Have you heard of persons inviting people to their home for a gourmet meal with a charge? [moved from Miami - Ft Lauderdale board]
I have heard of this; big topic on the manners/etiquette boards as a solid DON'T. Also, running a restaurant without an inspection or business license is also a DON'T. There was another post (now closed) from someone who wanted to throw a party that he had previously funded, but now wanted to charge people for. The quite correct consensus was no, that wouldn' go.
There a cooking clubs, though, where one family prepares a dinner, then someone else gets a turn next week or month, and another kind where everyone brings a gourmet dish.
Usually, if you entertain, it's on your dime. You aren't "inviting" friends, you are selling your customers food.
are you obsessed with any food product in particular?
Farro! Fell in love with it at North Pond in Chicago. Anything chocolate and Ina Garten's berry salad with limoncello.
Should prices of specials be told up front?
This is my pet peeve. The wait people rattle through the choices, and don't stop until they are done, and act annoyed when you want to know the prices.
If they are posted before being seated, we try to look them over there.
servers commenting on how much we ate - rude?
My husband eats everything that doesn't crawl off first. When they ask how we liked our dinner, I always say, "He hated it!" They get it and laugh.
Try sayng that when they comment.
Cooking in a hotel room
America's Test Kitchen' Family Cookbook has some great c/p recipes - NOT nasty at all. They are not "open and dump," though. You can get a trial subscription to their websites, and they should be there.
Consider taking a little barbeque, and some aluminum pans from the dollar store. to cook in. I can do anything on one of those. Consider "hobo packs;" meat and veggies cooked in an aluminum foil pouch.
An electric skillet isn't a bad idea, either.
Why did my fried chicken burn?
Test your thermometers by boiling water; it should read 212 when it boils. If not, you will know that your thermometers are off.
I do best at frying golden delicious chicken with a dollop of saved bacon grease, along with shortening. Yes, shortening. I could never figure out why my fried chicken was so greasy, when my mothers' and gmothers' was always so crips and delicious. Oils are just too thin IMO to sucessfully cook the chicken properly.
ISO 1.5 & 2 L Mason jars for storing pantry goods (reasonably priced)
Oooops! I meant KitchenKrafts.com not Kitchen Collection. I like KC, but just not for canning. Sorry.
ISO 1.5 & 2 L Mason jars for storing pantry goods (reasonably priced)
That will be tough. Canning is enjoying a resurgence; last year there was a shortage last year. Walmart maybe or The Kitchen Collection.com (can't set a link) Might try some thrift stores though: Salvation Army or Goodwill.
