I don't remember the Beticia from last season. My wife bought them last week; it wasn't off the Gardenia (where we usually buy), but she's not sure of the name of the boat.

100% grass fed beef. Icky! Am I crazy?

I have an acquaintance that is a geneticist by trade (worked on the human genome project at Stanford), and a hobby cattle farmer. His cattle are grass fed and grain finished. Best damn rib steak I've ever had - by far. Much superior to the local grass fed and finished rancher at the farmer's market.

Grass fed is like any other ag product - variable. Like wine, it all comes back to varietal (breed) and terroir......

CHOW Tour Oakland, Your Thoughts On Where To Go?

YES! Thanks, Ruth.

CHOW Tour Oakland, Your Thoughts On Where To Go?

To Temescal or not to Temescal....

By any name, this area was a food institution for as long as I can remember. Genova, Ravazza's (who gave part of their sign to ZZA's on Grand), Vern's Market (the only place my grandmother would buy her chitlins), and .........what was the name of the Italian restaurant with the really cheap drinks (doubles and triples)...

LI Strawberry festivals?

While your Driscoll's Strawberries were probably grown and picked in California at this time of year, not all berries distributed by Driscoll's are grown in California. You can enter the tracking number on the Driscoll's clamshell on the website to find out where your berries were grown.

Driscoll's strawberry breeding program is the largest in the world. We are constantly developing and testing new varieties. All our new variety development is done the old fashioned way - cross fertilization of berry plants. Enjoy!

S. Bay Dinner Suggestion Tonite!

I'm picking my wife up in the Pruneyard at 4:30 and attending a concert in Morgan Hill at 6:30. Anyone have a suggestion for someting chowish - moderately-priced or less - between here and there? I'm thinking Campbell, Los Gatos, or Morgan Hill.

Moving to Oakland - Any Place to Eat??????

Let's see......Dad's BBQ has been out of business for a while. There is a branch of JJ's Fish in its place. Aqua Seafoods is another fried fish joint. Which reminds me..I haven't been to the place on Market? in West Oakland in forever. What's the name of it again? You know the place its been there forever (as long as i can remember and I grew up in that neighgborhood about 40 years ago, and it seems to take as long to get your fish)...oh, yeah Emma's.

Jerry's is your standard burger joint, Cornerstone cafe is standard breakfasts.

Zocalo's is my favorite coffee shop. Not that the coffee and/or pastries are memorable, its just an excellent place to kick back and read the paper. Great space, and great local vibe.

Wave 'em High, Ruth. Wave 'em High. Martinez?? Unbelievable!

where to Pho in Oakland

I've moved away but am frequently in Da Town for A's games, family, etc. I remember my first Pho when Pho 84 used to be across the street from the Alice Arts center. I had found a new favorite food! I used to frequent it for lunch when it moved to 17th St. Last time I went there, it was throroughly unremarkable.

Where are the best Pho joints in the Big O?

Al Pastor tacos in Oakland

Thanks all. I moved out of Oakland 5+ years ago, and I've been stuck looping through my old favorites. Otaez has been one of them for many years, but not for the al pastor. I can still remember the incessant sound of patting from the tortillas being made in the kitchen of Otaez the first time I wandered in. It's a fond memory; thanks for igniting it.

As far as the pineapple goes, I'm not too concerned about the Mexican authenticity, just in the deliciousness. The al pastor that changed my life came from that first great taco truck (Zamorano) that was parked in the lot at High Street and E 14th. I'm sure it was neither spit roasted nor pineappled.
