Bartons Almond Kisses
Just this one stand alone cardboard display tucked into an end aisle. The other stuff may be in the "Seasonal" (read Passover) section.
Tips on tipping - pleeease [moved from Manhattan board}
How does it reduce tip 30%, shouldn't it be 3% credit card charge? Arn't cash tips taxed?
Best St. Joseph's Day pastry (sfingi di San Giuseppe) in NYC?
If you go to Enrico's on Morris Park Ave. in the Bronx, I would be remiss if not letting you know that the lobster tail is unmatched. It is filled with a rum flavored Bavarian cream.

When do ethics come to play in your dining decision?
Look up the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm the deals with the Palestinian Chicken Restaurant.
Bartons Almond Kisses
Found a display today of the original rectangular tin with poodles. At the Waldbaums in North Massapequa Long Island. The display was tucked out of the way by the vinegars, across from the canned pineapple. Kosher for Passover 2012.

I think that you cannot go wrong with Enrico's or Conti's. Maybe try both and report your findings.

Steakhouses - Stop asking me to cut into my steak as soon as it arrives!
At Peter Luger they tell you the trick to let a slice of steak that is somewhat underdone to your liking to place it flat on the hot platter.
As to the Outback steakhouse, I went there because I had a giftcard. The steak was overdone and the waitress when taking it back asked how I would like it. I asked if they could cook it to 123 degrees. She told me that would not be a problem at all. The next steak came out precisely right.
At the Big Texan 72 oz. steak challenge, they ask you to cut into it to see if is to your liking. They do not want to make you eat 72 oz. if not right.
well known brands that just arent as good as in the past
If you have the opportunity to try Trader Joe's mini peanut butter cups you will be pleasantly surprised.
Where to buy uncooked corned beef brisket?
Look in the grocery store where the preserved meats like bacon and hot dogs are.
PrimeBurger in Albertson
Went there yesterday because of a groupon deal. Real tasty juicy burgers. Mrs Doc said best onion rings ever. Sweet potato fries were crispy outside and soft inside. A bit pricey but very good.
Here is the menu.

Keens dilemma - Mutton Chop or Steak?
Mutton is to Lamb as Beef is to Veal Sorry for the SAT type answer.
America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Country
Sorry about late reply, but I agree that wiping down with paper towel is a good idea. Hope it went well. I think I remember browning before brazing the roast, no? If browning you need to dry first to avoid steaming. Never wrong to add garlic to a roast, even if cooking in fruit juice (pineapple, apple, seven up, peaches etc.) If you have 1 TB table salt it is = 2 TB kosher salt. Very significant difference. Let us know the weight of the roast and how it came out.
Keens dilemma - Mutton Chop or Steak?
My first trip to Keens was in November before a Town Hall comedy show. 4 people shared 1 Mutton and a Porterhouse for 2. Perfect amount of protein.
Any chance Peter Luger is not overrated? [moved from Manhattan board]
For ambiance go to PL in Great Neck. When I am done with the bone the dog don't want it. I chomp on the bone in the restaurant, too good to save for home.
America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Country
Roasting very slowly to make roast beef round taste like loin or rib and then cranking the heat at the end is another gem. One recipe from a book cooking broccoli rabe with raisins was terrible.
One likes it well done - Prime Rib Dilemma
Cut a piece off before roasting and cook them all together. When the little one burns the big one is ready to rest.
America's Test Kitchen/Cook's Country
These are basically the only shows I actually cook from. Salting meat a day in advance of roasting or broiling has been the biggest improvement to my food.
Standing Rib Roast ; Another Vote For "low and slow"
I love this thread about low and slow for evenly cooked roast with a crust. I would salt at least 1 day ahead of cooking to flavor and moisturize the meat to the center.
How can I get clear, not cloudy, ice frozen in a mold ?
Boiling removes dissolved gasses. Filter removes dissolved solids.
Levittown Area devoid of any decent dining options.
Villa Carmella is in Levittown. Not a white glove fancy service, but a good down home Italian. Great red sauce, fresh fish, daily specials. Limited $12 wine selection (whole bottle not a glass). It is good food.
Levittown Area devoid of any decent dining options.
You may want to give Elissas a try. North Jerusalem road Just west of Bellmore ROAD (not bellmore Ave. one block west of the Gulf gas station) Technically North Bellmore because it's on the south side of the street.

Father owns Villa Carmella. Regular neighborhood Italian. Son went to C.I.A. and opened less than a mile away. Pretty upscale delicious food.

Peter Luger: Williamsburg vs Long Island
Brooklyn location is much more stark. Hardwood tables and floors. L.I. much more comfortable and has a little decor. Steaks are very good to amazing. You know it will be good. I cannot help with predicting reservation lead time. I am guessing it will be easier on L.I..
PREMIUM SMOKED SABLE PLATE IN NASSAU COUNTY,NY
I was in Bagel Boss (Hicksville) last night. They do awesome smoked fish and they have the Sable. The only rub is that it sells for $40/lb.
Nassau / Paradise Island Fall 2011 - Any new dining spots? Other questions and. . . what about food/wine shopping?
Went to Oh Andres and it was great. An order of fried snapper contained 3 small whole fish that were perfectly seasoned, and a large mound of rice and peas. The grilled grouper came with plantain and coleslaw. Deee licious. With one bottled water and an order of conch fritters cost $28. The food truck on the construction site across from the Sheraton had a nice selection of breakfast orders. A protein on a mound of grits $2. Sardine, mackerel, eggs, or corned beef hash. They had lunches for $5-$7 that we did not get to try. For an elegant dinner we went to The Poop Deck West. Entrees from $25 to $50. A real feast. Pics to follow
Nassau / Paradise Island Fall 2011 - Any new dining spots? Other questions and. . . what about food/wine shopping?
Thanks so much. We are here Tues-Sat.. From what I read Fish Fry is many restaurants together.. Is there a rec among the colledtion?
What I meant by cheap is really local non fancy without the fru fru. Rice and beans, fried fish and conch. Not tourist trap.
Thanks again.
Nassau / Paradise Island Fall 2011 - Any new dining spots? Other questions and. . . what about food/wine shopping?
Dear Food on the brain. Staying at Sheraton Cable beach for 4 days. We would like some good cheap food and some cheap stores for liquor to bring back. On another thread was told of a food truck right across the street from the hotel. Is this still there? I will get to fish fry. Any other spots like this appreciated. Checked with the hotel, meal plan is $131 pp/pd . Currently out of my range. I love rice and beans and local flavor.
