Bilbao, San Sebastian and environs

We wiized through Bilbao and San Se last year and stayed one night at the Miro Hotel across the street from the museum. It's a bit pricey but a very modern chique place with interesting rooms and fixtures. The breakfast was excellent but I can't recall if it was complementary. If you crave that sort of thing then this is a good choice.

I posed my question, above, because it was all too fast and we never ate a proper meal but if your stay is short you can more than survive on tapas. This year I'd like to spend a little more time in the area, hence my question regarding restaurants.

FWIW San Se is easier to navigate, more accessible, and the weather is better. Bilbao is tougher to figure out and thus seems to hold more possibilities. I may be wrong, but... I'm headed back to Bilbao.

Aside from tapas, which are beyond compare in the region, can anyone recommend some restaurants that won't break the bank?

Espresso Machines

I have owned an Olympia hand pump espresso machine for almost 30 years and unfortunately it's about had it. I'm looking at the Breville 830 and also the Pavoni (hand pump). I'm open to any and all suggestions. I'm trying to keep the price under $1,000.

Paderno of PEI any good?

Which Paderno are you referring to, Italy or PEI. I last bought my PEI Padernos in 1996. I have been to the factory and taken their tour. Their products are reasonably priced and excellent quality. I really doubt that other cookware has much more to offer.

Pizza and Pasta in Manville

Is anybody familiar with this place? I know of another Pizza and Pasta close by but am curious about this one. Not sure if it's actually in Manville but it's on 533.

Leg of lamb leftovers

My 2 cents: Broth, soup. Great stuff just skim fat and scum.

Downtown Phila Sunday Evening

Thanks. I guess I should add that I'm not that familiar with Philadelphia so approximate directions, addresses would help.

Downtown Phila Sunday Evening

The title just about explains it all. I'll be in the 400 block on Chestnut to meet an old friend at around 5. Looking for a comfortable inexpensive place to schmooz, eat light stuff like tapas and have a glass or two of wine. We don't mind walking so long as the weather is OK. Nothing fancy.

"Secret single foods"

Hormel's Corned Beef Hash cooked until its crispy.

Hard kosher salami cut into chunks.

There must be more. I'm so repressed.

Casual, Inexpensive, lunch/dinner for 10

I know this might be like the search for the holy grail but here goes: I've got several friends coming to town who would just like to sit around a table and eat, drink and talk for several hours without being rushed out the door. (Sort of cafe/bar/bistro like I suppose) Anywhere in Manhattan would be fine.

Favorite cooking word or phrase?

gribenhes (spelling, its a yiddish word). Those little leftover fried bits (brown bits!) of onion or anything else that's like a crumb, fried, savory. I not only like the word but we fight for the gribs.

What's the difference between a coffee shop and a diner?

The extent of the menu. Diners' go on for pages. A coffee shop is for sandwiches, maybe soup.

west village near angelika cozy tasty mod priced italian

This may not be much help but on the south side of Houston east of B'way, one or two blocks, there's a good red sauce place. Obviously I don't remember the name.

jacques pepin

Good to hear you're confident that Jacques will return, as for Daisy...pues...a bit too full of herself or perhaps Jacques is such a hard act to follow.

Bagels in the "old country," circa 2006

Is there a way to post photos to this board?

If not, Notre Dame des Champs, #12. 6th Arr. in Paris.

Unfortunately, not very good by NY standards. But the real question is why? Why buy a bagel in Paris? Bagels enriched the US bread selection while in Paris it really doesn't add much. (Not that I wouldn't enjoy one.)

Batali vs Flay

Babbo and Mesa Grill are realy not in the same league regardless of cuisine. I've enjoyed both but have to say that Babbo is the better dining experience even though one of the dishes I had (sausage and black pasta) was terribly over salted.

If you were Jacques P├ępin you would salivate too

Jacques is a real artist in the kitchen. I particularly like to watch his knife work. So fast. As he says: he's been in the kitchen for 55 years! His autobiography is also very good and I agree with the above, his 'technique' book is excellent. I'd like to see a full collection of his shows. And yes, he blows almost everyone else away.

Q: TV cooking/food programs you'd like to see

Jacques Pepin. Fast Food My Way. He's a true artist and not an elitist. Watch how he handles a knife. Listen to what he has to say about flavors and shortcuts and what to look for when buying certian items like mushrooms. He has a wealth of knowledge about all things in the kitchen and taste. And watch his face as he makes a sly joke.

Does anyone know if you can buy the tapes of him and Julia?
