Soul Food & Blues

Man, this is a killer combination. On Mondays Babe's & Ricky's In has a local talent open mike night with Micky Champion. And better than that the 10 dollar cover charge includes a sould food buffet. I'm not saying that the soul food is that spectacular, but I am saying the collard greens are pretty good and where else can you get corn pone? Soul food and blues music. Highway 10 to Crenshaw and then left into leimert park. Yeah! Hey anybody know another food website? one that is more underground and really about mom and pop joints, and cheap but more importantly Good food? Anybody got some discourse that isn't about pink berry or fathers office? or better yet debates about mozza? get me the real!

Mikes in Cotati is bomb. I just tried it for the first time today. Reasonable prices, not as cool as at the yard, but definatly a mean burger. Really top notch. I mean the best i have had in Norcal. grilled onions are key

Markets, festivals, special events

In Los Angeles there is El Mercadito a latino market in East LA with mariachis and food stalls, there is also Thai food stalls on random weekends at the Wat Thai temple in the valley, or a church in South Central that serves BBQ on Sundays.
Does anyone know similar attractions in the Bay AREA? Ethnic or regional markets or festivals? Neighborhood type deals? Im looking for foodstalls of any type of food, or markets with different products, and more exotic, or specific than 99 ranch. I want to crash the sort of events that no one is suppused to knoe about besides the community it is in, or just find some good cheap food. Thank you.

i'm looking for diners in industrial areas, taco trucks in parking lots, places you are scared to venture, unlikely and hidden store fronts, old tiki lounges, trucker or biker spots, dive bars with a good burger, strange combinations, down-home, or out of control. Give me your strange, funky, grimey and cheap. I want to throw together a real FOOD ADVENTURE that will take me somewhere I have never been, or never thought to go. I don't care how far away it is.it can be anywhere in Nor-Cal. Thanks. Places like (the now gone) Mike's at the yard in Petaluma...

The Office in Torrance

has anyone tried this place? It looks like a pretty sweet biker bar. Do they serve food? My friends wouldn't go in with me but it looked AWSOME. I forget what street it was on but I was right near 405 and 110. Let me know any info... thanks

lunch near UCLA

Westwood is pretty much a wasteland for food. Di Amore's pizza on Broxton is good. La Monicas on Gayley is a smaller place but the pizza can be good. You should probably go down Westwood Blvd. away from UCLA and at Pico go to The Apple Pan, or find something on the way like the persian or lebanese...

Portuguese Chicken Peri-peri Sauce?

Yeah the chicken and sauce also have their roots in Africa. Any African restaurants that are good?

Portuguese Chicken Peri-peri Sauce?

Anyone know where to get this garlicky, spicy, Portuguese chicken? If you are familiar with the Nando's chain in England this is the kind of thing I am looking for. If the sauce is that good at a chain and out of the bottle at the supermarket(I found the Nando's sauce at whole foods), I am prepared to be blown away... Thanks

Need rec's for good chow in Westwood for Thursday night dinner

Westwood has the worst value to good food ratio ever. An exception of Pizza.
Di Amore's Pizza on Broxton however, has some of the best pizza in LA
Lamonicas on Gayley is a close second
both of these places lack atmosphere, most good pizza does...
The philly cheese steak place on Broxton is good also but "westwood" prices same with damien and pithias which actually has a pretty good steak sandwich

Where did the taco cart with bomb al pastor at Vermont and Venice go?

I need some al pastor. I love taco trucks and carts, nut haven't had very good luck lately finding extremely good trucks or any that others have talked about. I usually go late at night around Pico vermont, 3rd, or Olympic and don't see much. My favorite truck lately has been la Tehuana (which isn't saying much. I tried to go a lot earlier today around 7:00 thinking there would be more taco activity but it was equivalent to my 1 in the morning carousings. Help a hound out. I've heard York is a hot spot, but anywhere closer to the Westside that I can count on?

Best Burger in Los Angeles

Well said, the burger question is a big one and the only way to attack it is to break it up into catagories. Cassels for me is champ. Its simple, relativly cheap and just phenominal. As for fast food, Fat Burger. Diner burger apple pan. Pie n burger is too far away and too overated. Philly West on Westwood just south of Santa Monica Blvd. is also extremely good, its my local hero

MOZZA review with photos.........

Do they offer a Marinara, or Nepolitana pizza, the one with no cheese and tons of garlic? God I could kill for one those. But man is 10 dollars the cheapest pie? It better fill me up, or I don't want it. Nothing worse than an "authentic pizza" that comes out real small and makes you feel gypt by foodie elitists.

Question about El Mercadito in East L.A.

Sundays are awsome. Everyone comes out and listens to the Mariachis, Cholos to old proud men in their cowboy hats and boots. Food is lame at the restaurants, eat in the stalls.

Any good Taco Truck streets or hot spots ?

Wow, I drove Olympic Blvd. I kept hearing how many trucks it had, but it was dead. I followed it way out into East LA and there were only warehouses and empty streets. This was between 12:00 and 2:00. Is that too late, too early?

Any good Taco Truck streets or hot spots ?

I'm looking for late night mexican food at stands, trucks, restaurants, or even just some dude with a bbq in a parking lot. Anything open past 12. I love to bomb around LA combing the streets.Tonite I drove from the 405 all the way up Pico/Olympic to downtown and then back down Venice blvd. There were some taco trucks, but not as many as i would have expected. I ended up actually driving to East LA near Whittier where the trucks were plentiful. WHERE ARE THE HOT SPOTS or streets that have a lot of Taco stands regularly at night? Do I have to go to NOHO, or near clubs? Is there anywhere, any neighborhood where their are so many options that you could take a walking tour?

Just Another El Parian Question

Hey, wow, This is king. I went around 8:00 and ordered the Carne Asada plate. Its the thing to order. At 11 bucks its a lot of food and a lot of meat. Cooked perfectly some red, some crispy. I could go on and on. Im going back tomorrow.

Nice, quiet restaurant in Westwood

There are some nice Persian Restaurants on Westwood between Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd. Extremely reasonable for lunch, but I think a little more expensive for dinner. I would stay out of Westwood Village (right next to UCLA) though, unless you like default places like cpk or bjs. Westwood Village is overprised and mostly subpar. Head South on Westwood Blvd.Oh yeah, and under NO circumstances even consider Gardens on Glendon.

Just Another El Parian Question

In my limmited experience El Parian does take the cake. Or I am pretty sure it does. I mean I went around 9:15 on a Wednesday night and the quality asada I got was a little off, and like it had been sitting around. They were actually trying to close as I walked in. Speaking of closed, god, the place looked completely wrapped up. I know other hounds have been fooled, but I truly thought it was abandoned until I went around back. Everything is perfect. The non descript look, the waitress, everything. JUST, WHAT TIME IS GOOD TO GO? When is it crowded? when is that meat just sizzling on the grill and filling the whole restaurant? All I know is I need to go back.

Also, a side note, has anyone tried the costillos (or whatever that huge hunk of meat with onions) at El Taurino? It looks bomb and like a lot of food for 12 bucks. Get back to me

Best bargain at Costco (or Sam's Club)?

The Kirkland brand Extra Virgen Olive Oil is the best kept secret at Costco. This stuff is the bomb. Completely unexpected and completely top end.

Great Place. Definalty a great find. The Burger was on the small side but was exactly what I was looking for. I will be a regular.

Yes, El Abejeno is great. Its much more like a place from Norcal. Also The Burger at Fathers Office on Montana in SM is legit, but very expensive(13.00). Zankou Chicken is overrated, and sterile. A great place for Persian food at lunch is Shimashuri (or something like that) on Westwood Blvd. near Wilshire across from Ross. Expensive at night.
