is brennan's for brunch overrated?

Beware! I did the Brennan’s brunch when I first moved here and came out of it feeling like a complete sucker. Ridiculously expensive and very cheesy. Ever since I equate the “jazz brunch” experience to the Senor Frogs – Cabo experience, only with better booze and without a chubby Korean guy trying to feel you up under your overall shorts.

Daniel's on the Bayou?

Anyone know anything about it?

cochon, dick & jennys, or gautreaus? for our 2nd dinner in NOLA.

Funny...I would have said 1) Gautreaus, 2) Cochon, and 3) Dick and Jenny's.

Were the bad Gautreaus meals recent? I wonder if it was before their current chef came aboard. I've been to all three places and Gautreaus is definitely my favorite.

New Snowball Place on Freret- serves Real Fruit Juice

All weekend my husband and I lamented that there aren't enough cold drink beverage options in Nola, so I'd be really interested in finding a place that serves real juice. I'm sorry I can't help but will watch to see if anyone else does.

Fun place for cocktails and apps in Boulder, CO?

My friend is getting married in Boulder in Septemeber and I'm hoping to organize drinks and apps for a group of 7-10. I went to college in Boulder but haven't lived there in ten years so I'm not hip to what's new. Any suggestions?

1st Anniversary Dinner

Baru is moderately priced and BYOB, which always makes dinner cheaper. See my blog for a review: http://eatdrinknola.blogspot.com.

I haven't been to EAT yet but it's also BYOB and I've heard it's great, but based on the menu I saw online, it might be a bit to casual.

Of the restaurants you listed, I believe they're all more or less in the same price bracket except August, which I believe is a bit more expensive.

Happy anniversary!

Doberge Cakes in New Orleans?

I've never tried a doberge cake, but I have seen doberge cake ice cream at Creole Creamery, and they make fantastic ice cream cakes.

Where would you refuse to eat in NOLA even if your brother in law was paying?

Gato Negro across from the French Market. Long wait, atrocious food, overpriced.

Martinique Bistro

Crab cobb salad!!!

Rent a car?

Well, most of the places you listed are in the quarter, CBD, or the marigny, and for those you wouldn't need a car. Be aware that Divina Gelateria has a location in the quarter now, so you don't have to schlep over to Magazine.

However, if you plan to go to the Abita Brewery, you will definitely need a car. Cure, Parkway Tavern, and Franky and Johnny's are not within walking distance, nor would they be that easy to take the street car to.

Brocato's, La Divina, Gelato Pazzo, or Sucre?

I agree with N.O. Food - Creole Creamery is the best. So good it's habit-forming. But that's for ice cream. As far as gelato goes, I like Gelato Pazzo the best, although its atmosphere is the least enticing.

Crabby Jack's

Definitely worth a cab ride...their po boys are my favorite. I would not recommend walking though. It's on Jefferson Highway, which is not very scenic, and, well, a highway. Check the hours before you make the trek. I believe they're only open for lunch for a few hours.

affordable, romantic dinner with long-distance boyfriend?

Martinique has an outdoor patio that is pretty romantic at night. If you go, get the cobb salad. I've heard the flatiron steak is good too.

Tasty Breakfasts in the FQ & Marigny

I think the Marigny Brasserie does a good brunch:

If you can get past the touristy aspect of it, Palace Cafe also does a good one.

Bottarga via internet?

Thanks Will!

Dog-friendly in the French Quarter...

Bennachin (an African restaurant on 1212 Royal) once let me bring in my 32-lb pug, but I'm not sure that's common practice for them. For a casual lunch, La Divina Gelateria just opened up a location in Pirate's Alley (621 S. Peter) with outdoor seating. They serve deliciously simple paninis and gelati.

whelmed by Parkway, Central Grocery

I'm a Nola resident who just had my Parkway Tavern cherry broken this weekend, and I have to say I was also just whelmed. I've almost been afraid to write about it as it's such a po' boy go-to from what I've heard. Maybe it was just a bad day for Parkway, but the roast beef po' boy looked like it had been run over by a car before being served and I found the catfish to be dry, even with mayo and hot sauce. Like you, I enjoyed the service and ambience, but was left feeling like I was missing something with the po' boys.

NOLA elopement questions

Hi Jay,

After my Nola courthouse wedding we went to Stella. The food was excellent, I'd venture to say I had some of the best wine I've ever had, and it is a bit more upscale which would give your wedding night a nice sense of occasion. We were glad we chose it.

Here's their website:

Open VERY late or 24 hrs

It's hard to find a place that serves food past 2:00. The only one I know of is St. Charles Tavern. Yo Mama's has fantastic burgers, Cooter Brown's has oysters, and Squeal serves BBQ....all three open til 2:00 I believe.

Restaurants you wouldn't recommmend

I can't think of five, which I guess is a good thing. Only two really bad dining experiences stick out in my mind. I assume to make this list, the experience should be awful.

Jacque-Imo's
Gato Negro

which would you choose and why?

Two totally different atmospheres. Both are upscale but one is a tiny uptown house and the other is a very grand downtown affair.

I haven't been to Brigsten's, but I've heard it's great.

I found August to be a bit stuffy. I'm just not into the super fancy thing (I always feel a little silly when it's over the top). The food was incredibly flavorful but so rich that I felt sick afterwards. However, this was my fault for ordering the foie gras appetizer (which was amazing) and the duck entree. Went a little too big.

Bistro Daisy?

I made reservations at Bistro Daisy for a graduation dinner this weekend. Has anyone been there? Thoughts?

Bottarga via internet?

I live in New Orleans and am trying to figure out where I can buy bottarga. Does anyone know if it's sold locally and, if not, where I can buy it on the internet? Thanks!

Rambla, my new favoite restaurant

Menu is similar to that at Cesar but the atmosphere is definitely darker and more club-esque.
