i'd rather spend that money in SF, especially in the mission. a huge super carne asada burrito from taqueria cancun costs about the same and is immensely more satisfying. or an entree at yamo. or splitting an $18 deep dish pizza at little star with two friends. or two bahn mis in little saigon. or 3 tacos at vallarta.

alas, i digress. if i'm craving NY-style pizza, as i do from time to time, i will certainly go here. but i just can't imagine this becoming a go-to place with so many more satisfying cheap eats.

dr. teeth; though might want to do some research on when they're 21+ only.

all sorts of fun, creative, tasty, junk food. not gourmet by any stretch but will satisfy anyone, as long as they're not health freaks.

restaurants that allow pre-pay for group dinners?

that's what i'm looking for, but not quite in the price range of the slanted door, and while this thread has been very helpful so far, was hoping for people being able to share experiences (good or bad) with specific restaurants that have handled this before.

for drinks, i think i'll just tell people to order from the bar.

jfk layover

Apologies if this has already been posted, but i'm on my phone and too hard to search. Have a 3 hour layover from 5am to 8am at jfk tomorrow. i'm coming from san francisco. using only public transit, is there anything open that time (anywhere in nyc) that'd be worth going to, and would get me back by 7am, or is it just not worth it? love all good food, pastries, desserts, drinks, coffee, etc...

Guddu de Karahi Opening Oct 15 [SF]

i haven't been to sunrise in a while, so maybe it's gone downhill.

while baking their own pita would be nice, i'm not going to hold it against palmyra. i like palmyra because it's the only actual syrian restaurant in SF (vs. most other places being either palestinian or lebanese), and my family is half-syrian, so it tastes like what i grew up with. it's home-cooking. my grandmother or great-grandmother didn't bake their own bread either (on that note, i've heard their falafel isn't great, but falafel isn't really home-cooking either, so that doesn't surprise me). they took over a former small casual burger place, so it's not like they can just throw in a bread oven.

it took me a while to get past the kitschy name/decor at arabian nights, but once you do, it's quite excellent. prices are a bit high, but ambience is nice.

false; while i wouldnt' say SF has amazing middle eastern food per se, arabian nights and palmyra are both as good as, if not better than old jerusalem (on certain items). and while it's a bit more casual, sunrise deli is still excellent, albeit more of a limited menu.

sadly, the hookah ban also resulted in us losing two deliciosu middle esatern restaurants; kan zaman and ziryab (the latter is technically still around, but it's gone more upscale, and from what i've heard, is not as good).

Kin Khao - Thai-style Thai in SF

soft opening was wed/thurs, real opening was last night.

i went.

as others have noted, it's hard to find, as the entrance isn't really on cyril magnum.

the flavor profiles are spot-on. no concessions here to american palates (not that i'm surprised). that being said, that would seem to be out of place at a hotel restaurant in a touristy area, as i can't imagine many tourists/hotel guests are looking for that type of stuff.

what is not spot-on is the pricing/portions. we got a caramelized pork belly dish for $16 which was absolutely incredible, but it consisted of five tiny one-inch squares. same with the octopus dish, very meager portion for $16 or $18 (the menu on the website is different from what we had last night). was perfectly cooked and spicy though. also got an excellent vegetable curry, which was a bit more adequately portioned for the $18 pricing.

to be fair, every table gets complimentary jasmine rice (which is really good), which is probably built into the pricing a bit, but it's still quite a bit off - this probably has something to do with the high-rent location.

dessert was a black rice pudding, which was excellent.

cocktails were good, though the iced coffee (non-alcoholic) was a bit water-y.

i realize it was their first night and that they'll probably be playing around a lot with pricing/portions in the next few weeks, so i'm sure i'll be back, as this really is some of the most exciting thai cooking going on anywhere. at this point though, it'd be cheaper to BART to and eat at hawker fare in oakland, and i'd be more full.

Himalayan Flavors replaces Pomegranate in Berkeley

i'm about to quit my job in berkeley for a job in SF, and i've been meaning to check this out for a while. can't believe i've been missing out on this for so long.

what a gem of a place. they have the standard indian dishes, and also nepalese dishes, but where this place really shines is the bhutanese/tibetan dishes in the "regional "section" of the menu.

http://www.himalayanflavors.com/image...

i had #30, the jasha maroo, chicken cooked in garlic/tomato/ginger sauce served over brown rice. they tried to dissuade me from ordering spicy, but i told them i wanted it prepared how they would in the himalayas, and they certainly brought the spice. was here by myself and not ravenous, so i didn't get anything else, but i'd love to come back here and get a group to try all of the regional dishes.

not sure if business is good though, there was only one other group of people eating at noon on a friday. it's not the best location either - lots of car traffic, but very little foot traffic outside of the hotel guests. hope this place stays around.
