Food tours in Iceland?

We are headed there in late March, were you able to do any food touring?

Geneseo area

I will be staying in the Geneseo area for a couple of nights. I would appreciate restaurant recommendations based solely on the quality of the food (ambience unimportant) . I like places focused on good ingredients and good prep (any cuisine) and friendly (not necessarily formal) service. I would be willing to travel 45 min for a good food find. Thanks for your input

Cappadocia Restaurants

Has anybody any updates from recent experience in the Cappadocia area? we will be dining ther in a couple of weeks. Thanks for your recommendations.

Sunday Dinner, 1 day in Chicago

Thanks nsxtasy. I had been told by my Chicago office (as I have now learned thanks to you, incorrectly) that Spiaggia was closed on Sundays. I did not include Alinea because there are no available reservations, given my last minute timing. I have narrowed my seletion to North Pond (thanks for the correction of the name), Sable and either of the 2 Spiaggia rests. The North Pond setting is intriguing and would probably be my pick if I was confidant that the food would be as wonderful as the setting sounds. UnfortunatleyI have read a number of online reviews that speak of poor service and inconsistent culinary results. I may save Sable for breakfast or lunch on Monday,or perhaps an after dinner drink on Sunday.

Sunday Dinner, 1 day in Chicago

I will be arriving in Chicago next Sunday morning and will be leaving Monday afternoon. After having done some research for my Sunday evening meal I have found that most of the "upscale" recommended restaurants are closed on Sunday evening. I appear to be left with a choice of:
North Point,
Sepia,
Boka and
Longman & Eagle (which appears to be some distance from The Drake where I will be staying).

Although I initally was thinking upscale, if there is a restaurant I am inadvertenly missing because it is not so classified, please let me know . I enjoy neighborhood gems and regional classics as well.
Any recommendations from among the foregoing, or others that I have not yet identified, is greatly appreciated. . Thanks in advance for your assistance

Wheatleigh Dining

We are back and I wanted to give an update based on our experience. For lunch on Thursday we ate at Alta. Food was simple but excellent, service was pleasant. We ate at Nudel on Thursday night, the food was excellent but the room was very crowded and the waitstaff could most generously be described as very pressed---not gracious just food placed on the table. On Friday we ate at Wheatleigh, in the less formal Library Room. Food was excellent but wait staff was incompetent. We were going to eat in the Wheatleigh formal Dining Room the next night but because we expereinced incompetent wait service at breakfast as well, we decided to try the Old Inn on the Green for Saturday dinner. A mistake. Though the food was good, the ambience was awful. I am not sure why it bothers to use candlelight. The noise, and constant commotion from wait staff and patrons makes this a very unpleasant place for a couple to dine. The ambience has no more appeal than a fast food restaurant. On the way back to the City on Sunday we stopped at Rudi's for an excellent quick sandwich and coffee for lunch.

Wheatleigh or Old inn on the Green for romantic anniversary dinner?

Based partially on thr discussion of this thread, I ate at OIOTG this past Saturday. The food was very good but the ambience was not much better than sitting in a bus station. Sure there is candlelight but there is also a din from too many tables and large groups pressed into too small a rooms with low ceilings. In addition because of the warren nature of the arrangement of the rooms there is constant commotion by either wait staff or incoming or outgoing patrons. Not at all romantic. Wheatleigh, where we also ate, was much more tranquil and romantic. Caveat emptor, however, Wheatleigh is significantly more expensive than OIOTG ---close to twice the cost.

Wheatleigh Dining

Thanks for your input. I have eaten, and lodged, at the Blantyre, and it was very nice. Given the strong recommendations I am reading about some of the other places, however, I wanted to try something different this year. Both Alta and OIOG appear to be consistently highly rated.

Wheatleigh Dining

Early this fall I will be in Lenox for a long weekend (4 nights). Is it worth dining at the Wheatleigh? I will not mind the steep price (compared to other area restaurants that receive good reviews on this Board) if the meal warrants it. If I am merely paying for ambience I would prefer to eat elsewhere. Thank you in advance for your thoughts based on recent experience.
Other places under consideration:
Alta
Old Inn on the Green
Rouge
Nudel
Mezze
Dreamaway Lodge (nostalgic)

Rhode Island --en route to Cape Cod

I will be traveling to Cape Cod this weekend . I already know where I will be eating on the Cape but I would like to stop for lunch on the way there from NYC (route: I-95 to I-195 to Rte 25 etc.), probably near Providence. I am willing to stray 15-20 minutes form my route. Suggestions for excellent informal local seafood, or other not to be missed venues, would be greatly appreciated.

Breslin

The other day I had lunch at the Breslin, housed within the Ace Hotel. Our dishes were quite good: skate terrine, lamb burger, salad, fries, chocolate donuts. The service, however, was not just bad it was atrocious. The person acting like the host surely could not have much experience being in the front of the house. He really did not seem to know what he was doing, and certainly did not act particularly interested in our patronage. When we arrived, the room was empty but for 2 tables. None the less, even though the restaurant does not take reservations he would not allow us to sit at a table, instead he fidgeted around for 5-10 min. before seating us. With an entire room empty he sat us next to the service area...the place takes no reservations so we just ignored him and moved to another table. There was a lot of wait staff but no one seemed to be tending to the few patrons in the restaurant, instead they were all hanging out at the kitchen counter with their backs to the dining room. When a customer wanted something , the staff were none the wiser because they were not facing the room. Requests for condiments, (salt pepper etc.) were not responded to until the third time. It took close to 40 minutes for our dishes to arrive..when the office awaits your return from lunch, you do not want to wait for more than half an hour for a burger and fries (the terrine was cold and I assume it too could be completed in less time). I wonder what they plan to do when the restaurant is filled.
It really is unfortunate how poor, very poor, service can color (for the worst) the whole experience that the kitchen has clearly tried hard to make wonderful. Hopefully ,as the Breslin matures, it will either replace the incompetent/disinterested staff, or provide proper training.

Underground 'In Home' Restaurants in Italy

Erica, The dinners cost 40 euros/pp+Home Food membership (3.50/month/pp...but it is a one time fee so if you have more than one dinner in the month you do not pay the fee twice ..) On particular dates, specfied meals at stated locations are offered...HF limits the number dining. We told Home Food where and when we wished to dine and it proposed the meals available. For more info you should email Home Food through its site. I found it to be very helpful and willing to assist.

Underground 'In Home' Restaurants in Italy

We have returned after to wonderful meals with Home Food hosts, one each in Bologna and Milan. The hosts were not only marvelous cooks but were also very engaging dinner company. The only difficulty was that the host in Bologna only spoke Italian so we needed to rely on the translation services of my daughter who is in Italy studying among other subjects, Italian. Notwithstanding this language barrier the host's warm hospitality was very welcoming and we all felt very comfortable. In Milan, there was no language barrier and by the end of the evening we felt as if we had made new friends. The food in both instances, was excellently prepared and traditonal for the region. In sum a worthwhile experience which we intend to repeat on our return trips.

Florence on Sunday

As planned, we ate at 13 Gobbi on our Sunday in Florence and, unfortuantely, were not impressed. It was competent (not more so) but we thought overpriced and very touristy. If I was to be in Florence on a Sunday again I would try somewhere else (probably the recommended Paoli). We very much enjoyed our meal at La Pentola. We also had a great meal at Coco Lezone, where we have eaten on each of our trips to Florence over the years. Prices have increased significantly but the food is still great.

Bistecca alla Fiorentina-Prices

We were in Florence last week and had bistecca at Coco Lezone. It cost 40 euros/kilo. Coco is a tradition with us whenever we are in Florence and for over 25 years it has maintained its quality although costs have increased. I think your budget cap of roughly $50/pp (about 35-40 euros currently) is doable assuming you will not eat more than 1/2 kilo/pp...and assuming you drink house wine. ENJOY
