Sweetbreads

I was at Delicias about a month ago- while I didn't have the sweetbreads I was thoroughly unimpressed with the food or the service. Also it was insanely expensive for what it was- and I know it's in the ranch, but for that price I'd rather go to MF.

Sweetbreads

Piatti might be my favorite in San Diego for sweetbreads.

Cedar Planked Salmon

Thanks so much for all the help- glad to know I'm not missing something huge.

I tend to really like putting the herbs between the fish and the plank only because the flavor that comes through is so subtle, but clearly there.

We had to push dinner to tonight, but it's going to be another gorgeous night for grilling in San Diego!

Cedar Planked Salmon

Couple of quick questions- made this before and don't know why I'm suddenly doubting myself.

Getting ready to plan some beautiful king salmon tonight (we try to eat somewhat healthy on sunday nights). When I look back at a bunch of recipes they say to remove the skin- i never have as it just falls away from the fish when its done- am I doing something totally wrong?

Also, I'm just planning to throw a bunch of herbs between the skin and the fish (perhaps even some on the fish) and lay lemon slices beneath and above it- should I really be more aggressive with my treatment of the fish (like a mustard or brown sugar rub?)

WineSeller and Brasserie

It's been about 6 months for me since I've been there- maybe even a bit more. I always enjoy it, though for french focused food there are other places I prefer, especially if I'm not going to have a full bar. Also, and this isn't a complaint, but holy shit this place is hard to find. It's buried deep in office park hell.

Must try restaurants near Carlbad

I'd take a look at Bull Taco- it's totally inauthentic Mexican, but incredible view and you can bring your dog to the outdoor eating area.

Caviar (restaurant and retail)

All- I know Bevmo has some caviar for retail sale, but I'm always worried about them not turning stock enough- can you suggest someplace to buy decent caviar?

Also- what restaurants do caviar service in San Diego? I know Oceanaire does (I think there's one in San Diego?) , but any place that's not a chain?

Flavor Del Mar

We were there just a few months ago- so not sure how recent this was- but the appetizers and soups were solid, the mains not so much. The service is pretty mediocre.

Their sister wine bar- sip is way way way overpriced (even for the location) and the food leaves a lot to be desired. Also someone should be shot for putting the wines we saw on a wine bar's list. Nothing against costco wines (they have plenty of solid wines), but I expect quite a bit more from a wine bar.

Poutine in San Diego

OK folks- had Poutine at Haven in Orange County last night and it was a-mazing. (Have had it plenty of times before, but beef cheek + fries + port salut = stellar). Who's got great poutine on their menu in San Diego?

Pacific Beach and Carlsbad

One of my favorite, and totally overlooked places at times is the Lodge at Torrey pines- it's actually the restaurant/bar off the golf course- kind of half way between your two locations. Food is kid friendly (killer burger, sloppy joe is often on the menu, plus all sorts of good locally inspired stuff).

It's not drop dead good- but it's really, really solid and a place I'd have no problems taking a toddler.

dinner near La Jolla Mariott

Japengo is kind of an earlier version of Burlap to me- very sceney, mediocre food, not bad for a drink or a very small bite for happy hour, but not worth seeking out.

Best veal chop in San Diego?

The service has always been decent, not great, but decent. The food is always ok, but honestly better executed at the upper priced chain steakhouses. It's not bad, just never had anything there I'd consider great.

Best veal chop in San Diego?

You know, I've always had decent service, but never a good meal at Donovan's. What am I missing?

Gingham is the Next Malarkey Fabric.

What is it with San Diego taking more and more of the same crap for food and lauding it as excellent?

Honestly, I've got to hand it to him as it was pretty genius to put Burlap next to Sammy's as it's just the next food price up from Sammy's, but against things like George's or even Market it just can't hold its own in that price point as far as food quality goes.

What's the best thai in BLOOMINGTON IN?

There are really only two thai places worth visiting in Bloomington- Esan Thai, which is right off of kirkwood, behind Shanti. The other is My Thai which is hidden back off West 3rd street (past lowes, but tucked back on the right side near the California Burrito or whatever chain place that is)

FYI, Jazz at the station is no longer open.

SD Chefs and Dining in SD

Just as a note, if you're going to do things this way you need to do it in a $/sq ft calculation to put restaurants on par. Gross sales is very different depending on the space utilization.

/geeky finance nerd.

SD Chefs and Dining in SD

I'm not- look at the square footage that George's operates in compared to a cheesecake factory

SD Chefs and Dining in SD

Honestly, the food scene in San Diego is abysmal short of a couple of bright spots. It's the main thing that keeps us from moving back to San Diego. You don't have to be New York to have a really quality food scene at all price points with consistency and quality service. And you don't have to be all chains- To name a few cities that do it right: New Orleans, Louisville has a nice up and coming scene, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia (I can keep going)

Must eat places downtown San Diego?

I'm not sure it's fair to judge any restaurant on a special service like NYE/Mother's Day/Valentine's day.

Late Night Downtown San Diego Eats?

We ended up at Nobu, and I should have known better. Spotty service, terrible crowd (seriously, who brings someone to Nobu to break up), ok food.

Late Night Downtown San Diego Eats?

I'm looking for a restaurant for after Lewis Black tonight in downtown San Diego- ideally finer dining that's willing to seat/serve at 10 or so. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

SD:Restaurants that are on my list to try in 2010..what's yours?

This year is the year I find a passable high end restaurant in San Diego that's not a chain with decent service, a quality wine list, a full bar and excellent food. I love the mid/low price point food coming out of San Diego, but I really want something to shine at the top.

RESTAURANT FOR T-DAY DINNER IN INDIANAPOLIS

I doubt Farm will be open for Thanksgiving, but it's worth avoiding their service anyways. I can't imagine how bad it would be on a holiday.

Bloomington IN questions, incl Tallent

Better than anywhere else in Bloomington? Actually the best Italian food in Bloomington is probably at Olive Garden based on the quality of Italian food here.

Good Eats in Bloomington and Indianapolis, IN

I know you're a Daniel Orr fan, but frankly the food and service isn't good- been there a number of times in the last year, not worth the money or the time. I'm not sure why you like his place so much- either you're getting service that myself and those I know aren't getting, or the yelp reviews and my experiences are all completely off.

Uptown's food is basic, it's not bad, it's just very basic. They do what they do well and they never change the menu, which is totally fine.

Good Eats in Bloomington and Indianapolis, IN

Farm is worth ignoring- really awful service and mediocre food.
Tallent is awesome as is Finch's.

Unfortunately, other than Finch's and Tallent there's no seafood worth eating in Bloomington.

Uptown is basic, but solid.

Note:These are all Bloomington places.

For Indy I really dig Ocenaire for seafood- yah I know it's a chain, but they are a very small chain and the execute extremely well. Goose and R Bistro are both solid recs below as well.

BLOOMINGTON INDIANA EATS

Unfortunately, in the restaurant world it's not a terribly uncommon thing. Chefs, and restaurants in general, have one of the highest personnel turnover rates of the service industry. I have a lot of respect for any chef who's willing to be in the kitchen, cook food, and tough things out through these hard economic times, knowing that there's investor money behind them and serving that responsibility daily.

BLOOMINGTON INDIANA EATS

Oh well, how very chef-like. Bloomington's fortunate enough to have a few chefs who love to be in their kitchens and who are super dedicated to their restaurants.

TN: 2006 AMON-Ra Shiraz

have this, it's stellar. in terms of its size, if you haven't had the montes purple angel you should look for that too.
