i'm powerless over ... mayo

Oh me too! I"m so glad I am not the only person disappointed with Duke's. I will forever be a Hellmen's girl. though Kraft is ok in a pinch. Anything besides the fat free crap.

Eating Potatoes Raw

Oh so not true that this is a myth! while I don't eat potatoes like apples, I do enjoy a few slices raw with salt when I am preparing potatoes for supper. And Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh has a potato stand that sells both french fries and raw potatoes.

What is your favorite honey? And what type of honey (clover, alfafa, etc.)?

As the great grandaughter of a beekeeper I love all honey. But my favorite is the darker honeys. Buckwheat especially. Basswood is good also. It all depends on what tastes good to you.

what's the best brand of marmelade (orange or other)?

I would love to find another jar of that lemon marmelade. It was fabulous! I also like Rose's Key Lime marmelade on english muffins. Wish it came in a smaller jar though.

Sins in the Kitchen

My husband keeps relocating items in our kitchen and then forgetting months later that he did so. The last time this happened he barked at me and I barked back that he was the one who moved the measuring cups to the drawer months ago so that's where I had been putting them. Haven't heard a word about it since.

Sins in the Kitchen

In my opinion you are not being anal. I too dislike my wood handled knives and other wood kitchen equipment being sent through the dishwasher. In fact, it makes me quite irate.

Mustard lovers unite!

My little sister was the same way. And this is way before the trend of letting the customer dictate what they want or don't want on their sandwich. We used to scrape everything off her burger and hope that we got it all.

What's your favorite gum flavor?

Clove
Blackjack
Beaman's
Teaberry
Juicyfruit
Dentine shaped like the old Trident
Bazooka Bubblegum

Most underused spices in home cooking?

Tarragon...I rub dried tarragon and garlic on pork roast. The roast that is triangle shaped with a decent fat pad. I roast it fat side up on a rack and flip it half way through the roasting time. Lovely hot and even better sliced cold for pork sandwiches the next day.

Most underused spices in home cooking?

I use paprika in a spanish shrimp dish. I use it in my chili, along with other spices for homemade chili powder. I use it on fried onions and mix in sour cream to make a sauce for fried pierogi.

Trappist Preserves - Anyone Tried Them?

I've had the lemon marmalade which was fabulous. Te damson plum met with my mother-in-law's approval and she is from West Virginia. The seedless red raspberry was really good too.

Confirmed Dead Product List (What ever happened to.... Dept.)

You can still find Green Goddess Dressing. I just finished up a bottle not that long ago.

Buckwheat Flakes cereal

I have fond memories of Buckwheats. I will forever associate them with my grandfather. They were his absolute favorite. Also, and exboyfriend still laments the discontinuation of Buckwheats.

Saltines, Soda Crackers, Whatever...

What I notice about soda crackers is that they seem to be underbaked. Never a good browned on in the bunch more often than not. Sad when companies can't even make soda crackers correctly.

Storm shopping

I purchase gallon jugs of water. Canned soup, ravioli, stuff that can be eaten cold and opened with a manual can opener. Bread, snacks, nuts, anything that can be stored without refridgeration. When a big storm blows it isn't a guarantee that a person will have electricity so we stock up on candles too. Matches and/or lighters to light said candles and our gas range. It has an electric start so I don't know how we would light the oven but the burners we can light to at least cook. Powdered milk or canned milk can get us by in a pinch.

Do people really (and I mean "really") like Girl Scout Cookies?

I think it is the nostalgia and the guilt factors at work here. GS cookies don't taste any better than other purchased cookies, but we would NEVER pay those prices in a regular store.

"Cross contamination!" "Cross contamination!" "Cross contamination!" "ZOMG!!! Cross contamination!"

Heck, I grew up in a time when mothers used wooden cutting boards all the time and wiped our hands and faces after supper with the dishcloth. None of us died.

Can someone explain eating Kosher to me? (split from Ontario board)

The meat/dairy requirements extend to the dishes also. One set for meat and one set for dairy is the norm in most kosher homes.

When you first started cooking away from home, what were some of your disasters?

Several years ago I had a house full of family for Easter. I took the lemon meringue pie out of the oven and put the ham in. Several hours later I check the ham and the oven is stone cold. I am quietly freaking now because I have two hours to go before dinner on a holiday. By chance I looked up and realized the oven was turned off. Yes, I flipped the dial off out of habit when I took the pie out. So I cranked her up to 500 to get things rolling and then reduced the heat once the oven was hot. Thankfully I had started the ham 2 hours too early. It turned out perfectly as almost all hams in Virginia do. It is the land of good ham, you have to try really really hard to find a bad one down there.

When you first started cooking away from home, what were some of your disasters?

ROFLOL...Satan's toffee!!! That is way too funny. OMG I laughed out loud so hard the cats peeled out in fright for parts unknown at the back of the house.

Lapsand Souchong-Metallic Taste?

Firstly, I love tea. I drink it every day almost all day. But Lapsang Souchong is one tea I cannot abide. The description of it piqued my interest, but when I made a cup it tasted so strongly of smoke that it made me gag. I could not drink it and threw out the entire box. It was one of the grossest things I have ever tasted. That and chrysanthymum tea.

The Best Dried Pasta.

De Cecco and Barilla are my favorites. Though I was raised on Creamettes so that's what I grab for certain dishes.

The one night a week you purposely stay in and you eat....?

It makes me sad when singletons don't feel like they should cook well for themselves and instead relay on boxed, frozen or take out foods. When I was single I would make a batch of soup each week. I would eat on it for a day or two and then freeze the rest in individual bowl-sized containers. I'd have 7-8 soups in the freezer at any given point in time. So time saving.

Now that I'm married, I still have a seudo single life as my husband is in the navy. So when he is out to sea I get to cook all the dishes he would rather die than eat. I have nice wine when I dine alone and usually burn candles. It is nice to pamper ourselves once in a while.

Johnsonville Brats--what's the big deal?

I cook my brats in the opposite order. I simmer them in beer and onion and then finish them off on the grill.

Johnsonville Brats--what's the big deal?

Johnsonville Brats original flavor will forever be the brat that tastes "right" to me because it was my first experience with brats. I grew up in PA where we ate italian sausages with peppers and onions, so brats were this new thing for me. However I had an Abbyland brat this summer and they are outstanding. If you ever see them please try them. The packaging isn't impressive but these brats are simply delicious.

JennieO Turkey Products-Any Opinions?

I love some of their products. A cousin-in-law gets the odd weight breast lobes at a ridiculously low price as an employee there and shares with the family. The cajun spiced on is fabulous in a salad, as a sandwich, thinly sliced on cheese and crackers.

Your last meal

Oh Maggie, I am so saddned by your news. I know these sites are basically a community of strangers, but this site seems to draw the best of the best. And you are just that for so calmly facing your troubles and sharing them with us. Know that I am uplifted by your spirit and spunk just as much as I am made sad by your situation. God bless.

Your last meal

I would have Grandma Troutman's cinnamon rolls, her potato soup and her meatballs. And I would have my Grandma Goss' creamed chicken over baking powder biscuits and a slice of her pie. My requirement would be that each grandma makes these dishes with her own hands. And as they have both passed on, I'll never be executed.

Differences in Curry Powder

I've tried several different curry powders and they were all unique. Yes they shared some ingredients, but the overall flavor and heat level was vastly different. I really enjoy a tin I purchased in an Asian market in VA. But I also love madras curry powder also. And then there is the little box of curry powder I found in an Indian market. My advise would be to experiment with several and find one that you like.

Ten Most Favorite Sandwiches

I forgot to mention the pepper jack cheese and mayo on #5.
