mccormick's meat marinade pasadena/silverlake?

Hey all...

Anyone know where to find speciflcally Mccormick's "meat marinade"? I've searched and searched and found a couple markets that carry Mccormick's powdered marinades (they come in a packet) but this recipe calls for the meat marinade in particular. There was a Vons near Melrose Hill that used to carry it, but they're out. Anyone know of this marinade and any market I can find it at? Preferrably between silverlake and pasadena...

Carne Guisada, anyone?

Ok, I like me some carne guisada - that salvedorean beef stew... mmmmm.... I've had it in highland park, "el buen gusto", and that small pupusa stand in silverlake. So far, silverlake is the winner. What place am I missing? Beef stew fans please address...

Thanks for the comment, but I'm actually not looking for the supermarket variety. Just commenting so there aren't lots of posts about them.

Best Bento Box in L.A.?

Hi guys -

Going to the bowl and looking for Bento box recs - the good ones. My family's from Hawaii so I have high standards. I'm also willing to drive to Torrance or wherever to get them if they're good. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Who offers the best Fried Pork Chop in the LA & OC vicinity?

it's a typical southern presentation. first the chop is breaded, then fried, then simmered in a brown gravy. it's not a subtle dish at all, it's clumsy but right on with the flavors. the gravy isn't lumpy, creamy, or overly thick at all - just the right viscosity. highly recommended. also their chicken and dumplings rule all.

Best Korean closest to Los Feliz?

So I used to go to this place in Glendale, on Brand (I can't remember the name of it) when I was sick and needed a nice bowl of soon tofu or to get my bi bim bap fix - I just found out they closed. Maybe they even closed a long time ago, but it's news to me. I digress - what's the next best thing nearest to Los Feliz? Obviously I prefer Koreatown but I mean when you just don't want to drive that far.

Din Tai Fung -is it that bad??

i think when it comes to negative reviews of din tai fung you're talking to a small group of people that like to FREAK OUT about dumplings. personally, i consider myself among the diseased and i go to din tai fung all the time. mei long village's versions are not anywhere close imo but if you're taking your visiting mother, there's no choice. din tai fung it is. don't forget about the bean dumplings for dessert. mmm....

Who offers the best Fried Pork Chop in the LA & OC vicinity?

i don't know if you're looking for "fried pork" (meaning tonkatsu) like the above poster mentioned, but if you're looking for "pork chop" as i understand it -

smothered pork chops from aunt kizzie's back porch in marina del rey are deeelicious.

Long lunch near LACMA tomorrow??

why don't you check out some of the ethiopian places on fairfax. the food always takes a long time to come out, so it's great for long leisurely lunches and it's good food. fun too. i go to "merkato" but others have their fav's.

Wilshire or Giorgio di Baldi?

giorgio is a very nice restaurant with fine food. keep in mind that it is very small. i went there with a party of ten for a birthday dinner and it was a bit cramped. i don't mind being cramped, but obviously some do.

LA MILL

Man I hate to say it but - Pretentious!

This is a prime example of people trying to gouge the lower middle class out of silverlake. Honestly the food is pretty good but what is it doing in Silverlake. I have lived here for about ten years and love the neighborhood for the value-for-dollar gems that give this city it's personality. Yuca's tacos, Taco's Delta, Alegria's, Madame Matisse for brunch, these are the types of places that distinguish this neighborhood from so many others. We don't live in Santa Monica because we don't want to get price gouged at Whole Foods - Of course now we get it from Gelson's (r.i.p. mayfair [also not cheap]). Some of the people that live here actually shop at Food For Less for produce not just because it's trendy but because it's cheaper.

I think when you open an experimental restaurant in Silverlake, you have the balls to try to make something that tastes amazing and is amazingly affordable - get some street cred by showing off how you don't need foil wallpaper and ten years ago modernist design to sell your food. all you need is tastebuds.
Compare this restauarant to Thomas Keller's Bouchon in Vegas - the prices are the same, if not more at LAmill. Where's the pretention at Bouchon? Maybe in playing along with the thematic desire of Vegas and opening a faux french bistro in a faux italian city but definitely not in the food. At LaMill? "maple-coffee-urfa chili creme fraiche"? Are you kidding me? That's straight off the menu. $3.50 for a croissant? I don't understand this at all.... Ok maybe they're $3.75 at Bouchon but we're talking Thomas Keller here and f-me if that wasn't the best croissant I've had outside of Paris. Seriously they're that good. I'll stop now. Just sort of offended by LaMill for some reason.

any reports on Little Dom's yet?

i had take out. italian wedding soup and baked rigatoni with sausage. the wedding soup was just o.k. - lots of escarole which is great, and it seemed fresh, but overall the soup had little to no flavor at all. even the meatballs were spongy and tasteless. almost like no one tasted it while cooking it. the baked rigatoni was just ok too. i thought the sausage was nice, but there was no tomato sauce at all in the dish. huh? is it just me or wouldn't one assume 'baked rigatoni with sausage' would have a little tomato in it? all in all i give it a 6/10. maybe the pizza is the way to go.

Okazu - ya in L.A.?

So I'm the kind of japanese that comes from hawaii, honolulu to be precise. There's a take-out place near Kahala called "Karyn's Okazu-ya" and it's the best ever. Hash patties, miso fish, shoyu chicken... etc.. Is there a place anywhere in l.a. that has this kind of food but done well? Torrance maybe, or Redondo Beach?

3-hour layover at LAX

there's a bar in playa del rey, i can't remember the name of it - but it's a ranch style building. nice atmosphere, very laid back, nice ocean air, decent food. crab legs seemed to be a big deal, lotta people were eating that. good beers, stella on tap.

whats the best cappuccino in all of LA??

gotta agree with luxxe on this one. i've only had the coffee at the 2nd street groundworks (read about the esmeralda - it was awesome) but i have had sabor, peets, pazzo gelato, and fritelli's. obviously my own opinion, but i have found the cappuccino at cafe luxxe to be one of the best i've ever had.
