The Shepherd's Profile

NW Seafood

I am a little surprised reading the other comments. All good restaurants (and sorry about the bad Canlis experience - love that place), but for great, inventive seafood you have to stick with Blueacre. Best of the bunch, and can handle a large table with no problem. Just took some out of town guests there to dinner last week and blew them away. Be sure and order a couple of extra appitizers to share with the table.

Restaurants Recs Needed

I agree with Leper, but would add Blueacre to the list (sister to Steelhead). Went there last night for the first time and am pretty high on them right now. Also for a fun single place you should try 13 Coins, one of Seattle's longest running places. Decent food, sit at the bar in front of the cooks; lots of fun.

In Chicago November 4 - 7

Will be staying at the University Club on Millinium Park. Where within walking distance do we find the best "authentic" Chicago food? Breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Sea - Places you want to hate

After this I will need a fake name for my fake name. . . Fred Myer Mac and Cheese. I have tried EVERY Mac and Cheese from the Lobster at Purple, to Beecher's and Freddy's beats them all. I am so ashamed, must wash....

Best liquor stores in SEA

Spot on Steve. Can someone please reply as to why Washington State is still in this business?

Here is a good example, I was in CA a few months back and stopped at Costco; bought a couple half gallons of Tanq. Gin for 25$ each. They sell for 45 each here. Could our state not tax so that they come out the same, but allow Costco, or whomever else to sell and make their (obvious) profit at 25$? I know this is not a political web site, but haven't wars been fought over booze and food before?!!!

Most Overrated Restaurant in Seattle

Wine my friend. When the food is terrible go for the wine!

Seattle wedding caterers

Landau's in Redmond. Great food of any type, and David Landau (Jewish) gets the whole kosher thing. Can't go wrong.

Most Overrated Restaurant in Seattle

Best pizza (still) in Seattle is Olympia on top of Queen Anne. Why would you go anywhere else?

Most Overrated Restaurant in Seattle

The WORST meal I have ever had in Seattle is Daniel's on Lake Union. Out of seven people, one steak undercooked with veins the size of arteries, one so overcooked you could play hockey, meals presented 5 minutes apart (seven people, half hour to get everything to our table), two meals were just plain wrong - if you don't have an idetic memory then just write it down! It really is ok to use a pen and paper. And all for just under 1,500 dollars! I will NEVER go back, I will tell everyone in the world that this is by far the worst place ever. RUN do not walk from Daniels on Lake Union.

One night in Sacramento

I will be passing through Sacramento this Friday evening and need one exceptional dinner. What is the best of the best in Sacremento?

Want Novelty Hill Soup Recipe

Went to the Novelty Hill winery last week for a reception and was blown away by some of the food. Two great things; first, the pizza - true Italian, very thin crust, not a lot of stuff on top. Second, the soup - Unbelievable!! It was a Celery root and Jerusalem artichoke bisque, served as an appetizer in a small demi tas cup. Does anyone out there have the recipe? I WILL PAY TOP DOLLAR!!! OK, I'm kidding about that, but I will be eternally grateful.

The winery is beautiful, and it was nice to see that they take their food as serious as the wine. Nicely done.

Wedding: 100 guests seated luncheon in DC

What about some of the art galleries or museums? I was thinking of my all time fav the Phillips off Dupont Circle, I wonder what they could do. Wouldn't that be a beautiful venue?

Chinese food in Seattle

Another place to try dum sum on the eastide is Jeem, although they were closed last week for renovations. Looks like a little hole in the wall, next to the Safeway on 24th (Overlake Neighbourhood). It stacks up pretty well against the others you mentioned. Now I'm hungry and want to leave work :)

Pike Place Market - Best Spot for Breakfast?

You will love Steelhead. Be sure someone in your party orders the Gumbo . . . to die for!

Wedding: 100 guests seated luncheon in DC

That is why you need someone who is already a member to sponser your event! They do it all the time there. And yes, they can do Kosher. You probably know a lot of members, just don't know it. If I were living in DC I would sponser your wedding, Mazal Tov!

Hot sauce factories—anyone ever been to one?

Two great tours I went on; one, the Kellog's tour where you got to see the corn flakes plop down onto a conveyor best (1976), the smell was horrific, couldn't eat corn flakes for years. The second tour was the Labrot and Grahm distillory outside of Lexington, KY. Very cool, very informal they let me stick my finger in the sour mash and taste it right out of the vat!

Pike Place Market - Best Spot for Breakfast?

I know people think Lowell's is touristy, but jeez, we are talking about the market here; that screams touristy! So in for a penny in for a pound.

Nice, slightly upscale restaurant in DC

Are you in downtown, or outer areas? If it is downtown, I think you would enjoy Old Ebbitt Grill; good food, will fit your price range, and is "active" enough that your kids will be distracted. Your 6 year old will love all the old stuff on the walls.

Driving North From San Luis Obispo

Our plan is to leave early Friday morning, so breakfast in SLO, driving north on 101 to San Jose, and cutting over (as you so kindly pointed out) to I-5. My hope is to make it to Ashland that evening for dinner. Lunch would be in Sacramento area.

My northwest Hounds gave me some good ideas for Dinner and Breakfast in Ashland. I need breakfast in or around SLO and lunch further north.

My wallet feels more like pure bred stallions, rather then Mustangs!

I do have two nights in SLO before heading north, so any food thoughts for there would also be appreciated. My favorite restaurant in SLO is Novo, and I have eaten at the nice little Italian place by the theatre, although it is hard to get into. Any other thoughts?

Woodinville Wine Trip

May I suggest Novelty Hill Winery. Good wine, incredible facilities. Won an AIA award for design (interior) and also has great landscape architecture.

Driving North From San Luis Obispo to Seattle

Thank you. Ashland it is.

One more tea rant.

I eat Chinese ALOT, and I have never thought to ask what teas are available. I just sit down and a pot appears. HUH, have to re-think my entire life now.

Driving North From San Luis Obispo to Seattle

So you would stay Ashland rather then Medford? I only picked Medford because it is about half way home. Not real scientific, any other places to stay?

Pike Place Market - Best Spot for Breakfast?

I believe it is spelled Lowell's, and I would recomend it. Good food, GREAT views, and really what the market is all about. We have been taking out of town guests there for years, they all love the "rough and tumble" atmosphere. And they really do have darn good crab eggs benny.

Driving North From San Luis Obispo to Seattle

I am flying down to San Luis Obispo in June to pick up my daughter from college and drive back north to Seattle. I will probably take the 101 north from SLO to San Jose, then cut over to I-5 and head on up to Seattle. We will need breakfast lunch and dinner. Food thoughts on our trip north?

I did cross-post this on the California Chowhound, figuring they could get me to the California border. I need my fellow NW chowhounds to get me from the Oregon border to Seattle. Probably spend a night in Medford - unless there is some incredible food experiance close by.

As to food, we will try anything (I am the nut who posted the love sonet regarding Lutefisk). So the more "experimental" the better!

Hot sauce factories—anyone ever been to one?

I have always wanted to go to the Tabasco factory. I believe it is on an Island off the coast of Louisiana. Can you imagine how bad your eyes must water? Has anyone been there? I would love to hear about it.

One more tea rant.

Thank you lucyis. As you can tell by my post above, I am not a tea drinker (other then the obligatory Chinese restro tea, where there is never a choice). But I have friends, who have a restro and they are always trying to please tea drinkers, by offering a multitude of teas. I think they would be better served to offer a black and possibly a decaf that is very high quality. What brands would you (and the other zillion writers) suggest if they could only serve those two teas? And what brand of tea kettle gets the water to the correct temp?

Lutefisk

There used to be a small Swedish restaurant across the street from Olsen's in Ballard, but the vanished. They offered true Swedish Pancakes with lingonberries (unlike those places that serve fake "lingonberry butter" whatever that is), potato sausage, and of course lutefisk.

I don't know about having a Lutefisk dinner in July, could you imagine the smell with the summer heat? You and I should touch base closer to the Holidays and organize a true Yule Smogesboard. I will even make my famous homemade potato sausage!

Lutefisk

I buy it to make at home at Olsen's. I was hoping there were restraunts that would serve it. I am the only person in my house who eats it (I wonder why?), so making it at home is a pain.
