Rapini

I made rapini for the first time and was disappointed with the results. How should rapini taste when prepared? I found it to be very bitter, almost inedible. I sauted the bunch, trimmed of the thick bottom stems and large leaves in a little butter, olive oil and kosher salt until tender. My family loves broccoli and I thought they would also like this, but no one could get past the bitterness. Any help would be appreciated!

Do some families really do this?

Friday night in our house was always pizza night, Mom got a break from the kitchen and us kids got a treat. Sunday was spaghetti night with Dad making the sauce loaded with onions, peppers and lots of garlic. My brother and I are both in our late 30's and not long ago I called him on a Sunday and we laughed over the discovery that we had each made "Dad's Spaghetti" for our families for dinner. Some things never change!

After school snack memories

So after staying up way too late last night reading the post on Mom's cooking, it got me thinking about what my Mom would serve for after school snacks. I vividly remember coming home and hoping for the best and many times getting the worst: my older brother was put on the Feingold diet for hyperactivity during my early school years and because of his restrictions (no sugar, no chocolate and no artifical colors or flavors) there was always some 'fake' chocolate/carob type cookie that left a strange aftertaste, or if we were lucky, 'natural' peanut butter that had to be stirred for ages to make it come back together, spread on a piece of bread. What was waiting for you when you got home?

What's the best bakery in Chicago for sweets?

ivhkitty, you are so right on about Webers! The best cakes ever and the sauerkraut bread is the stuff I dream of! Makes me want some now!

Cucumber Ideas

My go-to salad when cukes are in season is very thinly sliced (salted and drained) mixed with sour cream and tons of fresh dill, salt and pepper to taste. This salad is always requested for parties and everyone seems to love it. Sometimes we add a shallot that has been minced.

Deerfield's in Schaumburg

Hi all,
Need some guidance regarding Deerfield;s Bakery in Schaumburg. My wonderful mother-in-law routinely treats my family to a host of items from this bakery but lately we have noticed a startling drop in taste and quality. Anyone else have the same experience? The last time we tried the apple slices they had the most bizzare spongy texture. Does anyone have recomendations for another bakery in that area, or we just picking the wrong items?
