In Search of Great Olive Oil..

Oliana is a shop that sells nothing but olive oil. (along with some balsamic vinegars, etc)

It's in West Hollywood, on Santa Monica blvd and Robertson - part of the Pavillions complex.

Albano's on Melrose closed yet AGAIN???

Oh my god. Well, that might shed some light on why they were shut down.

I too was a big fan of their pizza (that is, before I read your post)

Albano's on Melrose closed yet AGAIN???

Albano's on Melrose re-opened to some fanfare a few months ago, this summer. Now it looks like they're already closed again!?! I spoke to a store owner next door. He says they got "shut down" for some reason, and he didn't think it's re-opening.

Is anyone able to confirm, or disconfirm this?

Savory donuts (other than the bacon maple donut at Nickel Diner)?

Best pho in Los Angeles proper

I wasn't terribly impressed with 9021 Pho. Expensive. Weak broth.

Best pho in Los Angeles proper

Despite the generic sounding name, Pho 36 is the very best in LA, in my opinion. It's on Western between 11th and 12th.

Italian Beef in SoCal

Got the Hots for Grilled Octopots!

As mentioned, Mozza's version is great.

But, strangely, it didn't taste all that octopus-ish to me, compared to a typical Greek version. Mozza's tasted almost beefy.

Coney Dog

MIke Binder's movies are like Passover seders: boring, seemingly endless, with the aftertaste of bitter herbs.

Don't go for Binder. As you are from Detroit, go for your fellow Detroiters Sam Rami and Red Wing Kris Draper, who are also part owners in the place.

The answer is obvious: Eleven in West Hollywood.

Coney Dog

Let us know!

Coney Dog

Swede, the chili would fall in the same general category as Tommy's or Pinks or Carney's, but better spiced and more unctuous. The ingredients seemed to me to be better quality. In the loose burger, I could taste the freshness of the beef -- very "beefy" - which contrasted wonderfully with the more complex flavor of the chili.

Coney Dog

reality check, I think yelp has some bad info. It already opened. I was just there.

Coney Dog

This is a new place that serves "Detroit style" chili dogs. They call them "coneys".
Whatever they call them, they're the BEST chili dogs I've had in Los Angeles, hands down. Really, really DELICIOUS.

The chili had this fantastic, kinda-greek spiced flavor. I also had the loose burger, which is fried up ground beef in a hot dog bun, covered with the chili. Sounds weird, but I liked it even better than the hot dog.

It's located on Sunset and San Vicente, on the Sunset Strip.

Anyone else try it?

The closest I know of is Joe's Stone Crab in Vegas.

Tom Colicchio Visits!

"Is the guy's visit to his own place something to celebrate?"

That literally made me laugh out loud.

Review: Langer's Delicatessan - Los Angeles

"Milchig on your fleishig? What's to stop the mayo and white bread from coming next?"

I agree! As far as I'm concerned Russian dressing IS mayonnaise!!

Best Fried Rice in LA!!!

Which Phoenix is this?

Mr. Beef of Chicago - Venice boardwalk

If it was too dry, ask them to dunk the sandwich in the au jus. So good...

Yeah, the set-up there is hilarious! The Mr. Beef guy has this tiny, tiny kitchen, and he has to share it with another guy, who works at a completely different restaurant, but in the same exact space! And what's crazier, is that the other guy is also making sausages, just like Mr. Beef. So two restaurants are together in the same tiny food stand, serving two different sausages from one kitchen through two different windows.

They asked me if I wanted it dipped. But they called it "juicy". "Do you want it juicy?"

I tried an Italian beef last week with the giardiniera. It was REALLY good.

Nick's Cafe ... best hash browns ever.

Home fries are the breakfast potatoes. It's the dish that looks like potatoes au gratin, minus the au gratin.

Thick cubed potatoes with onions and peppers are usually labeled as potatoes o'brien.

Blue Plate Oysterette opening on Ocean Ave. In Santa Monica next month.

They will make it either with or without mayonnaise. See link below:

Best Koreatown Market for Live Dungeness Crab?

3.99 is a steal. I will absolutely have to check that out!

On Sumo's recommendation I bought some at Assi market for, I believe, 6.99 per pound. They were very good.

Also saw some live dungeness crabs at the Korean supermarket on Olympic just west of Vermont. Also 6.99 a pound there. The crabs are located inside a display on the main floor. The seafood guy will pull each crab out so the customer can take a look up close and decide if that's the one they want.

Best Koreatown Market for Live Dungeness Crab?

Thanks. Those places might be exactly what I'm looking for.

Best Koreatown Market for Live Dungeness Crab?

Any recommendations for a Koreatown market where I can buy live Dungeness Crabs? Thank you.
