High Tea Menu Help Please
If you have to, freeze the dough instead of the cooked scones. Also, I'm guessing these will be miniature sized scones for the young ones, so you can put quite a few onto one baking sheet. Is it possible to begin earlier than the 45 minutes in advance? Baking up all the scones that afternoon seems like it would be pretty rushed...
Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now?
right now, an apple cinnamon rice cake and some peppermint tea. i've been trying to drink tea (multiple varieties) throughout the day to help increase my fluid intake.
High Tea Menu Help Please
I've never hosted a tea, but enjoyed reading through the replies on this thread for new ideas for things to munch on/serve with tea for myself, at any time of day.

what to serve with baked beans
buttered toast. the pork and ribs and other suggestions all sound good, as well. but i love some buttered toast (or cornbread) with baked beans!
Are You Snacking on Anything Right Now?
cinnamon sugar graham crackers sound so yummy right now. i haven't had them in so long. i always loved them alongside raspberry herbal tea.
i'm still lazing around, watching tv and browsing CH in bed, but may get up for some dark chocolate petit ecolier cookies and stash moroccan mint tea (mostly because i was just thinking about the graham crackers with raspberry tea so i need to make do with what i've got)
What did you have for breakfast today?
Today, leftover chocolate chip banana bread and English breakfast tea. Twas a lazy Sunday morning and unfortunately was not able to visit my mama, as she lives a 5-hour drive away and I had to work this weekend.
For tomorrow -- I do have some Liberte yogurt in the fridge that needs eating, although I'm not usually a weekday breakfast person.
Uses for fig jam
Thanks for all the suggestions, all! This wasn't my post but I also recently obtained a jar of fig preserves. I've been eating it with brie and crackers so far, but have gotten some more great ideas here. Methinks a peanut butter and fig jam sandwich will be on the menu this week... The jam tart also looks great (I have a lot of open jars of jam in my fridge).
Potato Chip Afficionado
Glad to see another Tim's fan! I just scrolled through all the replies to see if anyone had mentioned this Northwest brand. When I was in grad school in VT, I would ask for care packages full of Tim's chips from back home in Seattle -- actually, what I really am obsessed with is their Hawaiian kettle style line. The luau BBQ chips are divine, but I'm also a huge fan of the Tim's original and jalapeño flavors, and many others love the salt and vinegar. There is also a good cheddar flavor, if i remember correctly. Thick and crunchy and very potato-y.
When I was in VT, I also liked Utz and Cape Cod. Miss Vickie's are very good as well.
P.S. in checking the Tim's website after seeing this thread, it looks like their Hawaiian kettle style line has a new flavor -- mango habanero! I haven't seen these yet in the store (I'm in Oregon now) but I'll be keeping my eye out.
Kozy Shack rice pudding - copy cat recipe?
Thanks for bringing this thread up again. For the past two weeks I've been obsessed with kozy shack rice pudding (out of nowhere!) and have been thinking that I'd like to try a homemade version.
Favorite unusual toppings for vanilla ice cream?
i can vouch that olive oil on either chocolate or vanilla ice creams is incredible. even better with lemon zest and/or flaky sea salt. NOMS.
How are meals served in your home?
Growing up, my family always had dinners together (me, 3 brothers, 2 parents, grandparents from my mom's side) and it was always family style. The house I grew up in had the dining nook in the kitchen and we always ate there for regular daily meals. Those usually consisted of rice, meat dish with or without veggies, soup with the same veggies and/or meat, and occasionally a separate veggie dish. And leftovers from the night before, which was a different combo of meat and veggies and soup. Frequently had fish sauce on the side for dipping if the meat was boiled and sliced plain, but not if it was in a stir fry or dish with a braising liquid.
We had a dining room that was rarely used, only if we had meals with extended family and we couldn't all fit into the kitchen. Then, the aunts and uncles who arrived first usually sat in the kitchen and helped with food prep and serving, and everyone else ate all over the house -- in the living room, family room, dining room, and on the stairs using their knees as a table. Those meals were much more elaborately prepared but served buffet style. No meals were ever plated or served as separate courses.
Nowadays, I'm living alone so when I'm eating evening meals at home, I usually plate in the tiny kitchen then eat on my couch in front of the TV. I live and work in the same area so when I come home for lunch, I more frequently eat at my dining table while reading a magazine, checking my phone, or once in a while without any distraction. When the bf is over, we usually eat in front of the TV. Dessert, if we are having it, is the only thing that is served as a separate course, and it's usually ice cream.
What's for Dinner #142 [old]
Smitten kitchen has a lovely recipe for "silky cauliflower soup" that does not use potato. I have made cauliflower soups with and without potato and they have all come out delicious -- it mostly just depends on whether I have enough cauliflower or if I have extra taters to use up. If I'm making pureed soups, I usually strain them to get out the lumps and bumps and for the smoother texture.
Simple Recipes that are Incredibly Delicious!
roasted veggies in general are a revelation for me. i only recently discovered roasted cauliflower, roasted brussel sprouts, and roasted cabbage.
i just roasted 2/3 of a bunch of asparagus and gobbled it up by myself, since i was too lazy to cook a real dinner. i sliced up a shallot and that went onto the pan as well. near the end of the cooking time, i added the balsamic so it would caramelize, then sprinkled with parm when it all came out of the oven.
What's your favorite bedtime snack?
lately? peanut butter and nutella, straight from their respective jars. sometimes biscoff spread too.
other times, cereal and milk; sardines or tuna on crackers; almond-stuffed olives from the jar; leftovers; chips; and ice cream. i go through phases for late night cravings. i was re-reading quinoa recipes today and might make a batch which will invariably turn into lunch and midnight snacks for a week.
Canned Baked Bean Makeover
Out of curiosity, what does your usual doctoring up consist of? I have a costco pack of baked beans but haven't gotten tired of them yet (I'm only 2 cans in).. but I'd like to step it up a little bit to see how you eat them without the complete repurposing.
Food that Most People Love and You Don't...
tiramisu
cheesecake
red velvet cake, especially in cupcake form
most alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, and hard liquor
pancakes - i prefer waffles, will make do with french toast... pancakes are meh
raw tomatoes
avocados
cooked fish (salmon in particular -- i'm from seattle and people are appalled that i won't eat salmon) but weirdly enough, i do enjoy small amounts of salmon sashimi... and i will eat canned sardines and tuna
spaghetti (i think it's mostly the sauce)
most chain pizzas -- i like breadsticks from almost any chain though; again, i think it's the sauce
Peanut Butter -- how do you eat it (and on what kinds of different foods)?
my parents eat this every morning. a bowl of quaker rolled oats with a scoop of jif creamy peanut butter on top. i never thought it was unusual when i was growing up. now i realize that not too many people do this...
also, i recently discovered a new delicious sandwich of pb and sprouts. possibly with a thin layer of mayo beneath the pb.
Condiments and Eggs
i'm not filipino but i loooooove jufran. the original, not the spicy kind. if i want it spicy, i'll just add some sriracha. sometimes also mixed with ketchup. on eggs is good. on eggs with spam and rice is better. with tyson chicken nuggets is also delicious.
canned sardines for a newbie
very weird sounding, but i'd try a can if i saw them in the store. how did you eat them?
Recipes from Smitten Kitchen blog.....what are your favorites??
Hands down, the recipe I make most often from smitten kitchen's archives are her buttermilk blue cheese drop biscuits: http://smittenkitchen.com/2010/04/blue-cheese-scallion-drop-biscuits/. I don't even use blue cheese, I sub cheddar and a mix of whatever else I have on hand -- this often turns out to be half cheddar, half ricotta.
I also make the "best cocoa brownies" regularly since I tend to have cocoa on hand for quick treats more than good quality chocolate... and it's easier to measure out cocoa powder than melting chocolate on the stove.
Strawberry shortcakes. Zucchini fritters. Basic pizza crust. Tomato sauce with onion and butter. Red wine chocolate cake. Lemon yogurt anything cake. Cauliflower gratin. Silky cauliflower soup. All the cookies (especially the key lime meltaways, the russian tea cakes, brown butter brown sugar shorties, and the oatmeal, chocolate, pecan oatmeal cookies)
Basically, I love everything I've ever made from her blog. It is my go-to for most items. I love the blog layout, the photography, the writing... and the recipes!
Unsalted butter + salt ???
it's so you can control the amount of salt in your own cooking. there are different amounts of salt in different brands of salted butter so you won't know how much salt you're adding to your food.
however, i'll say that i have successfully subbed salted butter to a number of recipes and just made a guess of how much added salt to reduce by (usually i'll guesstimate between 1/4-1/2 tsp) and things have turned out fine. maybe my palette just isn't refined enough to be able to tell.
Cookie recipe or any recipe w/ nonfat yogurt?
i've never tried it using nonfat yogurt, but perhaps ina garten's lemon yogurt cake might work? it's delicious with full-fat yogurt...
also, are you using nonfat plain yogurt?
It's Girl Scout cookie season!!
thin mints and samoas. will eat some at room temp as soon as i buy them and stick the rest in the freezer for portion control and for extra deliciousness.
Guilty Pleasure
*ditto fingers* on the disgusting but delicious nacho cheese sauce. half the reason i go to baseball games in the spring (the other half is for garlic fries). although i could also drink the tostinos queso sauce from the jar. i guess i just like fake cheese product.
movie theater popcorn with tons of "butter"... i've gotten great at portion control with most things, but if i get popcorn at the movies, i'll still eat so much to give myself a stomachache. also delish with an icee on the side -- blue raspberry or coke flavor.
teeth-achingly sweet sugary kids cereals, most kinds. if my bf is grocery shopping with me, he'll pick up a box and i end up eating at least a couple bowlfuls, with milk or dry as a snack. i also eat tons of those salt-laden flavored sunflower seeds when he's around. what an enabler.
Ramen Noodle Chocolate?!
I saw these last year and wanted to try them all, but only ended up buying the ramen noodle one. I had a similar experience -- it was pretty blah, not what I imagined it would be. I'd try the tortilla lime flavor next time.
Food Waste - What have you wasted Today/This week/Last week??
I had a bad week, waste-wise -- I got rid of an almost full quart of skim milk, half a bunch of cilantro (a perennial problem for me), and a chicken carcass from a roasted chicken. I had honorable intentions to make stock with the chicken bones but time just slipped away from me and then I forgot to stick it into the freezer. I also have about a cup of leftover cooked lentils and rice that will need to go within the next several days. I also just noticed a jar of mayo that will reach its expiration date in about a month and it's barely been touched (I won't be replacing that.).
I've been good about using up the buttermilk I've had around for a while, boiling some potatoes that were starting to sprout, then turning them into mashed potatoes, and this morning into mashed potato pancakes... and all the rest of my veggie drawer.
Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?
flaming hot cheetos and hot fries are the best! to avoid the orange stain on my fingers, i eat them straight out of the bag with chopsticks. i saw some friends do this years ago and couldn't believe i hadn't thought about it before. i now do this with all snack foods that have seasonings that might stain my fingers or make them smell -- cheetoes, chex mix, and the like.
What's for Dinner #124 [old]
Dinner tonight was just for me and it was a random assortment of things: a scoop of mujadarrah, a little ramekin of storebought kimchi (I just opened it and it's not very good -- I'll eat the rest, but after that I'm waiting until I can ask my MIL to send me a huge batch of her homemade radish kimchi, my fave), and.... full fat chocolate milk.
I ate around 5, much earlier than my usual, so I got a little hungry a couple hours ago and also popped open a can of sardines -- I sprinkled two sardines with black pepper, lemon juice, plenty of tabasco, and a super duper thin sliver of kerrygold butter, put them on ak-mak crackers, and chomped down for a filling snack. The rest of the sardines went into the fridge and they will probably be a snack for tomorrow night.
I've been working my way through that pot of mujadarrah all week, and it's only gotten better. My fridge items have been dwindling and there's been extensive flooding so no chance to make a grocery store run.
What do You Like to Fix When You Get the Munchies?
Lately, for a more filling late night snack, I've been eating sardines -- mashed with lemon, pepper, tabasco, chopped onions -- scooped onto ak-mak crackers. I don't eat fish, except weirdly I like canned tuna and sardines, in moderate amounts.
On occasion, I'll make a late-night batch of quinoa with chicken broth -- scoop out a small portion to drizzle with sesame oil and crumble toasted nori strips on top (or furikake).
Other late-night snacks include: miso soup, dumpling soup, or a few almond-stuffed olives straight from the jar.
The nachos sound delicious though... I might have to keep some of those ingredients on hand for next time, which will probably be tonight.
