cross country trip need recs esp from Memphis TN to Albuquerque NM

Since your going to be in Amarillo, there is a great little french bakery, Frank's Bakery, on Western just one block north of I-40. They serve breakfast and lunch and pastries and breads to take out. Have fun at Big Texan, it is just not someplace I would stop myself.

Best Restaurant Not in a Major Texas City - Texas

I can recommend Clark's Outpost in Tioga. Very good bbq. This place was recommended to me by a fellow judge Saturday when we were judging bbq at the Sam's Club BBQ Challenge.

I wasn't blown away by the competition bbq. Mostly it was just average.

A week eating BBQ around IHOP, Kansas City, MO

For some excellent Mexican grilled chicken add El Pollo Rey in KCK to your list. The menu isn't extensive and I consider it to be pretty authentic.. The guys at Pollo Tropical in South Florida need to come here and take lessons. Look for the stack of wood on the sidewalk. It is small but the chicken is some of the best in the KC metro, even better than any fried I have tasted.

Another excellent Mexican restaurant is Frida's down in lower Overland Park. It is a hike but the food is not your typical Tex/Mex. I can recommend the chilies in nogada. http://www.kcrestaurantguide.com/fridasmenu.pdf

The Woodyard opens at 10am so you can have either a late breakfast or early lunch. When I was there at that time I got to spend some time talking to the Pitmaster. And try the burnt ends chili.

El Pollo Rey KC KS

I have eaten there a couple of times. It was recommended and it lived up to its recommendation. The chicken is excellent. And you know they are grilling over real wood because of the wood stacked up on the sidewalk.

Best places to eat in OKC

Ludivine is real close to downtown and is pretty awesome. They local source what ever they can. Two chef friends really like it there. Apparently the bar has great food also. http://ludivineokc.com/

Missouri KC to Springfield

I had an excellent dinner at Nonna's in downtown Springfield. I was blown away at the number of small cafes, bistros and a stores in downtown. It was the first time I had been there in about 9 years, talk about a huge turnaround. There was lots of foot traffic and parking was definitely a premium. I want to do some more exploring in that area.

Golden Phoenix Oklahoma City

I have been known to drive over to OKC just to have lunch at the GP. They make a carpacio style salad that I love. The salted squid is a favorite, the Green Papaya salad with shrimp is another favorite. When ordering the duck, we usually ask for a combo plate, half duck, half pork.

They do a tremendous take out business besides the sit-down service.

Cajun King Buffet Oklahoma City

The concept of good Louisiana style food here in Oklahoma is not something I have found yet. After several attempts at trying to find a decent gumbo, I have given up for now. As for the bland food, your in the Midwest now and in spite of how many people will try to tell you Oklahoma is the south, if you can't get grits at ANY place that serves breakfast then your not in the south.

The Golden Pheonix is a chinese/vietnamese place on Classen at 27th. Some of the best Asian food I have found in Oklahoma. And I live in Tulsa.

Tulsa - Downtown Dining

I second the Boulder Grill. Other downtown locations are The Brady Tavern at Brady and Main, Back Alley BBQ in the alley behind JoeMomma's Pizza which is also good. For Sushi you might want to check out Yokozuna's or The Sushi House. There have been several new entrys in the downtown/BlueDome/Brady districts for dining lately. If you want to go a bit afield, Cherry Street is an excellent dining district and there is also Wolfgang Puck Bistro on S Peoria in Brookside which is another excellent dining district. I am sure I have missed some. Oh, crepes at Mod Cofffee and Crepes also has a nice small selection of gelatos besides the crepes in downtown.

Recs between Tulsa and St. Louis on I-44?

Also in south Tulsa is Hebert's (home of the turducken) and they have alligator wings. http://www.hebertsmeats.com/

Coffee stops on roadtrip CA->AZ->NM->TX->OK->KS->MO->IA->MN

Here in Tulsa you have two choices for local coffee houses, Double Shot on S Boston roasts their own beans. Double Shot went up against Starbucks over its name and Won. And the other one, Topeca Coffee not only roasts their own, they grow their own on a family owned plantation in El Salvador.

TULSA: 4 new elegant excellent restaurants opened last week!

Brian, man you really keep on top of everything. I have now tried 3 of the new places, I didn't realize that Gemma's had opened. I had wondered what Steve was up to these days, I have to put him on my must try list. And the Urban Kitchen on Cherry Street. Not to mention the new Ella's at 30th and Harvard.

Tulsa/Broken Arrow, Oklahoma

A couple of suggestions, Broken Arrow is more of a chain restaurant place. Wanda J's on Elm has some pretty good soul food.

Some of the best Thai food is at My Thai Kitchen, Harvard and 30th in a little strip center. Ella's Good Food is almost right next door, I recommend the swordfish if they have it on the menu that night. I had it grilled with a dill sauce over risotto and it was delicious.

Mi Terra is a pleasant surprise. There are several taco trucks around town and everyone has their favorites, mine is the one at Lewis and 2nd. Great mexican hot dogs. Another place to consider for Mexican is La Hacienda on S Peoria in a center next to a QT. I can make a meal out of one order of the carnitas appetizer.

Another Asian place is KEO also on S Peoria, the chef is Cambodian and the menu is a blend of several Asian cuisines, I like to start with the Ahi Poke and on Sunday, the Crispy Shrimp balls to start brunch are crispy juicy.

Stonehorse for an upscale dinner is a great place to go. Chef Tim has what I consider to be some of the best crabcakes in the whole state of Oklahoma, North Texas, and NW Arkansas.

If you go to the Brasserie on S Peoria be sure to give the Fois Gras appetizer a try.

Breakfast
The best breakfast in town is at the Wild Fork, upscale but not all that expensive, and very good.
Tally's on 11th is quintessential Route 66 diner.
The Blue Dome diner in downtown is very good.

For BBQ, Albert G's on S Harvard is darn good although my favorite is Buffalo in Sperry and I don't know if Donnie is going to be open that week.

For seafood, Bodean's on51st is about the freshest in town for upscale dining. White River is a favorite of Jan and Micheal Stern of Road Food and of mine for just good seafood.

When it is chilly out, the best place to go is Ike's Chili on E Admiral. The place has a history and it is another Road Food Favorite as well as mine. Something about a bowl of Red done Okie style to warm the heart.

Have fun, enjoy our town.

Duck in OKC?

The Super Cao Nguyen on N Military in OKC is the best Asian market in the state. Huge, clean, great selections. They should have your duck. If you want some crispy duck, The Golden Phoenix on N Claussen has the best.

Tulsa,OK Is the Cypress Grill still good? What are some other don't miss restaurants

Here is a website that Brian posts on frequently that might help you find something new. http://www.tulsafoodblog.com/

Best Chicken Fried Steak in Ft. Worth??

I had the CFS at Chef Point Cafe in Watonga tonight and it was one of the better ones I have had in the DFW. Cool place, located inside a Conoco Gas Station.

What's happening in Ft Worth and environs.

Now that my In and Out question has been answered, I have a further inquiry.

I will be judging BBQ at the Bedford Blues and BBQ event on Sunday. Any suggestions for treats for the tastebuds on Friday and Saturday? B,L, & D, I am open, i have a car and am somewhat familiar with the area. Have not been there for a year and am looking for new. I would prefer to stay on the Ft Worth side of the airport. I intend to try to get to the Kendall on Saturday afternoon for the Maya exhibit. Price wise, not a big deal, I love a good taco truck and have fond memories of splendid dinners at Lanny's. If Tei-An was in Ft Worth then I would be there for at least one meal. No BBQ because I will be getting to indulge in a 24 course tasting of some fine bbq at the event on Sunday. In terms of breakfast, someplace out of the ordinary, not really into diners anymore, am about burned out on those. Someplace with extraordinary pastries and good coffee would be nice.

If you have never been a KCBS bbq judge I highly recommend that you check it out. It really is a 24 course tasting menu of all bbq by the time you finish. And you get to take some home, Bonus!!!!.

In & Out in Dallas

Is the In & Out that was supposed to happen in Dallas open yet?

Good Chinese takeout in Tulsa?

Have you tried the Golden Gate on Harvard? They will customize a meal for you. http://www.goldengatetulsa.com/

Brunch in Tulsa

I have a new favorite place for brunch in Tulsa. It is the Bluestone Steakhouse at 101st and Sheridan in south Tulsa. The food is worth the drive from midtown, trust me. We arrived at 11am as we weren't sure of how busy they would be. The churches had not let out yet so it was pretty quiet which was fine. Even though this gem of a place was located in a strip center, it was comfortable and cozy, the blinds on the windows helped disappear the rest of the shopping center.

The food was excellent, I ordered the classic Eggs Benedict and they were almost perfect and my dining partner ordered the special of the day, a crab meat filled omelet. The benedict was perfectly done, the eggs were nice and runny and not overpoached like I have expereinced a lot of in Tulsa. The hollandaise sauce was the real deal, nice and buttery eggy with just a bare hint of a hot sauce. The real star was the crab filled omelet, a nice balance of herbs to go with the crab meat. They were both served with house potatoes that had been cooked with peppers and onions.

In all a very nice experience that I want to repeat. I also want to check out their dinner menu. It reads very well. And if the quality of the food is like brunch it will be my new steak place.

Tahlequah, OK recs, please?

http://www.thecanebrake.com/the-canebrake-kitchen

Tahlequah, OK recs, please?

The closest splurge restaurant to Tahlequah is The Canebrake over by Ft Gibson Lake before you get to Wagoner. Otherwise, it is a small town and it is what it is from my experience. According to Google Maps it is about a 22 mile drive from Tahlequah to The Canebrake. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Mi Tierra in Tulsa. (Peruvian)

On the recommendation of a poster at Tulsafood.org I went for lunch today. Mi Tierra is a little restaurant and grocery store located on 81st just east of Sheridan next to the Hungry Howie's Pizza. The sign on the building says Gomez y Compania.

The store is clean, well lit and the staff were very congenial and helpful. I ordered the the Jalea, or the lady talking with me did. It was a traditional Peruvian seafood fry topped with pickled onions and large corn kernels (posole) and served with a nicely spiced dip. The fish was moist, the squid was mostly tender, the mussels were very good, the scallops were perfect, and there was other seafood. It was such a large portion that I didn't have room to try the flan.

So now I have a reason to return, I also want to try the ceviche, the empanadas, the arroz con pollo, and a few other items with names I have no idea what they are.

Oklahoma City Recommendations

One of the best Asian places in town in the Golden Phoenix on Claussen. Order the crispy duck and the crispy pork. The green mango salad is also excellent. For some upscale go further up Classen to the Curve where you will find Republic which has a nice selection of beers, very nice selection.
