Restaurants Everyone Loves Except You

Amen to this, I thought I was the only one. I almost feel like there might be something wrong with me because EVERYONE else couldn't stop talking about how much they loved it. But Cakeloves cakes are dry, bland and their frosting would best be served as a mortar for tile bricking.

If I want decent cupcakes I would go to Red Velvet (good) or Georgetown Cupcakes (better)

Need graduation dinner suggestions quick!

I know and I REALLY shouldn't have to do this, considering its MY graduation they're celebrating, but...there it is. They are driving all the way from WV, so I am going to have to try to be as accomodating as I am. Otherwise, I'd go to Zaytinya's and be done with it.

Waldorf Md. " Here I Come!"

I live in Hughesville, a few miles south of Waldorf, and sad to say the 'dorf sucks for good food. I actually the town the Food Morgue. The only place that is worthy of a visit is Silver Skewers. Persian food, very nice, and the owner is very personable. Brasas is okay, but not that great. I know you said crabs, but...everywhere I've been the crabs have been over priced and forgettable. If you are going outside of Waldorf Dale's Smokehouse is good. or the Royal Tea Room in LaPlata is fun, and their crabcake sandwhich is really good.

Need graduation dinner suggestions quick!

I have about 6 people coming into celebrate my recent graduation. We need a restaurant in either DC or Alexandria that is:

1) low to Moderately priced, meaning $15-20 pp not including alcohol

2) has a variety of foods (so not just one type of food like just italian)

3) has a fair amount of vegetarian offerings

4) is close to a metro station (not mandatory for Alexandria)

5) Is open late for drinks and such and needs to have a pretty good drink menu at that.

6) has a nice vibe so we'll want to stay for the drinks and not bar surf.

This is for this weekend. I was going to choose Ping Pong Dim sum but everyone had a problems with it, for various reasons.

Cakelove

I work right by Red Velvet in the Penn Quarter, and they are pretty good, though I think slighty (only just) overpriced. I love the Morning Call cupcake, which is chocolate with a espresso buttercream frosting...that frosting is like crack, I'm totally hooked.

Overnight in Penn Quarter

Okay I have a few recommendations:

Zaytinya is a must. Its my favorite restaurant in the city. Its Mediterranian/Middle Eastern that serves small plates (mezzes) mostly. Food and service is both very good.

My recommendations for Zaytinya:

Hünkãr Begendi -Lamb shank with eggplant puree

Chicken Za’atar with preserved lemon

Patates Tiganites Me Yaourti- crispy potatoes with yogurt and caper salt. I could eat my weight in those things.

For something quick yet not fast food you might try Teaism. It's an Asian tea house and they have really good Bento Boxes which are the Asian equivilent to a lunch box meal. I love the Tea-smoked salmo bento comes with sweet potato salad and other sides, for less than $9. Teaism is itself two places: The Teaism cafe and the tea shop next door, both are worth the visit. The cafe is very nice, but extremely crowded by the government workers during lunch hours (myself included). The downstairs eating area has a koi pond and is very peaceful. Somethings I recommend at Teaism:

Tea-Smoked bento box

Ginger Scones (I don't even really like ginger and I'm recommending them)

Salty Oat Cookie (trust me, don't leave without getting one)

Any of their daily teas. my favorite is the Moroccan-Mint iced tea. Fresh mint leaves in the cup. Very refreshing, especially in the summer.

You can look up both places online and check out their menus.

Any Indian/International markets in the Penn Quarter?

I'm looking for a Food market that carries Red Tandoori paste, and I figure I'd start with Indian and International markets first, since grocery stores don't seem to carry it.

I work in the Penn Quarter, so any place near there, or near the Chinatown/Gallery Place metro stop would be great.

Thanks!

A Restaurant similar to Chino Latino in DC/MD/VA Metro Area

I am looking for a restaurant like the Chino Latino restuarant in Mineapolis, MN. Its not really fusion cuisine, just that it has a mixture of dishes from what they call the 'hot zone': South America, the Carribean, India, South Asia, Africa and Polynesia. Here's the website to give you a better idea:

Thanks!

Looking for Farmer Brown-esque restaurant in DC Area

Thank you to the both of you, this restaurant sounds exactly what I'm looking for. I think I might take my mom here for her birthday, she would love the Smoked Salmon flatbread! :)

Looking for Farmer Brown-esque restaurant in DC Area

Okay so I went to San Fran. A couple of weeks ago, and went to a restaurant called "Farmer Brown" and it is described as Farm Fresh Soul Food.

It is not like the Soul Food people think of that is drowned in fats and sugars and zero nutrients. It runs off of African American local farmers' produce and meats. It was absolutely delicious, and I didn't gain 5 pounds in one sitting. Check out the website:

www.farmerbrownsf.com

Well, I'm back home and I would love to find a restaurant in the MD/DC/VA area that is like Farmer Brown. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for casual cooking classes in Alexandria

TO ALL:

Thanks for all your suggestions, these all look good and I will definitely do some research!

Looking for casual cooking classes in Alexandria

My friend and I want to take a couple of informal cooking classes, and she lives in Alexandria, but we could go anywhere in DC, or Fairfax, or truthfully, anywhere the metro is nearby. We could like something like french cooking classes, or maybe how to make sushi, but really we are up for anything. We are not trying to get culinary degrees or anything, its just something fun to do. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

Parents visiting from Jersey..dc help needed

You can try the Austin Grill in the Penn Quarter, its moderately priced. Tex-Mex is what I'd classify it as. Casual, but really good food. Its located near the Gallery Place Metro Stop (Red Line)., or the Navy Mem'l/Archives stop (Blue). That's the one I go to, I've had others in the area which aren't so good. Plus the area is nice, you can walk around see cool shops, maybe get your parents cupcakes from Red Velvet.

In search of Hom Bow (Char Siu)

I am desperately looking for a chinese/Asian restaurant in the greater DC Metro area that serves Hom Bow, also called Char Siu. They are Baked or Steamed Buns stuffed with BBQ Pork.

Let me be specific, the pastry I am talking about is not "Dong Po" which are similar but the sauce that the pork is cooked in is different, not a BBQ flavor. And, its also pork belly not pork shoulder or some other cut of meat. Any help would be great. I have only ever had these in Seattle, and I really hope I don't have to hop on a plane to get one :)

Any Ideas for Fun Restaurant for 27th Birthday Party

I definitely agree with CoCo Sala for dessert...its the closest thing the world has to Chocolate heaven.

Any Ideas for Fun Restaurant for 27th Birthday Party

One more thing. I just realized, that if you like Jaleo, than Zaytinya's might be perfect for you because:

A) Jose Andres helped design the menu, and of course Jaleo is Andres' restaurant.
B) in the same style of Jaleo, Mezze dishes are the middle eastern equivilent to tapas dishes, only a little more complex.

Any Ideas for Fun Restaurant for 27th Birthday Party

Well, it depends on your idea of what fun is...I'm guessing you don't mean any place with Skee-ball and arcade machines in the background... I will be turning 27 in Septmeber, and I would like to go to either:

Oya- Asian and French fusion cuisine, great sushi and the restaurant is very interesting looking, go to the website, and you'll see that the restaurant is not afraid of contrasting colors or textures. It is a little on the pricey side, and more "chic' than 'fun' but I always have a good time going with my girlfriends. If you like to eat late and stay and chill, they do offer a late night menu with sushi, and pretty decent house drinks.

Zaytinya- I love this restaurant, it is Mediterranian, Middle Eastern and Lebanese cuisine all in one. Again very cool restaurant, nice little spots for groups of your size. Again, more chic than fun, but I always have a great time. Same price range. They have a large selection of what I call mezze-sized dishes. I usually order 4 or 5 and split with a couple of people, but I believe they have regular-size entrees as well. Zaytinya's does have a good number of non-meat dishes if anyone in your group is a vegetarian. They are wonderful even if you are a meat eater. :)

Both of these restaurants are in DC, in fairly close proximity to each other. I suggest going on their websites, and checking out menus and venue pictures. Hope this helps.

Looking for Fresh Prickly Pears

I am from Southern Maryland and I wanted fresh prickly pears (fruit that grows on cactus) to make sorbet and jam out of.I travel to DC often so I was wondering if any of the farmer's markets, or specialty food stores in the area carry them? I know they are not native to this climate, so any info would be helpful, thanks!
