Three new openings at Yonge & Lawrence--anyone been?
Oh I love Barakat in London. I went to school in London and I always felt that the only redeeming thing in that town is Barakat.
Diners, drive-ins and dives
I don't watch the show, but I think a big part of these kinds of places, is maybe not that food is the most original or outstanding, but the traditions and culture that surrounds the place.
Absolutely nothing special about Weber's?
I have to disagree. I think the line-ups that can stretch out the small hut housing the kitchen, and nearly up the overpass testify to the fact that those people think it's something special.

Heirloom tomato seedlings
Matchbox Garden and Seed company had a whole variety of heirlooms yesterday at the Trinity Bellwoods Farmer's Market. They looked lovely. Their website is www.matchboxgarden.ca
They'll be back at the market next week. It runs from 3-7pm at the northwest corner of the Park at Dundas and Shaw.
Savoury & Sweet Fondue Places
When I had the cheese fondue at biermarkt a few years ago, it was horrendous. I lived in Switzerland for a while, so my standards may be a little high. However, it was the consistency of alfredo sauce, too runny to stay on the bread. The flavours were hard to decipher, and it was a definitive disappointment> Not sure if it's changed since I had it last, but I would avoid it unless your idea of fondue perfection is getting stale brad to mop up the last of the sauce (from a jar) from a plate of fettucine alfredo.
mercatto downtown
I agree. I had only gone there for lunch before, and thought is a poor attempt at copying Terroni.
However, I went last week for dinner, and it was delicious! Fresh, well-balanced, tasty. In retrospect, I should have got pasta, but I got a striploin (I think) with a panzanella salad which was delicious. My friends had the special gnocci in a cream sauce with spinach and truffles (heaven!!!), the mushroom tagiatelle (also so good!) and the seafood spaghetti (didn't try).
It's very simple but very well executed. I would say that the menu is similar to terroni, but maybe has fewer unusual combinations for pasta. People may also find that it has a little less attitude than Terroni. I am a die-hard Terroni fan (maybe to the point of being an apologist), but was still impressed with the dinner at Mercatto.
Cava - Great Experience
Cava is one of my favourite restaurants. It's always different, tasty, and I am addicted to their churros. The service is always professional and friendly and the size of the restaurant is ideal.
My other favourites are the lime soup, octopus salad with hazelnuts and fingerling potatoes, the leeky-/onion-y things with romesco sauce. All so tasty!!!
But you really must have the churros!!
2009 closings
I think they're just renovating... I went by this week and the little pink elephant was lit up and there was a note on the window.
Kensington Market
I really love El Gordo's empanadas. They're about 3 dollars a pop and I can eat two and be stuffed. It's on Augusta.
