Top Five L.A. Sandwiches?

No one mentioned Fiore Market Cafe in So. Pasadena by the post office. Their cold rare roast beef sandwich and roast chicken sandwich is the best esp with their home made bread.

cooking live spot prawns

if you are steaming live shrimps, i don't think you cut off the head or remove the vain.
you will over cook it if u steam and then stir fry. you should pick one or the other.

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

nope they have split up. i tried to get my friend to make me some of the dishes but was told the bamboo made noodles and their aged sauce could not be mimic in a home kitchen. i was ready to buy a bamboo stick if it means i can get some.

Bamboodles Now Yu Pin --"Use Old Menu"

I know the people that run/owned the old Bamboodles and Yu Pin is not affiliated with them other than stealing their ideas/dishes.

Chinese hot pot w/ make your own sauce - where?

this is exactly what I am looking for. does anyone else know of other places with a larger assortment of sauces in the SG area? Thanks!

Chinese hot pot w/ make your own sauce - where?

I am looking for a Chinese hot pot place in the San Gabriel/Alhambra/MP area where they have a good selection of make your own sauce with all the fixin' and what not. Most of the ones I have been to don't have much choice in the sauce.

Chinese wife cake 老婆饼

I've tried both Kee Wah and I fu Tang and also Diamond bakery and a bunch of others. I know there is one place around here that has the chewy ones but just don't remember. When I say chewy it is like mochi chewy and not as sweet as the normal paste. So kind of like a mochi wrapped with a flaky crust and pretty flat, not the puffy ones.

Who here can actually cook excellent authentic or close to it Chinese food?

Real Chinese cooking depends on "wok hey". Most normal home stove can't do that. We always have a stand alone stove outside with a propane tank. In term of steam or boiled items it shouldn't be too hard in a normal kitchen. I would suggest going to a Chinese store to get the typical brands used to get more of the correct flavor. Take soy sauce, most Chinese restaurants don't use Kikkoman, Chinese brands are used cuz it is not as salty and flavor is different. Good luck.

Chinese wife cake 老婆饼

Does anyone know which bakery sells the kind that is chewy on the inside? I only know of one which is across the street from Mt Sac but want to stay in the San Gabriel/Alhambra area.

looking for armenian "hummingbird" layer cake

I've tried it at Art's Bakery in Glendale by the slice. While you are there you should try the nazook, they are very good.

Loose Leaf Teas

Birdpick is run by the same family as WingHopFeng, so you can get the same thing at a lower price

Local, unique food gifts

my parents would bring ginseng. if you buy in bulk it is cheaper. they can package in smaller packages too if you like and cut and slice as you wish. ginseng is suppose to come from wisconson but is a lot cheaper here than in taiwan/china.

Dragon beard candy?

They sell these in 6 pieces packs at the Tak Sheng Heng around Monterey Park. I think there are 3 flavors, sesame, pop and peanuts.

Anyone been to the new Brazilian BBQ at Tahoe Galbi?

Are you saying Tahoe Galbi became a Brazilian BBQ? We just called on Saturday for reservations and no mention of it.

SGV Openings & Closings 2011 - help needed in compiling

Has anyone tried the dumpling place on the 2nd floor of the Focus plaza next to the Korean place? There was a glassed area where the lady makes the xiao long bao. Menu said it is a very old store and has dishes from Wu Xi. Didn't get a chance to try it. Looks like it has potential to compete with Ding Tai Fung. Could not find on yelp and name slips my mind right now.

SGV Openings & Closings 2011 - help needed in compiling

Non-spicy chinese rec in SGV

The last few times I passed by it looked closed, no neon light on. I coulda sworn I saw plywood on the window this pass week but then again this is from the street and driving.

Best Deal on a Whole Roast Pig?

It might be cheaper one block away from Ocean Star, at Yum Cha Cafe.

All the places that have the BBQ section. This weekend I saw signs at U2 Cafe and Capital Seafood. Question is which has the best for the price.

New restaurant at 302 W. Garvey in Monterey Park

Is this the place that used to be called Sweet Blanket. Chao Zhou fish ball place. Fish balls with meat inside. I also tried the savory soup balls too. Small shop. I forgot what I tried at the shop but would go back to get some frozen fish balls.

Awesome Eatery Opens In Monterey Park (And I'm Not Referring to Fortune Dumplings)

I went to this place last week for a late dinner. Place was pretty busy but suspect it is due to the 20% off factor. Food was nothing awesome and more like awful. We had steam dumplings. I watched the lady make it while we were waiting for our food but it just didn't taste fresh. Worse than frozen ones from the store. Dough was mushy rather than chewy. Ordered a sesame sauce noodle dish but they brought out a dan dan noodle instead. we asked why the sesame sauce was black but after confirming that was the sesame dish they said they made a mistake and exchanged it. We had another noodle dish and beef rolls. We were comparing this to 101 Noodle Express and it just cannot compare.

From what I understand Big 3 in Alhambra on Main by Super A is called the New Macau Street in Chinese. I think there might be some connections there.

Chinese rice cakes (aka white sugar cake) in SGV?

I used to get it at Happy Bakery on Valley & 9th before they burnt down. I believe they relocated further down Valley into San Gabriel. Don't know if they changed name. They sell sheets of them along with the yellow sponge cake too.
Yum Cha Cafe sell both the white and brown kind.

Looking for Dragon Beard Candy Chef

I found the box kind from Macau at the Tak Sheng Hang in Monterey Park.

Battle of the Potstickers

I thought Lu Dumpling House and Mama Lu is the same, they have the same Chinese name. Dean Sin World is operated by a few ladies, small little hole in the wall that does their own thing by hand. Are you sure?

Sham Tseng BBQ (old Sam Woo on Garvey in MPK)

Has anyone got a chance to try this new restaurant? I saw grand opening plants and people waiting outside. Looks like prices went up. And it was 30+ and 70+ for a goose? Does anyone know if this is a just a hype or actually the real thing? Looks like people are the same. The lady at the register said everything the same but different owner.
