Indonesia Mini Market - Indonesian Home Cooking in Central London
Ah ok, that makes sense. Thanks for letting me know.
Indonesia Mini Market - Indonesian Home Cooking in Central London
I went today for lunch - only £4 for a bowl of delicious meatball noodle soup. The meatballs' meat was obviously very cheap (kind of spongy) but everything else was delicious and the guy who owns it/runs it was really friendly. He asked me how I knew about it and I explained about Chowhound. It's definitely an excellent find right in central London. Thanks!
[London] - Handmade Noodles
I love Lanzhou-style noodles. I've eaten them in the US and China, but barely here. Outside of Noodle Bar on Cranbourn Street, are there any other cafes or not-fancy restaurants (I'm a student on a budget) in London (preferably central/North/East) where I can go get a bowlful of these?
Thanks lots,
Haverfoodie.
[London] Drummond Street Restaurants
Hi all,
I'm spending a lot of time in the Euston area at the moment and am wondering about the South Indian places on Drummond St. They're pretty ignored on this board, so maybe I'll just do a schlep through them over the next few weeks. Are any of them particularly good? I'm a big East Ham fan and it would be incredibly handy to have South Indian closer than zone 3/4.
Thanks lots.
London in April on a budget
There's a Greek Orthodox church near Hampstead Heath, at 1 Gordon House Road. Not a foodie tip (Hampstead's a bit beyond my budget), but if it's nice weather then you could go to church and then onto the Heath (a short walk, going in at either the Gospel Oak or Parliament Hill entrances.
Meat Liquor - Prices? [London]
Hi,
I'm trying to decide whether or not to go to Meat Liquor tomorrow night. Before I queue for hours, I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of the prices? No review seems to list prices (standard), but some have listed it as cheap but then say a meal for two cost over £50, which isn't cheap in my book. So how much are the burgers and wings? Ball-parks figures only.
Thanks.
buying konjac noodles in london
If you're looking to buy the noodles to eat, go to the baozi stall at the top of Newport St in Chinatown on the left.
Compiling a list of ethnic enclaves in London
Thanks for the info on Seven Sisters indoor market - I just went there today and had some excellent arepas con queso.
ISO Goat's Curd [London]
This Guardian recipe (http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/oct/12/tagliatelle-figs-goats-curd-recipe) calls for goat's curd but I don't even know where I would begin looking for it. I live in Finsbury Park and really want to make this dish but don't want to travel too far. So if you know somewhere, please let me know!
Thanks.
Indian Supermarkets in North London
I have just moved to Manor House and need a bunch of South Asian spices/ingredients. I don't know the area well at all and am pressed for time, otherwise I would go out and just have a wander or schlep down to Sarf Landan. Does anyone know a good Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi supermarket in the vicinity. Somewhere in Finsbury Park, Manor House or Green Lanes would be perfect.
Thanks lots.
Saturday lunch in Finsbury Park [London]
Is it Turkish? What sort of food is it? When I type Diyarbakir into google it auto-suggests Diyarbakir Prison.
Saturday lunch in Finsbury Park [London]
I'm moving to Finsbury Park/Manor House and want to go out for a big lunch with my parents. We are adventurous eaters who like a variety of cuisines. I've done some research on chowhound and the internet in general, and I've come up with: Little Sardegna, Il Baccio, Dotori and Chez Liline as possibilities although I'm very interested in other places to eat, too.
There are some conditions:
The restaurant must be walkable (I live between the tube stations)
My mum is a coeliac so there need to be multiple things that don't contain gluten for her to eat.
No more than £20 per person (before drinks and tip).
The restaurant needs to be open for lunch.
Is Chez Liline still worth it? I've read a mixed bag of reviews. As neither of my parents like sushi, should I eliminate Dotori from the list?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks all.
ISO Millionaire's Shortbread
Nothing? No one seen this at a bakery or even a supermarket?
ISO Millionaire's Shortbread
I have a friend who's dying for some millionaire's shortbread (shortbread covered with a thick layer of caramel then a layer of chocolate and cut into squares). Any idea where he can get some? He's wiling to travel the length and breadth of NYC to find some. All suggestions are much appreciated.

terrible restaurant names
There's a Chinese takeaway in Clapham called Hoover. And in terms of cheesiness, there's a cupcakery (awful word) called Cake That near me.
[Manchester, city centre] Habesha
If you're interested in even better Ethiopian and willing to travel to Moss Side for it, I'd highly recommend Merhaba on Claremont Rd. It's absolutely delicious, the owner/cook is lovely, and incredibly cheap. Really worth travelling a couple of miles out of the city centre for.
Moving from NYC to London
At the Popes Road end of Brixton Market, there's a Colombian butchers called Las Americas that sells Colombian snacks (fresh arepas, papas rellenas etc) and cuts of meat. It's food. Just up the road in Brixton Village Market (the covered market), there are a couple of Colombian cafes - Restaurante Santa Fereño is one and I don't remember the name of the other. Stockwell also has a lot of Latin American and Iberian cafes and food.
Birmingham - Curry, please
Any good curry recommendations in Birmingham that will be open for Sunday lunch?
Nothing fancy - just looking for some tasty Indian/Pakistani food, possibly along the lines of Manchester's curry cafes.
Thanks.
Manchester Restaurants near the University?
There aren't really any good restaurants right round Manchester University (or around Man Met Uni either). However, Manchester Uni is under a mile away from Rushholme, and some of the restaurants there are good. It's also a mile away from the centre of town, and then you have access to a lot more places.
I'm not sure about the Whitworth museum's opening hours, but the cafe there is really good (lots of local and fresh ingredients made into tasty dishes) if you could swing a business lunch rather than dinner.
Zouk (on Chester St) is liked by a lot of people and is nearish to the University (nearer to Man Met) and definitely has more of a casual business dinner feel.
Red Chilli is pretty much opposite the University and produces good quality Szechuan food. In a similar vein, there's Chilli Cool and Red n Hot (in Chinatown) and Middle Kingdom (on Princess St).
In town, depending on how much you want to spend, there's Luso, El Rincon de Rafa, the Mark Addy (probably won't be able to get a table now that Jay Rayner's reviewed it) and others. Chorlton and Whalley Range (easily reachable by car and bus) have some great places, too, but might be a bit further afield than you're looking for.
Manchester / Leeds - anyone out there?
The Londoners on this board get all the fun (I'm jealous of the Brixton Market meet-up today). Would a Manchester meet-up be possible? If so, where would people want to experience?
Manchester / Leeds - anyone out there?
I live in Manchester and I write about cheap and delicious (and usually ethnic) food in Manchester. There's a lot of really great food in Manchester, but a lot of people don't know about it. I spend quite a bit of time in London, too, and I really wish that our markets up here had more cafes along the lines of those found at Brixton market.
I'm always on the lookout for food that's a bit more unusual than bog-standard Indian/Pakistani/Chinese, and I would recommend the curry cafes in the Northern Quarter and Cheetham Hill (especially Yadgar in the NQ and Top Quality in Cheetham Hill) for cheap and stand-out curries, kebabs, and Sunday lunch nihari. Down in Burnage (easily reachable by the 50 bus and the train) there's a South Indian called Sindhoor that makes really delicious food. Dosas, curries, fish dishes, and all totally different from the usual Curry Mile stuff. There are two Ethiopian cafes in Moss Side on Princess Parkway that I keep meaning to visit, and there's a lot of great Caribbean food round there and in Trafford. These places (Dougies and Kool Runnings are my favourites probably) are mostly take-aways or have one table, which can make things trickier. I'm also trying to find good West African - Ghanaian in particular, but have so far had little luck. And I am always always always on the look-out for Latin American food that isn't the meat-off-a-stick type like Bem Brasil.

Cost of London dining
I echo all of NorthernFood's suggestions and want to add a couple more.
For lunch, I really recommend a cafe called The Farm. It does incredibly cheap sandwiches piled high with free-range roast pork (£2.50) , plus venison and artisanal sausages for similar prices. The owner is lovely. The cafe (which has very limited seating) shuts whenever the pork runs out.
Caribbean food - there are a bunch of places in and around Moss Side (which is very easily reachable from Rushholme, and although it has a bad reputation, I have never had a problem walking around there) that all do very good, very filling, very cheap lunches and dinners. Seating is usually limited, though.
Northern Quarter curry cafes: In addition to NorthernFood's suggestions, I'd recommend Kabana for kebabs. If you have the opportunity, you should try and go to the cafes on a Sunday when they do nihari. These guys can give you more extensive recommendations: http://flavoursofmanchester.blogspot.com/
Soup Kitchen is also open later on I think Thursdays and Fridays, and their breads, soups and other dishes are all uniformly delicious.
There's a very good and cheap Vietnamese place just beyond the Northern Quarter called Vnam Cafe. Huge bowls of pho, large amounts of barbecued meats and plenty of other stuff available for around £6-8 per person.
I have a blog where I review cheap and interesting food in Manchester (http://mancfoodian.blogspot.com/) so as I review more places between now and the summer, that might be helpful.
Good luck!

[Manchester] Latin American
Having discovered Colombian food in London and eaten a huge amount of it in and around Brixton Market over the past month, I'm looking to either be able to get hold of similar food in Manchester or make my own.
I know about all the Brazilian meat-on-a-stick places that have sprung up recently, but I'm really looking for Latin American (not too bothered from where, although would love to keep eating Colombian food) cafes and food shops. I'm especially looking for the masarepa (pre-cooked corn meal) needed for making arepas.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks.
South Indian food in Manchester / elsewhere in the North
I love South Indian food and I've been trying to find South Indian in Manchester for the last couple of years. Sindhoor is pretty excellent (or at least it has been when I've been there), but I think Punjab in Rushholme sort of coasted along on being the only place to get a dosa for too long. If you find other places, please post them here.
London - Cheap eats in Harrow/Harrow-on-the-Hill
Thanks to chowhounds, I've spent the last week eating delicious food near my new place of work. I'm going to be visiting friends for the weekend who have just moved to Harrow. They both like things that are cheap, cheerful and delicious, but they don't know where to get them. Do any of you? All recommendations are much appreciated.
Thanks.
London - Cheap Lunches around Farringdon Tube Stop
I'm going to be temping right near the Farringdon tube stop for a couple of weeks. I'm looking for cheap places to eat lunch (under £6, nothing too heavy). I'm planning on checking out the tandoori sandwiches at Delhi Grill (about a mile away - my maximum distance for walking on my lunch hour), but other than that I don't know what other options there are. I've searched the boards, but nothing's cropping up. Anyone know any good places for soup, salad, sandwiches etc?
Thanks.
Shabu-Shabu in Philadelphia?
I can't remember if they did burritos, but Los Gallos (951 Wolf St) way down in South Philly does incredible Mexican food.
London - Lunch Suggestions
My parents (one of whom is a coeliac) will be in London for the Gauguin exhibition. They want to get lunch (max £20 per head) either nearish (they have zone 1&2 travelcards) to Euston or the Tate Modern. I've looked at previous posts but nothing seemed to leap out. Any suggestions? Thanks lots.
