Any good food at Barajas airport?

Excellent! Looking forward to a nice sandwich on my to Turkey!

Any good food at Barajas airport?

Fantastic! This seems perfect for a snack on my way to Turkey and to do some grocery shopping on my way back home.

Thanks!

Any good food at Barajas airport?

Thanks! Sounds great.

Maine Shrimp on menus

These are great! With Old Bay mayo.

Any good food at Barajas airport?

Too bad! That is exactly the kind of thing I am hoping for...

Thanks for the link. I will have to figure out which terminal we'll be in and hope for the best.

Any good food at Barajas airport?

I will have 2 layovers at Barajas on a trip this March to Istanbul (from Boston). Both are about 4 hours long, one being from 7:00 am to 11:00 am, the other from 10:15 am to 2:00 pm.

I don't think this will be enough time to leave the airport, even for something close by.

Does anyone know of anything at the airport that is good? No specific desires, just anything good. I spent 10 days in Spain 2 years ago and was in food heaven. Just looking for a taste of something good while in transit.

Thanks!
Josh

Grill menu at Toraya?

The hearts are fantastic. I've only had them once, but loved them. The waitress told me the seasoning was Brazilian, but not sure if that's how they still make them.

Caviar

Formaggio can special order for you. Takes 2 days I think. The domestic stuff starts at about $35 an oz.

Where to buy matcha powder?

If they don't have it, Ebisuya in Medford should definitely have some

Has anyone tried the Taiwanese Banquet at Taiwan Cafe?

Excellent! Thanks for all the info. I think it would probably be best to wait until after the holidays to attempt this, but I am definitely going to!

Has anyone tried the Taiwanese Banquet at Taiwan Cafe?

I've never planned/attended a chowdown. How does it work?

great meal at Bondir

I went sunday night and had some great pork belly on grits. My wife had the teff polenta with vegetable mignardises and that was very nice too. I'd recommend apple trifle dessert too if they still have it.

Has anyone tried the Taiwanese Banquet at Taiwan Cafe?

I go here a lot and the menu offers a "Taiwan Style Banquet" by special order only. The owner told me that it's for a minimum of 12 people (I think) and requires a few days' notice b/c they have to special order the ingredients from NY.

Has anyone tried it? I've been having trouble organizing enough people who would be willing to eat whatever they are given and I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble. I am usually very happy with anything I order here and wonder if the banquet meets (or exceeds?) the usual quality.

If you've had it, could you tell us some of the dishes that were included.

Thanks!

Dry Pasta Preference and Where in Boston/Burbs?

Oops. My mistake. It's "Sapori di Casa" and for some reason I don't see it on Formaggio's website but I've bought it in both their stores. And it is an egg pasta.

Here's a link to the producer's website so you can see what the packaging looks like.

All this stuff needs is a bit of butter, fresh pepper, and reggiano.

Dry Pasta Preference and Where in Boston/Burbs?

Formaggio has a brand of linguine called "Sapori di Napoli" that is fantastic. The package is about $8 and you can get 4 servings out of it (not sure of weight). Not for everyday at that price, but well worth it for a special meal. Also, it really does cook in the minute and a half that the package claims.

Slivovitz in and around Boston

I've seen it at University Wine near Porter Sq. but it's been a while since I've been in there so not sure if they still have any. Also, I think it was only one kind that they had in stock.

Strip T's increasing funkiness

He might have deep fried it again. The tofu was the exact size, shape, and color of the one they sell frozen.

Of course, I didn't go back into the kitchen, so who knows...

Strip T's increasing funkiness

You can buy that tofu at Ebisuya in Medford. It's called aburaage and comes frozen (prefried). Broil it lightly and it gets crispy like that. Stuffed with cheese is delicious.

Strip T's increasing funkiness

I had a great dish of manila clams there friday. It was on the specials board. A good portion of very fresh clams in a smoked miso broth with watercress and fingerlings. Delicious! It was my first time there and I'll definitely be back.

Kogi near Westwood?

Awesome! A-frame looks great and 21+ is no problem for us so we'll try to check out one of those 2 places. And maybe a truck too.

Thanks!

Kogi near Westwood?

Thanks for the info!

I read that about the Alibi room, but wasn't sure if it was the same as going to one of the trucks. And I do love blood sausage.

Kogi near Westwood?

Hello!

I'm visiting LA from Boston this weekend. Arriving saturday afternoon and flying back Monday first thing. I'll be in Westwood visiting in-laws and hope to check out one of the Kogi trucks at some point.

Are there kogi trucksany in Westwood on the weekends? I can get a car and drive if I have to, but I'd rather not.

I looked at the schedule on their website but can't make much sense of it as I don't know LA at all.

Thanks a lot!

Dave's Fresh Pasta in Davis Sq. has some nice stuff. Not as extensive as FK, but not as expensive either.

Does anyone else get a craving for sushi when you visit the aquarium?

Every time I go to an aquarium I have to get sushi afterward. I think it's something about the smell.

Does this happen to anyone else?

BBQsmith - great food at new food truck in front of chinatown gate

It doesn't say where they get it, but they are very friendly and I'm sure they'd be happy to share the info. I'll try to remember to ask the next time I'm there and post it here.

BBQsmith - great food at new food truck in front of chinatown gate

I tried this new food truck on Monday this week and ended up going back 2 more times in 4 days. Monday I had a smoked beef plate (brisked, I think) with a side of black beans and cole slaw. The meat was excellent, full of flavor and juicy. The cole slaw and beans had a very homemade feel to them and made the whole thing seem very healthy (even though I'd eat it anyway if it weren't).

Wednesday I had the smoked chicken plate with green beans and black beans again. The chicken was excellent. It had a great smokiness and wasn't overwhelmed by sauce so you could actually taste the chicken (this is nice considering they use only all natural meats). the chicken was served with greek yogurt, pickled shredded veggies, and a green sauce (maybe cilantro and lemon?). On top of the chicken were 2 chicken "chips." These appear to be pieces of chicken skin that are treated in some supernatural way to transform them into one of the best things I've eaten all summer. The green beans were in a creme fraiche sauce with shallots. I also tasted the pork that my dad ordered and was impressed.

Today I went back for a sandwich. They serve their sandwiches on a big slice of whole grain baguette, which I am sure is good for you, although you'd never know by the taste. The sandwich was the same chicken I had on Wednesday with the same toppings and "chips" and was wonderful.

The prices are quite good considering the general quality of the food and the fact that they are using good, all-natural meat. The chicken sandwich I had was $6, the chicken plate was $9, and the beef plate was $11. All were well worth it. They also offer tacos ($3, I think) but I haven't tried yet.

I am surprised that no one else has written about this place yet on Chowhound, or am I just not seeing the reviews?

ps, to clarify, this is not Chinese BBQ, just happens to be right there next to Chinatown

Cheapest place to buy Duvel in/near Boston?

Good point.

I've just been calling around and TJ's has the 750 bottles for 9.99. Mall liquors has 4 packs for 14.99.

So, my rough math tells me that for every $30 I spend on 750s, I get 75 oz of beer. The same $30 spent on 4 packs gets me 90 oz of beer. So, just over a free bottle per $30 spent. Makes sense to do the 4 packs.

Thanks!

Good idea! Thanks

Does anyone know a cheap place to buy Duvel around here? I can only find it for around $12 for a 750 or even $15 for a 4-pack.

Thanks!

Sustainable shopping in Boston Chinatown?

I try to do as much shopping as I can at farmer's market and in other sustainable ways. I cook a ton of asian food, however, and sometimes I have to go to Chinatown to get what I need.

Does anyone know where the veggies there come from? I assume that they are coming from fairly large, commerical farms, probably quite far from Boston, but I really have no idea. In the summer I buy 90% from farmer's markets (and do a CSA too), but for the winter I am wondering if Chinatown is a reasonable alternative to big supermarkets or if I'm just kidding myself.

Also, I was wondering if any of the seafood that I see there might be locally caught. I bought a whole fish last week and it was killed and cleaned to order. I loved how fresh it was, but didn't know whether it was farm raised or trucked from who knows where. I don't mind paying more at whole foods, but only if I know that I am actually getting something better.

Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks!
