Just back - Two Weeks
Trip Report – Two weeks
We are just back, so some hot thoughts:
Thanks to all, especially the Regulars, who put up with so much repetition. I lurked here for about a year, sifting information.
Renting an apartment and dining in was great. We were close to the Buci Marché area.
Restaurants, mostly for lunches:
La Palette Café: “C” for food; good ambiance
Le Bar Marché: “C-“ for food.
Café D’Orsay: Opulent, pricey, “B” for food.
A no-name café across from statue of St Michael by St Michel metro. Almost inedible. “F”.
Brasserie Vaudeville. “B”. Smoked fish assortment was delicate, fresh, delicious.
Food Court at the Louvre. “D”.
Bistro de la Muette. Very convenient for Marmotten museum, Marine museum, etc. Our favorite meal. Grilled veal medallions were super. Lunch special for 42€ includes aperitif, ½ bottle wine, entrée, plat, dessert, coffee. How civilized. Had oysters, New York strip, apple pastry. “A” for quality, value. Classy setting. Our best find.
Hostellerie de l'Oie qui Fume. Picked at random in 5th arr. , using Greek Taverna rule: drive into village. Pick taverna with most people. It’s always the best. This was good value, served outside regular lunch hours. Grilled Lamb was delightful.
Le Reminet for lunch. VERY good value. 14 Euros for 3 courses. Sardine(pâté)tart, planked whitefish in cream sauce, cheese or chocolate drizzled cake. “B”.
Brasserie Balzar. Good atmosphere. Roast lamb excellent. “B-” for food.
Machon d’Henri, near St Sulpice. 7 hour lamb. “C”.
Taverne Karlsbourg. Had Flammenkuche And Tartelle. “C”. Convenient to Delihene’s(sp) kitchen supplies store. Very high end!
Last lunch @ Fish La Boissonaire.(a pun). Great lunch. Salmon, skirt steak with cubes of sautéed mashed potatoes, balsamic reduction. good wine, deadly chocolate. “B”.
Three dinners:
• Auberge des Pyrenees Cevennes: “B”, Basque Omelet was special
• Petit Marguery. Very good. Pigeon with lump foie gras and apples en croute. Grand Marnier soufflé. “B”.
• Auberge Bressane. Wife had quenelles. I had escargots. Delicious. We split a Demi of Puligney Montrachet, then a bottle of St Joseph with our steaks. Sauces for steaks were excellent. Souffle Grand Marnier for dessert, the better of two. “B+”.
Overall: good ingredients, professional service, NO surliness noted at any time. Sauces make the difference. Eating out early(12:30 for lunch, 7:30 for dinner) tends to get you more attention from the kitchen, if less “buzz” out front.
traditional restaurant
Thanks. That's what I'm looking for - not so casual. Do you know of/recommend others?
traditional restaurant
Thanks for response. I'm looking for traditional, as in fine dining, classic French dishes, not as casual as Bistro, but not over the top haute cuisine.
traditional restaurant
How does a "traditional" restaurant differ from a Bistro? Can you provide some examples/favorites in the 40-60€ range(with wine)? What are typical dishes at a "traditional" restaurant? Thanks!

Ranking your Favorite Restaurants in Paris
Hi Penny: Send me an email with your address, and I'll email you my current research document. It's got about two hundred restaurants, rated and characterized, most with addresses, phone numbers.
3 best dinners
Thanks, all, for the responses. In particular, Quincy looks good, if casual; Josephine also looks good, if busy.
3 best dinners
Thanks for the advice. If you don't mind my asking, how would you characterize my choices? Is there a trend? Btw, Le Quincy was rather high on my list as well.

Beacon Hill Help
Great suggestion. Is the walk from 9 Park to Grotto mountainous? This IS aprés martini, you know :)
Beacon Hill Help
Need some chow help. We're doing MFA, then Grotto for dinner. Thought we'd stop at no 9 Park for a drink, then walk to Grotto. What is the best plan for parking?
We are from out of town, limited mobility. Also, does anyone know which mains are on the price fix @ Grotto?
Ranking your Favorite Restaurants in Paris
We aren't going for months yet. I have done a fair amount of research for a two week trip that is centered on museums. We are renting an apartment, lunching out and doing dinners in, except for three nights. I have information on 200 restaurants, aggregated from here, guidebooks, etc. Some lunch places are even sorted by district, to facilitate touring during the day. If you would like, I will forward my document to you. I need your email.
non-chowish foods.......
We still make Taco salad at least once each summer. Catalina dressing, fritos, onion, hamburger, lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese, adobo seasoning in the hamburger, beans optional(Bush bbq). Great on a hot summer night!
Soupe de Poisson
Many years ago, I had a delectable bowl at the market in Nice. Which are the best places in Paris?
What's delicious, local, and cheap in Providence?
We did Reali's last wednesday with a Restaurant.com certificate. Excellent! Wines are also inexpensive. A good deal.
Mount Washington / Conway N.H. Area.........
Try this, it was excellent, last summer: - Notchland Inn does a wonderful 5-course dinner Wed- Sun. It's open to non-guests. It's on the other side of Crawford Notch, much closer than N. Conway. website for Notchland: http://www.notchland.com/
Lunch Near Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art
Hi:
We're going to try the Vatican Treasures exhibit. Need a "late lunch" spot, not crowded, to decompress before getting back out on the Interstate. What's good and relaxed, near the Museum?
Cercle du Officier
Thanks. Anyone else, perhaps who has first-hand experience?
Also, thoughts on lunch at/near Louvre, Orsay, Rodin, Picasso, Pompidou?
Cercle du Officier
Hello:
I have a chance to stay at the French Military Officers' Club for a week, next year. I recall that their Elite restaurant was excellent, and their café was great value. My memory is from 20 years ago. We will be doing Art museums, are seniors, and will not be carousing in the evening.
What is the Cercle's reputation? What are good luncheon choices for the Art mu7seums?
Thanks!
Jim
What five cookbooks would you keep?
Again, a number of favorites. We both love to cook, tend to be non-repetitive, so it takes a lot to make it into our top five. "Jo's Spaghetti with Sausage and (white)Wine" is a clear go-to dish. We've done five or six times for guests. That's unheard of for us. The authors use some "blend-back" techniques for their pastas that enhance taste.
What five cookbooks would you keep?
We like a number of them: Risotto with Lemon Shrimp; Dragon Fire Noodles; Grilled Veal Chops. The real value, however, lies in the discussions of "bridge ingredients" which pull food and wines closer together.
Hutchinson Island Area Restaurant Suggestions?
I have just the thing for you: Pietro's on the River. Jensen Beach. Very imaginative. Good wine list. Folks used to be involved with Roddy's and Brick Wall. escargot with 4 cheeses is sinful. Crab cakes are excellent. $$$ http://pietrosontheriver.com/
Broadway, San Antonio
Looking for best lunch and dinner choices out the west side of Fort Sam Houston. Already like Picante Grill for Poblimo and top shelf margharita. We'll be in the area for 3 days. Along/near Broadway?
