Vegetarian Mary Chung's
I have been going to Mary Chungs since 1983 and I am not sure about any of those dishes but if you ask Mary or the host (I think it is Mary's son) or hostess (not the waitress) you are more apt to get and answer you can understand that is infact true. Most of the waitresses have no clue what goes on in the kitchen.
Pea Tendrils?
Mary Chungs had Pea Pod Shoot yesterday and they were yummy, a bit pricey though at $11.50.
Takeout or meal delivery for new parents; downtown Boston?
I use foodler.com. They have menus online for places that deliver or takeout places all over the boston area. I like it because they have all types of food.
Best Cupcakes in Boston
I did not have the same experience with Babycakes. I was really excited when I found out about the place because I absolutely love cupcakes. I finally got a chance to get over there early enough for them to be open.
Everything looked great so I got a french Toast cupcake, which was good but I wouldn't call it a cupcake, it's bread pudding. I got one of each kind available at the time and to make up a full dozen I got 2 baby cakes. I couldn't wait to break into the box when I got them home a friend and I each chose one from the box to split because I wanted to taste them all. I chose the one I thought that I would like the least in order to save the best for last and I was right. One bite and I spit it out, I couldn't even tell which flavor it was. I tried the next one and it wasn't as bad as the first but it had good flavor but was dry. I was truely disappointed because I had heard so much about this wonderful place and the cupcakes were just okay.
I tasted about six of them before I threw the rest away, I just couldn't bring myself to eat them.
JAMAICAN PATTIES- the search continues for homemade
Irie has the same patties as everyone else I am afraid.
ISO Childhood candy - Help! [moved from Boston board]
You can probably find them at www.yummies.com, they have all the old stuff
Pea Tendrils?
They often have what they call "Pea Shoots" at Mary Chungs. They are always very yummy. Same thing different name.
Bulk dried fruit and nuts?
Trader Joe's prices are great. You may want to try Tropical Foods on Washington Street near Dudley Square. They may not have everything that you are looking for, but the prices are great on their bulk products.
Custom fondant like cookies near Boston?
A Dozen Eggs is great! http://www.adozeneggs.com/ there was a profile of them on the foodnetwork. The cookies are really good. I have never ordered anything custom, but I know that they do offer custom items.
ice-cream trucks?
Depending on how far you want to go with this, I would contact the people that supply the ice cream trucks with goodies.
Graduating - Recommend a Chinese Restaurant for my family?
I am very fond of Mary Chung's in Cambridge. They do have a large table in the back that can probably accomodate 10. They will reserve it if you call ahead. The food there is excellent.
West Indian Roti
Ali's Roti is very good and very authentic Trinidadian Roti. I will never forget the first time I had it, talk about making a fool out of oneself. A friend of mine ordered a chicken roti for me and it was nicely wrapped up so I bit into it like a burrito, broke a tooth because I didn't realize that it wasn't boneless. So a tip for beginners, if you are ordering chicken roti don't forget to order the boneless chicken.
ECO-FRIENDLY EATS
Veggie Planet owner (didi emmons) is the chef I spoke about earlier at Haley House
ECO-FRIENDLY EATS
I know that the Chef at Haley House Cafe in Dudley Square is very earth concious and particular about the ingredients she brings in. Their food is great and I believe they now have a Jazz brunch on Sunday that runs about $15 from what I hear.
achiote seasoning
I would try tropical foods on Washington Street. They have quite a variety. I do not recall seeing that brand in Shaw's but I have seen in at the South Bay Stop & Shop quite some time ago. You can also order it online at http://www.mexgrocer.com/brand-el-yucateco.html
Utz Mystic Dark Russet Chips?
Pizzadoro's on River Street in Dedham has Utz chips but the variety varies. The other day I had the Malt Vinegar and salt for the first time and I can't wait to get some more.
ethnic groceries
Tropical Foods on Washington Street in Dudley Square has great selections of island, african and hispanic foods. They have great prices, and cheap meat as well.
Best Cupcakes in Boston
I went to Sugar based on this posting and I was not impressed with the cupcakes. The cake was dry. Nothing worse than dry cake.
When I went to sugar I spent over $30 and tried many different things. I found nothing that was wonderful and the service wasn't very good. Everything I tasted was so so. I was very disappointed. I thought the prices were high. I recently went to Arthur's in Medford and the flavor was better and the prices were much more reasonable. I purchased similar items and similar numbers and it was all under $20.
Pho 2000, Dorchester
Must have been an off day for them, I eat there regularly and their beef broth has always been quite nice.
Looking for baked empanadas
I miss those empanadas. I had a fried chicken empanada from a corner store in Dorchester near the YMCA and it was fairly empty and non satisfying.
Who's cooking the eggs right?
The best Bacon, Egg and Cheese or just Egg and Cheese sandwiches are found at True Grounds in Somerville. Perfectly cooked, really creamy scrambled eggs. They have awesome breakfast burritos too.
Where to find Conch?
There is a place just in front of Taurus meat packing off of Mass Ave that has a sign up that says they have Conch. I have no idea what the name of the place is but if you go down Mass ave near 1010 Mass Ave and the Victoria Diner look across the street and down the side street for a large pink pig head (that's Taurus). Maybe worth a try.
breakfast near somerville
I am also a big fan of soundbites for breakfast the food is great if you want a full breakfast. Great thing is that they deliver too. True Grounds across the street has the best breakfast sandwiches that I have ever had and they have a breakfast burrito that is really good too.
Red Velvet Cake
It isn't vanilla cake it is chocolate cake with red food coloring and buttermilk.
Dorchesters best???
Ice Cream Smith makes their own ice cream and it is tasty. Another good choice for ice cream in Dorchester is The Ice Cream Factory on Morrisey Blvd. Irie Does not make their own ice cream and the interesting flavors they have are similar to other Carribean ice cream shops in the area.
Brioche In Boston
Canto6 has wonderful brioche but often sell out of things by lunchtime, so call ahead.
Sunkist fruit gems
I bought them at Shaws about 2 months ago, I think it was the Shaws in west roxbury. You may want to try a bulk candy shop, I know there used to be one in Harvard Square. But if you don't have any luck maybe you could try http://www.candywarehouse.com/fruitgems.html and have them express mailed.
Looking to buy a whole pigs leg (fresh ham)
I have kids, it's a good eye spy item. The sign seems out of place and it's pink. And oh how I do remember the taste of pork, but ... it's been a while. Drool
