Jenkintown/Abington/Glenside/Willow Grove

Have you been to Curds and Whey recently? I used to really like it there, but then found the food started slipping while at the same time the prices started rising. Because I'd previously enjoyed it numerous times, I gave it 2 more tries after the first downhill experience, but I counted 3 times as a strikeout and haven't returned in probably a year. If anyone has recent experience I'd be interested to hear.

Other suggestions have all been good. Thien Thai which has both Thai and Japanese menus, on Old York Rd., is quiet and the food is good. There's also a Thai place in Roslyn that's good, if you're interested I'll get you the name.

Keswick Village in Glenside is ripe for new and better restaurants, imho.

What's the farthest from Ambler you're willing to drive?

CHEAP EATS IN HORSHAM/WILLOW GROVE

I'm glad to hear about this, thanks!

Does anyone go to Serrano on 2nd St if they're not going to Tin Angel afterwards?

Like others have said, we only go there when we want good seats for a show. We've never thought it was bad, just not good enough when compared with other places, to go back just for the food.

We generally eat at World Cafe Live for a show even tho' not required for good seats, just 'cause it's easier than moving from one place to another and breaking up conversation with friends. But a couple weeks ago we were there and the food was better than other times, so on that one, we're hopeful!

Jasmine Asian Bistro, Glenside

I'm sorry to hear that , we've liked a lot of things at Jasmine. It's less than 5 minutes from us so although there are other Chinese restaurants that are quite good, not far away, Jasmine has become our go-to for a tired weeknight a couple times per month.

I'm trying to remember specifics...I often "create my own" and love that they're willing to work with me, since not all places are as accomodating. Last time I was there I asked for shrimp with walnuts mandarin oranges, and broccoli, medium spicy, with brown rice, and I enjoyed it. Another time I asked for bean curd with eggplant and mushrooms and enjoyed that as well. We've often had chicken with broccoli with brown rice, a boring but fine staple for us, since we try to eat healthy more often than not. My husband's liked their stir-fry brown rice, I think the pork one but I'm not sure. Most times I've enjoyed their spinach and shrimp dumplings although I admit last time they were too dough-y. We've enjoyed some of their other steamed dumplings as well tho' it's been a while since we ordered those. And yes, we get soup quite a bit.

We did once get something we didn't like there, but it was many months ago and I forget what it was. For us, that was clearly the exception, not the rule.

Mad Mex Willow Grove

I'm so glad to hear this! We noticed Mad Mex this past weekend as we were driving by, and wondered aloud about it. You've both made me look forward to trying it!

Dinner near World Cafe Live

Good for you, you ordered the exact right things. Definitely a place to keep it simple.

And you bring back a good memory, saw Girlyman years ago at a very small place called The Buttonwood Tree, in Middletwown CT, with my date who is now my husband!

Btw, you're not by chance the person we called "still Don" at Northeast High in the late 70s?

Dinner near World Cafe Live

We go to World Cafe Live quite a bit, don't like the food, and usually eat it anyway just for the convenience because we're often meeting friends and would rather have the extra talking time rather than having to allow time to get up and move from one place to the other.

That being said, sometimes if it's just us or our tastebuds just aren't feeling like compromising to that extent, if we have time, we head to one of the Indian restaurants in the vicinity of 40th St. If you're interested, I could get back to you with more exact names and addresses. A little bit of a walk would need to be ok, tho'.

Pumpkin Martinis - or other fall specialty drinks - in Media

Agreed about that being serious customer service! Glad to hear that, I'd forgotten about Stephen's.

Pumpkin Martinis - or other fall specialty drinks - in Media

When we lived in Media a couple years ago, we'd go to either Iron Hill or Quotations, both on State St., for fall specialty drinks. For dh it was the pumpkin beer, tho', so I can't speak to the martinis. There was also a place just a few doors down from Quotations - I think called Brodeur's? - that probably would have the martinis. But we didn't think their food was very good.

mid-scale Mexican food Glenside area?

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, it would be an extremely rare day that I could make it to Cantina Feliz on a work day by 5:30. But maybe we'll try there on a weekend! I'll have to try the other two. Thanks again.

mid-scale Mexican food Glenside area?

We've lived here a yr. now and have found great places to go for many things - Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, salads/sandwiches, etc. But we've yet to find a good Mexican place. Don't want fast food but don't want too upscale, either - rather, somewhere we'd want to go on a weeknight after work when we're too tired to cook. Suggestions, anyone?

Non-chain restaurants near the Willow Grove Mall?

Thanks!

lol great story, thanks for sharing it!

Quiet But Good Food: Glenside/Elkins Park Area

Oh, and my mom's right about Moonstruck too ;-)

Quiet But Good Food: Glenside/Elkins Park Area

Sorry I didn't see this in time to help, but here are some ideas for next time.

In our neck of the woods, for quiet Chinese, I'd pick either Mandarin Garden on Old York Rd. , Jasmine on Easton Rd. or Szechuan Mandarin in Elkins Park. Our go-to is Jasmine, as it's very near us - it's not write-home-about, but all but one dish we've ever had there have been consistently good, and they've always been good about making any changes to a dish that we ask for (i.e. extra broccoli, brown rice, etc.)

For Italian, either Trevi, which I've now had several good experiences at but also a couple not-as-good, I think they're still finding their stride. I hope they do, I think their potential is great. We also recently discovered Arpeggio in Springhouse, and liked it very much, but that's a bit farther north.

There's a small Thai place in Roslyn valley, very close to Glenside, that we've been to twice and liked, but I don't recall it's name. I wasn't as thrilled with White Elephant the one time I was there, but I know many people love it, so I'll try it again. We've also liked the Thai place where Edge Hill and Old York Rd. intersect, but I'm not doing well on names tonite!

Non-chain restaurants near the Willow Grove Mall?

I too recommend both Pho and Beyond and Mandarin Garden.

Never been to Pasta Fazool, am intrigued. Where is that? Do they serve other dishes besides pasta?

This Sunday, picnic for 45-50

Quick report back - picnic went well, some things we'd do differently next time, but overall all was fine, and we were lucky to have a beautiful day for it. I was grateful for many suggestions but I have to say the one I really owe the biggest thanks for was thinking of keeping the children entertained. I've only worked where I am for a couple years, I'm the Dept. Director and so am these folks' boss, and I think people weren't entirely sure of protocols re: various things, one of which must have been would this be relaxed and informal enough to bring games and such for the kids. So none of the parents had brought anything! I didn't have a ton of stuff, but the amount I did have, was a lifesaver.

This Sunday, picnic for 45-50

Wow, what great feedback for our list! Thank you so much, everyone!

This Sunday, picnic for 45-50

This is a new thing for me...hosting a picnic for my department staff at work, at my house (with its small back yard, tho' deck easily seats 6), about 30-35 adults and a dozen children and a couple babies.

The food will surely be wonderful as my staff includes Latina, Korean, Vietnamese, Russian, Cambodian, Jewish, and African-American folks, and all are bringing dishes.

However, being new to this, I'm a little nervous about how late we're getting going on getting ready. I thought I'd post and see if anyone has thoughts about what I should be sure not to forget to do or buy, to help things go smoothly!

Thanks in advance for any help.

do you have a tea kettle you love?

Was in a store that had the Oxo Uplift in yellow so just decided to go for it. So far, so good - tho' I wish I didn't have to angle it quite as much to put water in it thru the spout instead of taking the lid off. But that's minor, and I'm enjoying the way the spout opens when I pour. To the Oxo owners: do you really need to pour the excess water out of the pot each time, the way the instructions say? (I do the other things, about not filling all the way, and not having the flame extend beyond the pot)

TotoroO, I AM a real tea drinker, and use many types of tea, so might someday take your advice on the electric. But right now our counter space is quite limited so I decided I wanted the teapot on the burner to really work and not just steep. I've gotten pretty good over the years at knowing when the water is at the right temp for me to enjoy my tea the way I like it.

do you have a tea kettle you love?

Thanks, everyone! I haven't decided yet. I keep getting scared away by reviews that talk about leaking water when pouring or handle that gets too hot, etc. I'm telling you, I'm spending more time thinking about this than much more major purchases! But once I decide and try something new out, I'll be sure to report back.

do you have a tea kettle you love?

Thanks, Jay! That looks like a definite possibility for me. Anyone else?

Decent lunch spot between CC and Elkins Park?

BarryG, how would you describe the atmosphere of Tierra Columbiana? And is there any particular dish that you'd recommend? I almost went there for lunch last week with someone from work, but we ended up unable to go at the last minute so put it off til another time. Neither of us have been before, tho', so I was wondering a little.

do you have a tea kettle you love?

I need a new one. I'm hoping to find one that has a whistle but one that's not horribly loud, that has a handle on either top or side that doesn't get too hot to touch without a mitt on, that doesn't leak when you pour the water, or burn you when you flip the spout to pour (if indeed you do have to flip it). Oh, and that I can leave some water in when sitting on the stovetop, without rusting it.

I'm hoping for one that comes in yellow but I'll settle for red or green. I don't want clear, silver or black - I use my tea kettle every morning and most nights, and like for it to offer a cozy feel that those modern colors just don't, for me!

I'm not thinking to go electric, at this point. There's just something about the look of the kettle on the burner, that appeals to me. Anyone out there have a tea kettle that you love that would fit the above bill? Or one that you love that doesn't fit the above, but you love so much that you'd want me to compromise one of my requirements? (enthusiasm is contagious so you never know!)

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Trevi in Glenside - at last, something good in the 'hood!

mandysaunders3 posted the same thing on yelp, and on there the owner, Joe, replied. He said that he had to pry it out of the server later - it turned out she had forgotten to put the order in. He said it was a server error and he very much apologized and said he'd do his absolute best to make sure such a thing never happened again (hopefully he explained to the server that mistakes happen but then you need to own up to them, so the owner can comp the meal or do whatever it takes to have the customer leave feeling satisfied again!).

Btw I'm no friend or family of anyone at Trevi, but I live in Glenside and would love to see this place succeed. I don't think they're completely consistent yet, we've had two very wonderful meals there, and two just average (none bad). But I think his and most of his staff's hearts and skills are in the right place, and the potential for improvement over time is great.

Heirloom tomatoes

Try going to the www.buylocalpa.org website. Many links to farmers' markets that sell heirloom tomatoes in the city and out, so you can look for what's nearest you. They also link to restaurants and shops committed to using/selling local food.

You're at John's Roast Pork and It's Empty...What do you order?

After years of telling people about John's for the roast pork and cheesesteaks, this is a scary piece of information! I'm not sure I can go there and not get roast pork but I do love chicken parm and just might have to try this.

Gordonville, Intercourse area?

Thanks, brookquarry, LappValley Farm sounds wonderful, we're going to try to get there.

Gordonville, Intercourse area?

We'll be in this area this Sat., my husband's birthday, around lunchtime. Any interesting local delicious spots for lunch, that aren't the big buffet smorgasbord places? Open to all food types: we love places that use as much locally grown and/or organic as possible, but we also enjoy all types of ethnic restaurants, and he also loves going to a place known for its great burgers...in other words, anything goes! Even a great breakfast place that serves well into lunchtime hours on weekends. Thanks in advance!
