Uncle Val's Gin Cocktails

Had this at a bar chilled in a glass. Fantastic stuff I thought. Purchased a bottle. I am now on my second bottle. It's pretty great ice chilled or just out of the fridge, but I'm wondering if anyone has made any cocktails with this.

The flavor profile makes me want to leave it alone, but I imagine someone has cooked up something to make folks drink more. I googled a bit, but did not find anything that got me too excited.

What's up with the price of Plymouth gin?

Locally it's going for $32-$35 in twin cities metro area. Sheesh, criminy! For that much, I'd go Junipero for $33, or up the ante to astounding Uncle Val's or a St. George for around $40.
It's a shame. At the previous price point it was a tasty gin at a fair price. They just priced themselves out of my market.

Beefeater is my go-to house gin for martini's, so not as effected as those who use it regularly. My sympathies for those that do/did.

St. Germain Elderflower Liquer

I just picked up a bottle of Thatcher's Elderflower liqueur. Paid around $20. My bottle of St. Germain had become cloudy and wanted to experiment w/ something less expensive.
1. The packaging is WAY cheaper. Standard bottle w/ metal screw-top. I'm not a packaging snob so no points off there. Especially if more is put toward product. Maybe producer will write his memoir entitled... "It's not about the Bottle".
2. Nose is pretty light w/ floral notes dominating; no surprise there.
3. Color: a little opacity (cloudy). Whitish with just a hint of pale yellow.
3. Taste: Simple, elegant. Much less sweet than St. Germain. I'm tasting them side by side. This is definitely NOT a substitute for St. Germain.
I'm off to make an Apperant Sour: 1.5 oz Aperol, 3/4 oz St. Germain, 3/4 Lime Juice. I'll try a straight up subbing of Thatcher's, then again I'll try it w/ some simple syrup if I find it lacking sweetness.
It might be a nice touch to sparkling wine of some sort a 'la Germain w/out the extra sweetness . Thatcher's had some other intriguing liqueurs (cucumber?).

I do not work for or have any affiliation w/ the Thatcher's folks. Just honest comments from someone who makes cocktails in my home.

Bitter Truth Products

Does anyone know where one might find Bitter Truth bitters in the greater twin cities area? Specifically looking for celery bitters. Just purchased some Fee Brothers, but would like to get my hands on some Bitter Truth.
TIA.

Salt Alternatives...Salternatives?

Karl,
Agreed. I've seen this comment several times. Kind of like the 6-8 glasses of water a day. I do not believe that amount is data driven. I run so I'm probably okay with more than the USDA guideline (saw that referenced somewhere). You're a fountain of information, sir.

Salt Alternatives...Salternatives?

Wow, thanks to all for the great info and comments. I will try all your suggestions, esp. just weaning myself from amount used and adjusting my palate. I love and always have garlic, parsely, cilantro, lemons, limes, and balsalmic on hand. I will experiment. I'm weaning myself off processed foods. I will scrutinize product labels.

Val, don't know if I can give up lunch meat. I'll focus on low sodium options w/ less than 10% USDA Rec/serving

Karl S,
Not sure if I am sodium sensitive, but would prefer to have my sodium consumption w/in USDA guidelines or there about. It was after reading some recent articles (media food concern of the week), that I started examining my salt intake and did not like what I saw. One out of 18 U.S. citizens consume the recommended amount or below. Thank you for you comment.

Just doing my patriotic duty to be healthy, fit, and lower medical costs.

Salt Alternatives...Salternatives?

Hello fellow chowsters,

I searched the forums for salt alternatives and sodium and did not see a thread on salt alternatives. With recent news/health trends focusing on salt/sodium consumption I'm looking for something to season my foods that has less sodium. I know most of people's sodium consumption comes from processed foods and restaurant dishes, but I want to find something to season my home meals with that might be healthier for me.

I love radishes or celery dashed with salt. Perfect snack for me, not for my blood pressure.
Tried Mrs. Dash and promptly plunked it into the trash.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions, I'm all ears.

BTW: I went to Boar's Head web site. Their "low sodium" products are a lot higher in sodium than most of their beef products. Granted the beef has more calories and sat. fat, but it is interesting they don't market their beef products as low sodium.

What's up with the price of Plymouth gin?

Are there any less expensive alternatives to Plymouth Gin? Something as smooth and with some complexity?
I've about had it with the $30 . No matter where I check here in the Twin Cities area, I can't find a deal. Campari has gone through the roof at many places too.
