Hong Kong: Best "Beef brisket tendon hor fun"

Thanks FourSeasons and Charles for confirming. Previously I thought they were both located at Tai Po as I had never been there on previous visits to HK!

Hong Kong: Best "Beef brisket tendon hor fun"

Hi FourSeasons,
So is 楓林 in Tai Wai MTR and 群記 and the sweet tofu dessert at Tai Po Market MTR? I was just searching for the addresses and maps and noticed that 楓林 is not that close to 群記.

Hong Kong and Macau: favorite dishes

Hi FourSeasons, for these two dises on your top 10:

3. Yung Kee 4th floor : 椒鹽海參扣 (salt peppered sea cucumber),
4. Yung Kee 4th floor : 清湯牛爽腩 (soong lam, a part of beef, in broth),

Do they both need to be ordered on the 4th floor of Yung Kee? Can anyone eat on level 4? I always get put on the ground floor or one time it was full I got put on the 1st floor. Do you just need to ask to go to level 4 or book in advance? I'm keen on trying the 清湯牛爽腩, is it just 牛爽腩 in soup, without any noodles?

Thanks, Ed

Hi Peech, in relation to 亞婆豆腐花, is there one in Lamma Island? I searched for it to get the address on openrice and I only found one but it is in Tai Po? The other search result was 建興亞婆豆腐花 Kin Hing Tofu Dessert in Lamma Island.

Are there 2 亞婆豆腐花 stores, one in Lamma the other in Tai Po? Are they the same one? I'm a big fan of tofu fa so will make the trip to Lamma for it if its the best! =) Thanks

Best restaurant/s in HK for Peking Duck?

Whilst browsing the restaurants on openrice, I noticed a number of cantonese restaurants also offered Peking duck. Just wondering which ones are the best or better ones?

All the guides point to Spring Deer in TST as the best for Peking duck but I have also found negative comments and that it isn't the best for Peking duck.

Restaurants / Bars with a view of HK Skyline

Was wondering if there were any good dining spots and bars with good views of the HK harbour? It can be overlooking the HK Island harbour (most likely in TST) or vice versa, i.e. restaurant in Central/Wanchai etc overlooking Kowloon.

So far I only know of Felix at the Peninsula and Aqua Spirit. Both are in TST and I have read very mixed reviews on both on openrice, just wondering if there are any other ones that people have been to and would recommend?

I also found R66 (revolving) in Wanchai which is like a lunch/dinner buffet, but apparently the food is not that good. Another one I found was Penthouse Sky Lounge in Wanchai but there doesnt seem to be many reviews.

In search of Hong Kong's 'BEST WON-TON NOODLE'

FourSeasons, thanks for clarifying. I was thinking the same, i.e. that the classic version is wonton noodle in a bowl of broth/soup. However, there are also a lot of people which prefer the dry noodle with the soup separate.

When the soup is included, do the restaurants in HK provide wonton in the bowl of soup or in the dry noodle? Or does it vary between restaurant to restaurant?

I saw a review on openrice for Muk Man Kee where the person ordered the dry noodles with shrimp roe, it came with a wonton soup (but no wontons) so he had to order a 淨雲吞 which is separate.

I think this person ordered 蝦子撈麵. Should he have ordered 雲吞蝦子撈麵 to get the wontons? I just wasn't sure how it works as I would have thought the wonton will be on the plate of dry noodles.

Thanks, if someone has mentioned a really good restaurant but in english and you cannot find it when searching on openrice, is there any other way of finding the chinese name for it? I usually try searching in google, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. It doesn't help that I can't type chinese.

Hong Kong: Best "Beef brisket tendon hor fun"

Thanks skylineR33. I know what it is now, I have not had that since I was a little kid back in HK, will definitely try it this time round to bring back good memories. Ed

Hong Kong: Best "Beef brisket tendon hor fun"

Thanks Charles.

Does shrimp roe on top of lo mein mix with beef brisket since beef brisket has its own sauce?

I keep getting confused with the different beef brisket/tendon as I know what they are in chinese when I order but not the english translation.

Please correct me here as I think I'm wrong but want to get it right if I am to order the right food and not have people give me funny looks when I get it wrong!

So does that mean:
牛腩 = beef brisket
爽腩 = beef ?
牛雜 = beef intestine (combination)
Are there any other 牛 stuff that I'm missing that should be worth trying out at the top beef brisket restaurants in HK?

Also, from the link below, if you look at the 3rd post from the bottom, how come there is also 牛 'gun' in the 牛腩 noodles? Is the 牛'gun' the same thing as the 爽腩?

In search of Hong Kong's 'BEST WON-TON NOODLE'

I noticed in a lot of the photos on openrice from the restaurants featured in this post, a lot of people prefer to have the won-ton noodles as dry 蝦子撈麵 with the wonton & soup in a separate bowl. Is this the preferred way of having wonton noodles in HK?

Also, may be a silly question but what is the sprinkled stuff on top of the mien of the 蝦子撈麵? Is this the prawn flavouring? Not seen this before in chinese restaurants in Sydney

Good Shanghainese restaurants in HK?

Thanks Peech and Fourseasons for the restaurants, I will definitely add them to my list.

FourSeasons, do you know the chinese name for Fung Lam? Tried searching for Fung Lam on openrice but couldn't come up with anything. Would like to try it if I go to Tai Po for 群記 as I'm a big fan of pigeon. Thanks

Ofcourse! Thanks FourSeasons.

Hi Charles / skylineR33, how do you order the Chu Hau Beef Brisket and tendons in cantonese? I know the Chu Hau bit but wasnt sure how to say the ret in canto, as I want to try this in MMK too.

Also, would you know what the steamed milk pudding is in cantonese that sher.eats refers to at the Australian Milk restaurant in the post below?

Thanks

Recommended HK Desserts?

Thanks skylineR33.

I've walked past 發記 many times on Soy Street but never been in, I will go there for the Manga sago dessert for sure this time!

Didn't know Lei Garden's chef invented yeung chi gum lo. Are any Lei Garden better than others or are they all just as good? I'll be staying in Mongkok and I think there is a branch there.

Hi Sher.eats, if I was to order the song lam beef at this restaurant, what would be song lam in chinese, or how would I order the song lam beef brisket noodle in chinese? Thanks

Good Shanghainese restaurants in HK?

Thanks for the reply. I will check out the Old restaurant in TST. Are there other ones?

Recommended HK Desserts?

I was wondering what are some recommended "must-try" desserts in HK?

Last time I went back, I always got the same 3 desserts - tofu fa, red bean sa and my favourite yeung chi gum lo. Are there other types that I should try? I read that Dan dang (egg) and Almond soup are one of the best.

Also, which are the better dessert places in HK? I would like to try and find a store that does good yeung chi gum lo as I find different stores do it differently!

I read that Sweet Dynasty Restaurant on 100 Canton Road, Tsimshatsui is very popular.

Thanks!

6 Days in Hong Kong

Hi Sher.eats,

Thanks for sharing all the info on the restaurants!! Its really helpful for someone that is not familiar with the area.

In regards to the seafood restaurant, Ming Kee in Po Toi Island, is it hard to get to Po Toi Island? I searched on google and it seems there are infrequent ferry services from Aberdeen and Stanley on certain days of the week. Are Ming Kee open 7 days?

Thanks

Good Shanghainese restaurants in HK?

Hello, I'm new here and have found it very useful with so many people sharing their experiences about food.

I am going over to HK next month for 2.5 weeks and I was wondering if anyone knows of any top Shanghainese restaurants in HK (including Kowloon and NT)? I don't mind travelling to find a good restaurant.

I have only tried one Shanghainese restaurant in Mongkok (Fa Yeun Street I think) and was wondering if anyone has been to better ones?

Thanks,

Ed
