Pat's or Geno's for cheesesteak?
What you were not GETTING was noone was steering you away from something...you had already made up your mind anyway.
The EXPERIENCE is not a GOOD...AUTHENTIC cheesesteak..it was the physicla attraction and visitation of going to pats and genos specifically like you saw on tv or read about....not the less descript locations that have AWESOME cheesesteaks that might have made you TEAR inot them in the cab or before....
WHICH I might add was a major mistake at least for the provolone...by the time you got back to the room the conjealed prov was NOT as good as it was 15 minutes at least earlier...P & G DEF. meant to eaten right there best.....NO steak is as good taken away...bend bite nad drip...no matter where you are...or sit and drip....
If I come to NY I don't want you to send me to Taco Bell...hook me up with a REAL mexican/Latin joint....no glitz...No neon...no board walk if needed jsut the best slice of pizza...
I don't care..I know what to eat...
Pat's or Geno's for cheesesteak?
I love the origianl post says don't tell us to go elsewhere...but they don't know where to go.....
I still can't figure out and how a Philadlephian eats Pat's or Geno's!!!
Imean, it's better than a steak you get at a diner or (well maybe not) or in a high school cafeteria..but
PAT'S and GENO'S SUCKS!!!!
worst in the city....
BIGGEST HYPE in the world.....
if you have to eat the big boys Tony Lukes is the big name to eat and at that his steaks have gottne that mass produced kinda edge but they are still real steaks...
the whole WHIZ crap is....crap....you might LIKE it..and that is COOL...but a standarad cheesesteak from one of the 8,00 places you can get one is American!!!!
bottom line.....
I SOO want to pull the plug on these dumb ass tv shows and celebrities throwin' P&G and Cheese Whiz up as a Cheesesteak...
Tony Lukes does the soecial with raab and sharp--good...and the pork sandwich is good...
HOWEVER -
HAving been to most neighborhoods and had more than my share of cheesesteaks.....HANDS DOWN...
CHINKS has the BEST still to this day....Chinks is on Torresdale Ave in the northeast...Wissinoming.....THE BEST...really...no reason to claim this other than the truth....
I moved away from the area na dfound Pudges in Blue Bell area...they are good...the next best thing..pretty damn good sandwiches....worht driving if your only other choice is crap's or crapo's wit whiz and you GOTTA speak in english (yeah, casue I hear soooo many people coming up and yelling foreign languages at the window trying to order a steak....even though I agree everyone that wants to LIVE here should learn the language) -

Say no to Whiz, Pats' & Geno's....
BBQ in Philadelphia area
er...um...got it! I was just referring to mentioning it's appeal...
I go to MANY places of WAY inferior quality because of flow.
but for me....Dave's also doesn't make the list of bad/junk/crappy food - guilty pleasures....
the kind you at times question your decision RIGHT after eating it....
But hitting up Holy Smoke real fast - and still dreaming of slightly tomatoey-vinegar sauce and yella sauce on moist, tender smokey filled ribs with just a little seasoning......
BBQ in Philadelphia area
First I have heard of Holy Smoke and Now I am piffed they are closed on Mondays as I was gittin' to get messy. I always have an open mind when trying a place.
Being from Philly, but having spent time down the coast and in Florida I have had more than my share of real Q in a few places....and am dreaming think of the "yella sauce" hollyd speaks of even.
When My wife and I first moved back from Florida - we started hitting up all the Q joints in town in all the neighborhoods - Rons, Dwights, Rib Crib - (please don't mention bones -streamed/boiled and grilled stuff) -
The smoked Joint wasn't BAD - but EVERYTHING was overly seasoned all the time. It just seamed clearly done by someone that like it but didn't KNOW it.
People have ok stuff but nothing like I have had before.....worst thing about the Rob Crib is if you have any sensitivity to MSG - DONE...
I was a judge at the first BBQ contest they had in between the vet and CB Park - a lot of people had really great BBQ!
Sweet Lucy's was there and it was pretty decent stuff. I have been going to them since they had a little truck in that parking ever since.
It, to me, is the best and closest thing around to the real deal....while I still can't find that true taste in my mind that I remember - they beat out any one else.
NOW- since they have hit popularity - I must say I agree...customer service is more like ordering a cheesesteak these days....
the quantities they are producing ARE affecting the over flavor they produce....corners are being cut since the old days of the truck...less time in the smoke...less moisture...less hands on from Jim and his wife and more time witht other help that doesn't have the heart in the Q....
at least in the south...even when the owners not there the help lives and knows the Q so they know how to treat it....let's face it...what do we know in Northeast Philly about showing some pig some smokey love?
I still go because there is nothing else around like it....if someone else can do better then I'd say they have a run...
Sure hope this Holy Smoke is damned good cause since i moved it's closer...AND the have Victory!
Wait did I see Famous Dave's mentioned in the same sentence as appeal? hhmmm
Rave for Tartes Bakery in Old City Philadelphia
Tartes is the best. Theresa, the owner/ Pastry Chef is really a lovely woman and running the place by herself mostly I can see how you think customer focus is not her main priority. But hey, this is Philly. I take this as her charm. She is in the middle of pumping out production for the window, for restaurants and for parties. It's 1/4 the attitude you get from ordering a steak wit or wit out the incorrect way and no sign designatin' the proppa language to do so in.
The Coconut Cream Tart & The banana Cream Tart are indeed incredible...inconsistent crust? too thick..the crust is so good and she always has so much of the good stuff I couldn't say...and my glutinous nature doesn't always give time to give crap. They are just the good. You also hit it in the Spice cookie but her true gem is in her cakes.
She did the cake for my wedding, and I was not sure what to expect. Sitting down with her she was so wonderful for the 2 of us - and she made a rolled fondant that was actually edible...not just this thick slab you can build a house with. Butter cream well....PLENTY of real butter. I am NOT a cake person, but for 12 months I keep asking my wife was it time to bust out the top and dig in.....we ate leftover cake and I tell you - no offense to anyone else's wedding I went to ...HANDS DOWN I never tasted a better wedding cake EVER.....it might not have been the biggest...but pretty, sharp and simple but I'd buy at a restaurant....
thinking now....we should have froze more...
She made minis for us as well and I bought minis from her for functions at work - HUGE HIT....she's a talent....
bakeries are hot - take some attitude - the tartes are sweet enough....or eat some mass produced crap and leave me with secret....
